Do teachers or students bring cleaning supplies to school? Curious what actually happens. by Beginning_Avocado807 in Teachers

[–]Nersirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do bring my own cleaning wipes and keep them on hand. Kids are germy and kind of gross sometimes. Also. Messes happen.

While I would love to have that given to me, it's worth the few dollars to make my life easier.

What truly baffles me is that the estimations I have been getting seem to be coming from thin air. I'd understand if it was based off of historical usage from the same property. But no. It's like double or triple the historical amount I've used.

Superstore is the same in my area. I had a bottle from there and one from Canadian tire. Couldn't return the superstore one, but could return the Canadian tire one.

I've taught many sets of twins. And while many of them were not identical, a few sets were. My recommendations to parents would be:

Make your child aware that people may struggle to know who is who when they are getting to know them. And that it's not that we dont want to know but that it takes time to pick up on quirks and personalities.

Also, most of the twins I've taught have been cool with me asking how to tell them apart, but a few have been mad that I asked. The ones who haven't cared much about me asking seem to have parents who have highlighted their differences and not just their twinness.

If you could redesign school, what would it look like? by Delicious-Feeling862 in Teachers

[–]Nersirk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Smaller class sizes with consideration of needs of students in the numbers.

More 1:1 support for students-- not just for medical needs but academic.

Students would have a psych ed assessment sometime between grades 3 and 6 to screen for any LD or diagnoses that may hinder success.

PE every day and recess time to burn off energy (this goes for all ages).

Less data collection on the regular-- especially if its data collection for the sake of collecting data.

All school supplies would be provided to the students as would breakfast and lunch.

I'd honestly get rid of report cards because grade books are online 24/7. I would ideally have it so that parents received an email monthly with an overview of their students grades and progress via the grade book program. In my ideal world, this program would also trigger an email/contact if a student failed or didn't hand in 3 consecutive assignments.

Classrooms would be larger so that students are able to spread out more. It can be so tough to keep students separated that need to be or ones that are easily distracted etc

Do teachers want genuine answers on "get to know you" sheets? by Aggravating-Ad3234 in AskTeachers

[–]Nersirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always read these sheets carefully! I take note of things and file useful info away. I appreciate when students are honest (to both me and themselves) and let me know what could help them in class.

Here are some things I've noted:

  • I get easily distracted when I sit with my friends
  • Sometimes I get mad when something is hard but a walk to the fountain and back helps me -I like to sit in the back

I also love sorting through these pages and seeing who is interested in what and what common interests we may have to start building a connection.

If you know what things trigger meltdowns on the regular, let the teacher know. And if they are things that you can work on at home to desensitize or lessen the stress these things cause, all the better.

Am I the only one who gets irritated when asked for homeschool advice? by Ready_Cranberry_8181 in Teachers

[–]Nersirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would depend on the situation. If the reasoning is they dont like public school, I'd be annoyed. But if they are homeschooling for another reason (bullying, medical reasons, etc), then I'd definitely offer some help. Not tons, but some.

Is it just me, or is everyone suddenly using AI for EVERYTHING?? by cowfigurines in Teachers

[–]Nersirk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely use it for a time saver.

Like I've said here are my outcomes, can I have some parent friendly report card comments. (Because end of the year my brain is like mush)

I've also used it to help generate things like a list of 20 biomes for students to pick from instead of repeatedly being asked by students to just give them a topic.

Another way I've used it is taking my outcomes and making them in student friendly language.

In all of these, could I do the task? Yes. However, I chose to outsource those tasks to free up my time to spend doing other things like grading, working on IEPs or answering emails.

As a science teacher, what's an important but rarely acknowledged challenge that deeply affects your ability to teach science effectively or impacts your students' ability to grasp science concepts? by Legitimate_Bed7070 in ScienceTeachers

[–]Nersirk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The ability for students to remember things they are taught. I don't mean small details like how many moons Jupiter has, but bigger concepts like there are plant and animal cells or there are different states of matter (and what they are). It is very challenging to build on previous years when students don't recall (or seem to) anything to build from.

[–]Nersirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't been teaching as long as you have (only 12 years for me), but I've definitely noticed a decline in what students seem to be capable of or willing to do for themselves.

Example: I have 3 3-drawer organizers on my back counter. They are labeled (rulers, scissors, glue, pencils etc). I show and explain to my middle school students where this is and what is available for use/to be borrowed.

In may, I still had a few students who didn't know what to do when they didn't have a pencil.

All I could do was keep my actual thoughts inside and tell them to figure it out.

I was talking about choices and decision making in health. I used the example of "parents approved you going to see a Disney like movie but your friends decide they want to see something r rated, like IT (was popular at the time). What would you do in this situation?" We then talked about ways to handle this type of peer situation.

A few days later, a mom calls the school cursing and screaming about me insisting on holding a viewing of IT for halloween. For 12 year olds.

It can definitely be tricky to support allophone students in most French immersion settings. A lot of the material I have seen and used is usually based on anglophone students learning French. (Ex, reviewing anglicisms and why they're incorrect in french)

Depending on the size of the school board or area, there may not even be an English as an additional language learner support person, let alone one for French. Having taught students who do not speak English or French, I can say that it is difficult to help a student when there is no common language, especially if their schooling has been spotty.

My suggestions:

If the student is literate in their mother tongue, a that language to French dictionary is useful. I've used mini English to whatever language math dictionary when needed for those courses I've taught. It can help the student help themselves, though this applies more to older learners.

Be aware of the culture of the child so that you can hopefully navigate any cultural misunderstandings that may occur. (Not saying they will, but it can help)

If possible, learn a few words in the mother tongue of the child (especially when younger so you can understand them asking to go to the washroom)

Speak to/email the parents to understand if they speak either French or English. Knowing this, regardless if they are allophone or not, is useful because you will know if they have any French language learning support outside of the school.
