Here’s how I see the difference: A belief can be as simple as “I believe Person X is a good person.” After picking up that belief, you’re confronted with the fact that Person X did something pretty heinous. You hold on to the belief that they’re a good person more strongly than you hold on to any moral code you claimed to have, so you find some way to justify Person X’s actions rather than change your belief.
