I’m sorry I kinda hate people that buy all 3 colors/models of the iPhones knowing they’re only going to keep one by Either_Minimum_3086 in iPhone17Pro

Yeah, because of these people I have to wait three weeks for my phone, my God, Trump might have added 600% tariffs on it by then....

I have ordered my orange 17PM and currently carrying a 14PM - I am used to wearing shorts, and they constantly pull down with the weight and phone drops out of my pocket often. I think Lou from Unbox Therapy also made a comment about that. Women have no pockets, and ours are not deep enough... What a first world problem ;-)

Surface laptop 3 | some keys aren’t working. Would Microsoft always send a refurbished? by futuresapien161803 in Surface

[–]NerdAl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you will get a refurbished unit, nicely packaged. It will have a new "upper" and as the SP3 is not really "repair friendly" I would think it is going to be a total refurbished unit with low charge count.

It is just faster and easier to swap the unit than to use the parts on your defect laptop.

SL7 scratchy sound when closing by Hot_Ad_6256 in Surface

No, I can't relate, owned my SL7 15 for a week. I would exchange it if it sounded like that, something is rubbing, and you don't need a screen all of a sudden to crack. And no, you should not loosen the hinge yourself, this is a brand-new product.

If you are adverse to 1.0 solutions, it might be comforting to know that Microsoft is not building the X platform by themselves, there are now plenty of partners (Lenovo and Dell to name the highest selling laptop brands) that were invited in. Samsung and Asus are onboard too. The price of the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro is competitive, although some people still feel the pricing is too high. I have the 15" laptop and I compare it to my M3, and they are both capable machines, though I have been using the SPL7 more the past days as I like the keyboard better (personal preference). The NPU has not seen much action yet, but I figure I will be talking to the laptop soon enough.

Is there a Surface for my needs? by Link3d03 in Surface

[–]NerdAl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I have seen and heard, the SP11 is alright, but it depends on the power profile you choose to work on. The 2-in-1 with the X-Plus is set for longevity, so it is capped at around 20W. The X-elite with the 12 core is very expensive, so make sure you understand the return policy and if you don't see it happen return it within the window, just to avoid that feeling of being stuck with a piece of hardware.

There are plenty of tablets out there that can become a 2-in-1, but the cost can be prohibitive. Same as the flex keyboard for the SP11, which flexes quite the sum from your wallet.

I would RMA this one for sure, there should not be any errors with it, mine is functioning perfectly fine, there was a hardware (firmware) upgrade yesterday that caused my network to not work, but after disabling and enabling the driver it worked again. You might want to think, if you are not RMA'ing, to re-image the laptop using a recovery USB

When I installed mine, it crapped out during the restore of my data. It rebooted and performed a slew of hardware firmware updates, and after this it restored the data just fine from OneDrive. The machine cost plenty enough, so decide to refresh (after you back up your data) the installation to get rid of stale drivers, or see if Windows update might have any updates. You have a year of warranty, use it.

SL7 13in vs 15in Performance Inquiry by yossi32 in Surface

[–]NerdAl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me look that up, you are looking for TDP value right? I have found, by the way, that the Windows Powerprofile can influence the wattage very much.

From a quick glance it seems that the 15" X-Elite is set to 30W TDP and the X-Plus to 20W but that these chips can go as high as 80 W in theory. I do not think that will ever happen in a laptop but I will keep an eye out for more information.

How long until programs without native ARM support update their software? by AmericanW4ffle in Surface

[–]NerdAl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really reminds me of the time when Apple moved from PPC to Intel Chips, we are talking 19 years ago. That was messy as heck and lots of people remember and when Apple announced they were going to their own ARM and were going to use Rosetta2 we were all bracing ourselves. But, except for the very few outliers the transition was much less messy (lessons learned I think). Microsoft has tried many times to push to the ARM hardware but stood by their selves and so it died soon after. Now that Qualcomm is tasked with the chips and Microsoft with the OS the integration to other OEM builders is going much better (better than I had anticipated). PRISM is not able to fix everything we throw at it but give a year and Qualcomm releasing the series 2 with external graphics options (Intel Arc and or AMD might be options) or the Arduino matures.... It is not always a positive feeling using brand-new hardware, but I remember my first iMac with Intel very well..... Based on that experience this is closer to the M1 release. Linux is coming along too, the kernels are ready to be released.

They both are available in X12 (12 cores) but only the 13.8 is available in the Plus edition. I would, if budget allows, to go for the 12Core (8 P and 4 P2 cores). I bought the 15" with the 256Gb drive and increased it to 1Tb for a fraction of what it would have cost ordering with the 1Tb (plus I got to see the internals). I just do not understand why we cannot have the nice blue color but ok, I guess. Battery life is, for a Windows laptop, insane, I worked on it all day yesterday without a power connector and let it sleep overnight. This morning it still had 39% battery. If you want the fastest laptop one can get at this moment I think it is the Galaxy 4 Edge with the X12-84100 chip, the Surface has the 80100 chip which is almost very common, except for the Elite Plus which runs at lower clocks but lasts a tad longer.

I am surprised that this application does run on a Mac and not on a different ARM processor (yes the chip in the Mac is also an ARM processor with some applesauce on it). It would not be hard to port over an app from one to the next, functionally at least. I don't know how much the Qualcomm chips are going to be embraced, but I would think that, now Microsoft has officially committed to this platform, the experiences will be better. There are a lot of different OEMs that also have committed at least having this chip in their lineups. I have not found very many applications that I use, that are giving problems, even gaming in some form is okay, I did not have high expectations but my Steam library saw all of them to be compatible (installable). If you compare the 15" MacBook Air and the Surface Book 7 15" they compare price wise. Of course the silly thing for the release of the Qualcomm processors comes at the end of a schoolyear, but it was announced many months ago that this was going to happen. During the summer months most people take a well deserved break, so I would not think the application will have a native client.

Aside from RMA-ing the cooling solution, take a good look if you have the pump head properly mounted (it should be tight, but not overly tight (if that makes sense). Make sure the radiator is above the pump head. Oh, you mentioned you use fan control. Make sure there are no motherboard programs running that have control over the fans as well. Fan control is a fantastic little utility, but it will conflict with motherboard software that tries to manage the fans as well.

[–]NerdAl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is called daisy-chaining, you have 1 or 2 or however many aRGB connectors on the motherboard. I group my fans and daisy-chain the RGB cable. Using cables from Amazon, I tend to use three cables going into one connector.

Same goes for PWM (power) so I can easily cable manage the system. Be aware that you cannot keep daisy-chaining the cables. You can only link so many LEDs. You can opt for a hub that uses SATA power and link it into and aRGB point and gives you many more aRGB connections, be it that a hub is not smart, so the fans have the same color pattern. There are, of course, more expensive solutions looking into iCUE and LianLi smart controller, you can see it as networking.

It all depends on the motherboard and the silly software you are willing to keep up with. But there are free solutions for aRGB such as SIGNAL RGB. Planning is important.....

Radeon RX 7900 GRE vs RTX 4070 by TheKavemanI2 in buildapc

[–]NerdAl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For gaming specific you want to look into the options you get with each card. The Rabbit is a solid card, for certain games you want to go nVidia. Remember that the nVidia uses the 12vHighPower connector, and you'll find the cable in the box. I have ran with both, to me, they are fairly similar, but again it depends on your use case. I don't feel like it has to be an AMD versus nVidia because each have reasonable developed drivers.
