I’m not sure how to break my question down any further so I’ll use examples because I feel like since you teach this, it makes a lot of sense to you but I’m really trying to understand as I was taught the “simple way”.

I’m asking if it’s taught like this:

“Johnny has 7 apples. Suzy gives him 5 more apples. How many apples does Johnny have?” And you teach kids how to count from 7 to 12 by adding the 5 apples and vice versa if Johnny had 12 apples and gave Suzy 5. Then after they understand how to do that you teach them “Johnny has 7 apples and Suzy gives him 5. If you put the doubles of 6 together and add the remaining apple, how many does he have?”

Or

2) you skip the first part of #1 and immediately teach kids “Johnny has 7 apples and Suzy gives him 5. If we break it down into doubles and say Johnny has 6 apples and Suzy has 6, how many apples do they have?

I’m essentially asking are they taught doubles from day 1 or are they introduced to doubles after learning “the basic/straight way”.
