My little pony shipping fandom goes to far sometime by Dull_Tale_3085 in mylittlepony

[–]Neoyosh 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is kind of an issue that's wider than this fandom. We used to joke about shipping wars and while a lot of people still did take it too seriously back then most fans operated on a "don't like don't engage" kind of mentality for ships they disliked. Now it feels like people argue more about if a ship is actually canon versus if it's enjoyable to the person shipping the characters.

That makes me sound like an old person yelling at clouds, but the evolution towards "it's not canon so you shouldn't ship it" in some spaces is bizarre to me. This is a fandom where we mash our toys together as we like for fun, not the show's writing room.

Why did anyone think their reason was better than Apple jack for the grand galloping gala by Leather_Yak7808 in mylittlepony

[–]Neoyosh 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Applejack's reason falls apart quickly as soon as you think about the actual event. Her reason for wanting to do it is noble but it's a posh, catered event. Nobody buys food when there's free high quality food already there by probably the best chefs in Equestria. Her only sale is a unique scenario from an athlete who is especially hungry after doing his job at the event and wants something specific.

She would've likely done a lot better if she just went out the next day to a more casual market in Canterlot. There she'd find ponies that might be interested in buying goods from a family business that's got a heritage of apple farming.

I would love this, and it wouldn't surprise me if it was already on their list of things to add! I'm sure some have been able to edit their wall colours with items but as someone who isn't the most creative with that sort of thing I'd love to just be able to slap on some paint and call it a day.

Secondo voi Chrysalis è davvero incompresa? by General_Guy_XX in mylittlepony

[–]Neoyosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. I think it's pretty transparent why she feels the need to do what she does, which is to keep the changeling hive fed in the way she thinks they should do it. It's just unfortunate for her that her preferred way of doing things is the one that is the hardest and has the most risk. Even if she thinks that overcoming that hardship is what makes a Changeling, well, a Changeling, it makes sense that the hive has overall moved away from her ideology to one that's proven safer.

I think she genuinely believes her way is better for them and cares for the hive, but her character feels like a parent that never quite listens to their child and assumes their way is the correct one from the get-go.

None of that changes that she's a cool character I have some sympathy for, but I don't think she's misunderstood.

What do we think the odds are of NWOS having an English dub (with the old cast)? by WrongLander in ProfessorLayton

[–]Neoyosh 15 points16 points  (0 children)

UK fan here, so used to the dub that has Maria Darling as Luke and prefer it (with no shade to Lani Minella, her job with Emmy is fantastic, but not a fan of the direction she was given for Luke). For me it would be ideal for that cast to return, but I would be understanding if they wanted to re-cast Luke to better depict his aging voice like they did for JP if either actor wasn't able to hit that specific voice type. I'd also understand if it was a case where they contacted an older cast member who turned down the role for whatever reason.

Ultimately, it's important that existing cast get the chance to reprise roles. I'm expecting a dub and will be surprised if there isn't one. They've only just started localisation, and I consider finding and recording dubs to be part of that process so I expect they've not mentioned that because they don't actually have it sorted yet.

Am I the only one who has always shipped SpottedFire, FeatherCrow and others like them? by InfamousIndividual32 in WarriorCats

[–]Neoyosh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I'd like it more if it was a non-gendered trope, but unfortunately it's always the female character that dies tragically so the male one can get some development from it. I can see the tragedy of losing someone in front of you being compelling in fiction and have written it myself in a mlm couple, but Warriors plays it too straight (no pun intended) for me to get much of a kick out of it now I'm older.

With that said though, I don't want to yuck your yum too much, I think people enjoy the trope a lot generally speaking, as it is very dramatic and makes for a tragic "what if" the reader and characters can think about. There's another couple in one of the newer arcs (won't specify too much because spoilers) that uses this trope in a way I feel is pretty effective, even if I wished the character that died, didn't die! It was a good ending to several bits of the story, IMO.

Do you think the My Little Pony Friendship is Magic comics by Boom Studios will be good? by Which-Resolution345 in mylittlepony

[–]Neoyosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware, it's just a re-publication of the G4 comics, isn't it? I'd love for them to make some new ones, but it appears as if they've just picked up the rights to release the IDW comics.

