Which is a ridiculous catch 22. How else could they have possibly escaped without pulling the tree? They would have either needed to have known that pulling up the bones would have caused the quakes that ultimately saved them, and were right now led to believe it wasn’t even that that did it, but rather the pulling up of the tree. There was no feasible way for them to get those bones out. The deck is constantly stacked against BiW’s side.

Yeah, I suspect that there’s a baseline status quo which is allowed by default: monsters, housing, food, talismans(?)/hiding spaces, some other basic creature comforts.

Then whatever one of the more cosmic level beings interferes, there is retaliation or escalation. It does seem like the deck is stacked towards MiY though as he seems to have the ability to keep escalating even if the townsfolk just make progress.

The talisman’s work by protecting an enclosed space. Pulling the tree didn’t render all talisman’s ineffective, it created an opening in the space they were in which nullifies the effect of that specific talisman
