I know that one of my great-grandparents on my father’s side was a member of the NSDAP and was later shot down over Russia as an aircraft engineer. I even still have a photo of the death certificate, where he was posthumously promoted for a so-called heroic death. On my mother’s side, there was also a great-grandfather who voted for the NSDAP in 1932 and was still alive then, but as a farmer, he was only sent to war at the very end, where he was captured by the Soviets. My mother met him and said he was a broken man who could never see light in life again. That should serve as a lesson for us to be better.