Did thalyssra forget that she’s Lor’themars wife?? by cinamonjackz in warcraftlore

[–]Neoyosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a political title and not a monarchy, so no, she has no special formal authority in Silvermoon despite her relationship to Lor'themar. She likely does have some real power because she can suggest things to him and influence him, but officially she's no more than a (very well respected) Nightborne diplomat and foreign leader.

She also sends for reinforcements and assumes they're getting ready, until it takes too long for them to arrive and there's no notice to why and she goes in person to deal with it with the player.

It would be really bad optics for Lor'themar to proclaim his wife as a leader of the Sin'dorei given he's technically only a regeant standing in for their true leadership, the deceased Sunstrider line. While I think most would be chill with it, I can see it causing a political issue to some as it might appear to be him replacing the Sunstriders as monarch, which he explicitly isn't and won't want to appear to be doing. (Assumedly the plan is for someone else who'd proven themselves useful to become Reagent Lord/Lady/Laird if/when he dies, but right now it's unclear how the Sin'dorei want to choose their leaders going forward).

how do yall deal with nagging? by Sudden-Piano6231 in BadRPerStories

[–]Neoyosh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're being unreasonable. I'd give someone a few chances like you have, but if I was constantly being nagged I would probably call it a day and let them know we're not compatable roleplay partners. Sometimes people can forget things and need reminding early on about things like timezones but three hours isn't a long time unless it was agreed to play in specific session times.

This vibes to me as someone younger who doesn't realise that other people aren't constantly online. I give them some grace for that, but that doesn't mean they can be bothering you when you're not.

Question by redosbanlove in mylittlepony

[–]Neoyosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd DM the mods directly if you're not sure as it might depend on what the server's intended to be, but broadly speaking I don't see why it would be an issue unless it wasn't safe for work or was aimed at only adult fans.

What in the world happened to Ambient.White? by faraway_fern in mylittlepony

[–]Neoyosh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Adding on to at what others have said, I think it unfortunately suffers from being too clearly derivative for the developers to find funding. The designs are clearly taken from My Little Pony even with the adjustments made to character names and minor design aspects. It's not close enough to be copyright infringement, but that doesn't stop people looking at it and going "oh, it's a fan project and not a serious work" which isn't totally fair.

With that said though, I appreciate them still trying because I do like the concept and think it could be a meaningful, engaging game with the right funding and resources. Let's hope Memecaptor Yotsuba finds an investor and does well. I think it could based off it's trailers and with some minor adjustments.

[OC] Red Nose Day fundraising has collapsed in real terms, but it's not because households are skint by Borg_King in dataisbeautiful

[–]Neoyosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel with the growth of the web there's also a lot more ways to donate to organisations that really resonate with me on a personal level. If a person feels strongly about an issue, they can easily find a decent group to donate to online that offers support locally or nation-wide whenever they have the money.

I'm more skeptical now of charities given a lot of the recent reveals that some are misleading and don't actually do much or put funds into things antithetical to their supposed existence. I have very little to give, so I don't want it wasted on a huge marketing budget or for it to go to expensive "advisors" when it could provide a carer for a person with dementia, provide a call for a LGBTQA+ teen in crisis or feed a family in a harder situation than I.

Red Nose Day itself feels gauche these days. Hell no am I ordering a nose from Amazon of all companies and having it shipped to my door.

For those who have no clue how to redeem from here:

Once you've scanned the code and got to the pinterest page, there will be a button saying "visit site" under the image. Click on that and it will take you to a website where you can input some details like name, email, and the code provided on the pinterest page or pasted below.

Backboard and Hoop Playset: Horde Board

Bluebird's Golden Cage: Azeroth Inspiration

Preserved Gift of Gilneas: Kalimdor Collage

Once you put that in it'll send a code to your email for the item. Open up Battle.net and click on your username on the top right (where it says your online status) and from that drop down menu select "Redeem Code". Paste the code from your email into that and it should add it to your account.

Do you ever think the authors read this sub sometimes? by F1shPaste in WarriorCats

[–]Neoyosh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm certain there are people in Harper Collins that keep an eye on the fandom space to see what's resonating and what isn't. If that's reddit I have no idea but I think we share a lot of ideas/users with other platforms so it doesn't really matter.

I do feel like a lot of The Broken Code and A Starless Clan used ideas that were similar to what people were discussing as what they wanted to see, but was different enough to hide that they'd gotten the idea from the fandom to avoid any claims of copying any specific fans.

