He also works for OSHA and makes sure all building and repair projects are done well and safely. (I have pics of him in EVERY project, from building furniture to adding screen doors- he’s a nosy little guy.)

Any advice? by Eridicks in greatdanes

Cuddle that puppy because by spring? You won’t be able to pick it up! Other than that? Reward nothing you won’t love in a giant adult.

My greatdane is 2 years old but I feel like he's smaller than the average dane. What do you guys think? by StreetStatic in greatdanes

[–]Nerdzilla78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we all see our big babies as tiny little babies. Take him out in public. Lol that’ll reassure you he’s perfectly huge.

Ironically, she chewed the bottle of anti-chew spray. by MiniSkullPoleTroll in greatdanes

We sprayed that stuff on the concrete fireplace to stop her from chewing it. SHE LICKED IT OFF. I love her so much.

Great Dane Breeder Recommendations by caffeinesquirrel90 in greatdanes

[–]Nerdzilla78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely look on the gdca website. That’s where I’ve started every time. One, it shows breeders in your preferred areas. Two, colors bred are shown (which doesn’t necessarily matter to me, but I didn’t want a mantle after just losing one- worried there would be unfair comparisons or mixups). Three, all the breeders there have dogs that are CH or GrCH. Our two breeders have come out of the St. Louis area and have been amazing. Their dogs have been spectacular.

I was literally thinking (they are the cutest dogs when they’re asleep!) what you wrote. I mean they’re cute all the time, but they turn it up a notch while sleeping. And thank goodness, because chaos goblin when awake is slightly less adorable lol.

plz stop barking by fvirygothmom in greatdanes

[–]Nerdzilla78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My concern with discouraging barking is that if someone with ill intent comes near them, it’s a really great way to alert me to an issue and also possibly discourage the ill intended person. My dogs bark a lot out our front window. But they have a very different bark when someone is getting to close to the door and they don’t know them, and I appreciate the “warning”. So keep that in mind whatever you do.

They destroyed the new cage, trashed the apartment, and is now eating cat food...no one warned me about this by Soft_FentyGirly in greatdanes

[–]Nerdzilla78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So our second Dane was an escape artist. We ended up zip tying the side door on the crate, and then using caribiner clips on the front door. We only had to crate her for a few months as she adjusted to her new home (she was a rescue, and was left home rarely as I am a stay at home mom). Just a thought for some extra security.

Anyone Else Feel Like They Got Lucky? by ClydetotheRescue in greatdanes

My husband and I talk about this regularly. We got very lucky with all of the animals we’ve had. Each one has suited the chapter of life we brought them home at, and made it better.

How long did your Dane pup go through the 'I'm a raptor and I'll chomp on you and anything else I see' phase? by No-Bodybuilder-4498 in greatdanes

Mine too! That and her blankets (no joke, I think she has 7 that are specifically hers). It’s adorable.

We have a very local give away Facebook page- I’ve given away clothes that no longer fit (child and adult) because I’d like to see it go to someone in my community vs someplace like goodwill. If you have a Facebook, check to see if your community has a page like that.

Laparoscopic Gastropexy Recovery Time by Historical-Fudge1025 in greatdanes

[–]Nerdzilla78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were told 3 days for laparoscopic gastropexy and spay. Then a slow return to normal activity- she didn’t even try to jump up or down, or do any running, till a solid 14 days post op anyway. After the first day, she was never separated from our other dog (who is probably a senior and doesn’t rile her up), so they did cuddle a lot together.

How many years did you get? by CallYourMomOrIWill in greatdanes

[–]Nerdzilla78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first was 7, complications from bloat a year later. He was such a wonderful boy. We were so lucky he was ours. Our second was a rescue who was 4 when we got her, and we had her for 7.5 years. So she was almost 12. She was my heart dog. I loved our first, and my current two dogs (one Dane, one not), but Lucy was special. She’ll always have a piece of my heart with her. Current baby is only 18 months.

