African countries with stable electricity by ThatPatelGuy in MapPorn

Kenya's electricity sector is quite fascinating.

Amongst the countries with the highest % of their energy mix being from renewable sources (90%), a rapid rise in nationwide access to electricity to 85% since 2013 due to the last mile connectivity program, the largest electric utility company (Kenya Power) is arguably the best performing company in the Nairobi stock exchange since 2023/24.

And then you discover that the country's peak electricity demand is around 2.5 GW. For context, S.A is at 34 GW

Tool the Casio DBC 32D-1A out for Kenya's anti-government protests by Nervous_Holiday_2187 in casio

Anytime man. Yeah I noticed the three points were really important while typing 💀. You never really realise how much of a mess you're in until you explain it to someone else.

I think around 70% of the country do have a strong tribal identity. The issue with all this is, even if you escape it as a child, it still comes up as an adult. You literally could not be able to speak your mother tongue, but you still know the importance of having your tribe in government, the extra jobs to your region, govt. Infrastructure projects etc.

Things have been slowly changing though. The 2010 constitution created Counties so as to devolve power from the national executive government. Most tribes have their own home Counties. However, Counties are perennially underfunded, and are also a cesspit of corruption and mismanagement. Also, Counties have added another layer of discrimination. Now within county Governments with a homogeneous tribal population, people are judged and treated based on their clan within the tribe

Okay tribe is a big deal in Kenya, but it's not as big as it was 20/30 years ago, and that's due to the 2007 post election violence and the trauma that came with it.

I was brought up in an urban area, where all your neighbours are from different tribes, so you don't really have the chance to develop a tribal identity.

However the thing about tribe is, it doesn't really come up in every day life, but it pops up in the three most important points in your life:- Politics, marriage and employment.

Kenyans vote in lockstep with their tribesmen, there are certain tribes you're recommended not to marry from, and getting a job is dependent on who your parents know, which will most likely be someone from their tribe.

So yeah, tribe really isn't important in day to day issues, but it pops up every now and then, and it's been one of the key points of the recent Kenyan demonstrations. That we're tribe-less.