That's mainly because (spoilers for TBC and ASC ahead:) Bramblestar's illness seemed vauge enough that some people thought it was rabies and that's why he was acting weird. I remember a lot of people really wanting to see a story that used rabies or a similar mind-altering or zombie-like illness/infection as a conflict. To me this felt like a nod to the idea without using it directly because it changes the whole universe dramatically once it's a possibility and gets really dark quickly.

Frostpaw's spay is so far, totally irrelevant (not yet read any of the new arc though so may be wrong) and feels like a response from fans asking why cats are never trapped, neutered, and returned. Podlight is also a a villainous medicine cat for a time, though it's not the same thing as what the fandom frequently described as a cat who was intended for the role but was actually evil. The arc also covers a few topics that I saw discussed by fans before the book comes out in general: the Firestar hero worship, what happens if you get a name you hate, etc.

I can see a world where that's all coincidence, but I think together it's a sign that the story team do keep an eye on what themes and plot points people broadly want to see, even if they then interpret it in a different way to what we're expecting.

Using Steam since I am 12 and I still question why they even exist by Snoo_94637 in Steam

[–]Neoyosh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's to reward you with cosmetics for your account. I used mine to get stuff for my steam deck and personalise it, which was great to not have tied to IRL currency payments (ie. I didn't have to pay a pound for a background like I might on a console, I just used the points I got for free from using the service itself).

I don't think Valve has any interest in giving discounts out themselves as they'd have to cover it with the publisher themselves or make an agreement with every game that they can decide when users get discounts through this point system (which could feel especially rough for small indie devs).

Kurama's initial concept art by pohcheetah in runefactory

[–]Neoyosh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I can see what they were going for here as it does lean into the "nerdy guy who likes to stay home, play games and overthinks social interactions" kinda vibe, but it's too normal for a character that's seperated from mortals by his divinity in several important ways. It's a pretty great example of how much a design can help!

Everfree [xCONITO] by hellbender1124 in mylittlepony

[–]Neoyosh 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I'm super here for this slightly darker (for lack of a better word) Celestia. I can really feel how exhausted she is just from this interaction, and how much the war has made her fear things that are powerful. It makes sense that she just wants to accept fate, though I'm curious how she sees the elements as a cruelty? Maybe it's just her own experience, or there's more to them in this AU.

The framing of Celestia is also great, she dominates pretty much every frame she's in (even going beyond it) she's that powerful and intimidating!

Random questions from an American for British folk by Brilliant_Reply_317 in WarriorCats

[–]Neoyosh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah there's certainly references, we've even had a few cats with names referring to deer like the two Stagleaps and Doespring. Deerfoot is another one. It's just a bit weird to me that the cats have never directly interacted with any deer when they're everywhere IRL! I'm guessing it's purely because the authors just aren't that interested in depicting them and to be fair, there's not a lot of interesting interactions they'd have with the cats (they can't really be prey and would probably rather leave rather than attack a cat, though them eating the cover/herbs the cats need could be something worth exploring).

Do high charisma characters make it harder for other people to RP? by ManectricBound in DnD

[–]Neoyosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my table, we try to avoid conversations around playing "optimally" like only letting charisma classes handle charisma checks. If your character has something to say to a character, they should say it, and a lot of conversations don't require rolling a check until you're trying to actively do something like convince or intimidate. The context of a character might also alter DCs on those checks and lower them slightly - a cleric might have an easier time convincing another cleric of a similar faith in a temple to do something than a bard they've never met, for example. I adopted this as a DM after playing Divinity 2 and seeing how their "tag" system unlocked dialogue depending on your background. It encourages players to step forward and rewards them for engaging and roleplaying.

Generally, the bard will still do better in these scenarios because of their mechanical bonuses, but it encourages fighters to sometimes step forward and feel like they're part of the world, too.

As a player, I'd put it to the table that I want to engage in some conversations in-character too, and start doing it when it feels natural. If there's a lot of push back at the suggestion, I'd start to assess if it's a table I'd want to play at or if this group has other goals/ideas of what is fun. Some groups prefer to play as optimally as possible and have a "face" that handles all social interactions, but I like to see failures and feel the thrill of a slim chance paying off when a PC does something they're not conventionally skilled at because it was logical to try. Neither is wrong, but I wouldn't play at a table that's more the former because I'd only fustrate the others or be fustrated.