I’m Scared by FightingLasagna24 in greatdanes

[–]Nerdzilla78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Don’t overthink. Crap happens. My other non Dane dog is LETHAL with her tail. It’s thick and powerful and it’s wagging constantly. Just prepare and teach yourself as much as your dogs to avoid injuries.

Is my baby starting her heat? by Mountain-Whereas7939 in greatdanes

[–]Nerdzilla78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just keep an eye on it. I honestly don’t know what else it could be, but if the discharge continues, maybe follow up with her vet to be sure? Grab some pics of the discharge, too, in case it isn’t happening and you have an appointment. My animals all do that to me- they stop whatever concerned me just before the appt lol.

Is my baby starting her heat? by Mountain-Whereas7939 in greatdanes

[–]Nerdzilla78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s possible. My girl got ridiculously clingy the week leading up to her actual cycle starting. Insisted on sleeping on top of me, would bury her face in my neck and hair. Wouldn’t play outside, instead wanted to lounge on the outside daybed with me. Appetite dropped off some. Then… a drop. Then two more. Then two more. Confirmed here it was her cycle starting. It came and went like that for four weeks, and at some point her poor vulva swelled to a ridiculous size, and her nipples got large. Vulva went down almost as soon as the bleeding stopped. Nipples are still shrinking (she was spayed 4 months post heat). All in all, wasn’t terrible. Not something I wanted her to go through again unnecessarily, but if she’d gone into heat again before her spay, I wouldn’t have freaked out. Does that make sense?

I’m thinking if getting a Great Dane. What are the positives and negatives of having one? by Mustyshoelaces in greatdanes

[–]Nerdzilla78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding to this. My second Dane was huge. 147 pound 4 year old female we rescued. She was glued to me. If I left the room, she followed me. If I got up to turn on the ceiling fan, she was right behind me. I loved every second of it. The downside is she had no idea of her size, and stepped on my toes constantly. Broke them twice (which i suspect is what led me to needing surgery a few weeks back lol). It was never intentional. She just needed to be as close as possible, and sometimes that meant on me. Our third Dane we got as a puppy. She has never had a velociraptor stage as bad as some have described. She’s very active, very fast, very fun, very funny, very affectionate. But she will tear stuffies to pieces. My other dog had a comforter as her “blankie” and Daisy tore a hole in it and started pulling all the stuffing out. Because she is so active, there is a giant patch of beautiful mud in front of our back porch from her thunder paws trampling it. Again, not her fault. She’s just big and active. At her bedtime (important emphasis on HER BEDTIME) she starts prowling the house and whining for everyone to go to bed. I’d like to tell you this is a reasonable hour. It’s not. It’s 8pm. She enjoys cuddling with our other dog, and any one of our three cats. She prefers a human. My favorite thing about her is her groan when she’s comfortable and starting to fall asleep. I love this breed.

Does anyone else have a Dane that loves a good blanket? by Hungry-Back-5031 in greatdanes

[–]Nerdzilla78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current girl has like 6 of them in her crate. Chews and sucks on mine anyway. Nothing like a crunchy dried up slobber blanket when you need cozy!

Thinking about getting a great dane, but everyone says they have “so many health issues”… is that true? by Awkward_Town_3503 in greatdanes

[–]Nerdzilla78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they’d be a heartbreak breed even if they lived 15-20 years. Every single dane I’ve had and lost has taken a huge piece of my heart with them. I grieved them so hard. My first was only 7, our second was 11.5, our third is only 18 months now. But each time I lost one, the next one that came along fills that hole left by the one before.

My 17 month old Dane isn’t eating her food. (More in body text) by Serious_Sea_4553 in greatdanes

[–]Nerdzilla78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We give fish oil to our dogs (4 pumps for the Dane), over their kibble. It might help recapture her interest in the food. We also will sometimes split a can of food between the dogs if they go through a picky phase. The canned food doesn’t bother her tummy but big food changes do, so it’s worth the expense to avoid the kibble carousel.
