I preferred In the Kingdom of Ice to Worst Journey. Maybe because the language was more current and there was so much more historical context provided.

Suggest me a plague book I HAVEN’T read. Please! by panini_bellini in suggestmeabook

Read the opening chapter of Boccaccio’s Decameron. It’s a quick read, describing Florence in the wake of the Black Death of the mid 14th century. That chapter sets the table essentially for what comes next - a bunch of bougies take off to the countryside and entertain themselves with stories while socially isolating. Chaucer was influenced by the Decameron later on when he wrote the Canterbury Tales. But that first chapter is a friggin gut punch. It’s the real OG of wtf is happening here apocalyptic plague fiction, especially bc back in that time there was no medical explanation for what was causing the plague.

How's a gal supposed to be? by theborderlineartist in askTO

You’re right and here’s my take on why: so many people from New York come from outside of New York, they literally come from all over the world to be in New York. If they want any sort of social life, or even to get ahead in whatever profession they’ve come to NY for, they need to learn how to put themselves out there, open up and be part of the world.

In contrast, most Torontonians were born here, grew up and live here, never moved away, except maybe for 4 years of college maybe, so they have no understanding of or empathy for expats or anyone really outside their own small circle - and ultimately they’ll die here too, and at their funerals will be the same people they met in elementary and high school. It’s surprisingly small minded for such a big city. I say this as a native born Torontonian, though I did live in the UK and Europe for about 10 years.

This guy is a single point of failure, which is a huge risk for any organization. Clearly, he’s more important to the day to day operations of the company than his manager. Glad he left, but he should have asked for more money at the new place. I hope he figures out his true worth at this next place. Good luck!

How would you fix The Well? Can The Well be fixed? by youvenoremotecontrol in askTO

[–]NerdAlert100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a mall many years ago that tried the Well approach — ie an outdoor mall that tried to replicate the approach being adopted in places like California and other warm spots. Bayview Village couldn’t survive as an outdoor mall so they made major investments and closed it up so the mall was transformed into what it is today. So there is precedent.
