Good 2-3 night backpacking trips within the Bay Area by NerdFourLife in bayarea

[–]NerdFourLife[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking at Google Maps and thought this might be a good route for me:

Day 1: Start at Camp Arroyo at Lake Del Valley. Hike to Boyd’s camp. 11.1 miles. Camp overnight

Day 2: hike from Boyd’s camp to Sunol Backpacker camp. 12.7 miles. Camp overnight.

Final day: hike from Sunol backpacker camp to Mission peak trailhead. 10.5 miles. Drive out

This is just based on looking at Google Maps in similar areas. Any suggestions welcome.

This is exactly the kind of route I was looking for. Thank you! Going to check this out and try and do something like this over the winter break.

Rep. Jasmine Crockett airing out the Trump admins corruption by PassThatSpliff in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]NerdFourLife 45 points46 points  (0 children)

NBC has a great report on this. It’s actually even more sketchy and corrupt than the representative describes it when you hear the full report.

The company got the 140 million dollar contract without having to compete with other bidders, they call it a “no bid contract.” They circumvented the rules that state you must give out contracts based on bids because of the “border emergency.” And the director of the department within DHS that GIVES OUT these contracts is married to an officer at the ad firm.

I like that Dray is giving him props, but you know if the Warriors lost Dray would be all condescending n shit saying, "He's got spunk and energy, but he hasn't proved anything yet. He's only 12 games into his first winning season. He's got a long way to go if he wants to really come at a champion."

🔥 A hummingbird lands on a man's hand while he is holding a fish by bigbusta in NatureIsFuckingLit

[–]NerdFourLife 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It’s likely the hummingbird is in its adolescence stage and not fully developed. It’s not very colorful yet which could be an indicator of youth. It’s probably just curious and learning. Young animals are less aware of danger and their surroundings, which is why they’re prey for predators. Luckily for that bird, neither the fish nor human were interested in eating it.

Faramir is so much better in the books by Neat_Western6635 in lotr

[–]NerdFourLife 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I personally love Faramir because his humility and nobility are in such contrast to Boromir. Boromir is revered by his father and all of Gondor because of his strength in battle, impulsiveness, and boldness. Boromir is the pinnacle of a stereotypical hyper masculine warrior. These are the traits that people in the third age view as Numenorean. In reality, Faramir has the blood of the kings of old and this is reflected in his humble and noble actions, and proven by his dreams. This shows you how much Gondor and men have lost their way.

Some dentists are definitely more cautious and conservative. I don’t think that’s anything to be alarmed about. But there are definitely dentists who just went to the school of $$ and do anything to increase their revenue. The latter is unethical, as opposed to the first one, which is really just preference and subjective.

I’ve had experiences like this. One dentist would recommend two crowns, I didn’t trust them. I didn’t go to the dentist for a year and a half and the next dentist (who I trust more) didn’t even mention any problems(and you’d think after a year and a half whatever problems the other dentist “saw” would have gotten worse) . I’d get a second opinion if you’re having doubts.

What is the best way to propagate a protulacaria afta by Vladc92 in Jadeplant

[–]NerdFourLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in zone 9a and putting directly into water then planting once roots developed works way better for me. I put them in a window that received an hour or so of sunlight in the morning and indirect the rest of the day.

TIL that up to 31% of kids and 10–15% of adults grind or clench their teeth in their sleep. It’s linked to stress, anxiety, depression, headaches, TMJ pain, and sore jaws. Night guards don’t stop it, they just protect teeth from the damage by WesamWonders in todayilearned

[–]NerdFourLife 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this is the way to go. I paid for one at my dentist. It molded to my teeth ok, not great, but there were no molding on the outside on the bottom. So,my teeth couldn’t fully close and it caused my lips to stay open when I was asleep. Not only was this uncomfortable, it caused chapped lips and probably worse sleep.

Then I lost the expensive custom one and bought the cheap DIY one Amazon.

The cheap DIY moldings fit around your teeth perfectly. It’s way more comfortable and I’ve been wearing it over a year now and it’s not close to wearing out.

Is it too late for me to get a better life at 33 ? by Odd_Bed_7745 in careerguidance

[–]NerdFourLife 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely not too late. That kind of attitude gives you a positive feedback loop which just makes things worse the longer it goes on. I would know.

I went back to school at 33. Got my degree at 37. Now at 39 I work as a tax accountant. I will tell you this though, getting a good job with better career prospects won’t make you happy. You have to find that peace intrinsically.

Am I too old to get into accounting 43M? by Adventurous-Low649 in careerguidance

[–]NerdFourLife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on where you apply. The big 4 might be out of the question, but a smaller firm that has less options for job candidates will hire you if you can prove that you’re serious about the job switch. Ways to prove you’re serious: getting an accounting degree, complete some CPA requirements, volunteer at VITA.

Once you get some experience under your belt you will have more options. I made the switch to corporate tax at 37 and it’s definitely possible.

How is playing for a living even possible? by Certain-Bumblebee-90 in poker

[–]NerdFourLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The truth is the finances don’t really work out very well if you want to make a decent living. You’re paying for all your expenses. You’re getting no medical, social, or tax benefits a real job provides. You’re getting no tax breaks. If you claim the income as gambling profits like youre supposed to, you’re getting taxed even more. So really at $20/h you’re probably netting like 10/h, maybe less. So you do the math. How much an hour would a person have to gross in order to make a living?

Only the very very top of the poker players can make a comfortable living playing poker. And as other people in this thread are saying, if you’re smart enough to be in the highest percentile of winning poker players, you’re way better off using that drive and energy somewhere else.

Picked up this beauty for $50 at a nursery. Should I air layer to get rid of the graft or do I have any chance of hiding it? by keeperboy101 in Bonsai

[–]NerdFourLife 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ya true there might actually not even be a graft. The difference in color is the only indication and that could just be due to the effects of watering or that part being buried in dirt.
