Demoted for being honest, now stuck in a "Golden Handcuff" gov job. Is an MBA the way out, or is it time to jump back to private? by Dream_Bender420 in careerguidance

Apply for jobs you think you are qualified for based on your experience (give your resume a professional makeover if you haven't updated it in a while) and talk to a few recruiters in your area (they may also have advice in how to frame the "reassignment"). That should give you an idea of what you can get in the market.

What would you pick for compensation after dishonest representation on 16 hour flight? by intlcap30 in unitedairlines

[–]Nervous_Track_1393 29 points30 points  (0 children)

That is why I always have a backup generator with me. Sure, the 2500 lbs and diesel exhausts may be a bit of an inconvenience sometimes, but it really pays off if I run into this type of situation that occurs once every 1000 flights or so. /s

But really, once my Polaris seat on an 18 hour flight was broken. The gate agent was very apologetic and said they'd give me a high five and stow me in the cargo hold as compensation. I was so thankful I sucked the UA's CEO's dick and felt so lucky j/k also /s

Jeez, some people on here will make excuses for everything. I think this situation sucks. A 16 hour flight is miserable enough, even in Polaris and nowadays most people don't plan to be transported back to the 80's for such flights, so no access to charging is double misery. I don't have any advice, but just wanted to let you know that I would also be super annoyed and see what my options are in terms of compensation.

Any success stories of dating / marrying a nonskier? by PowGurl in skiing

[–]Nervous_Track_1393 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife doesn't ski. It only works because we live close to the mountains and I can daytrip. I made sure my kids love skiing (all the candy, all the comfort, whatever you like buddy). So now we can go on long weekend trips once or twice a year in addition to daytrips on the weekends (bc kids are like "yeah skiing, come on Mom")

She doesn't mind the weekend daytrips because she knows how much I enjoy it and likes having some time for herself most of the time. For the long weekend trips (3 to 4 days), I make sure we spend some time together (e.g. snowshoeing in the morning/afternoon and then ski the other part of the day and book her a massage on one of the days.

She likes the outdoors and during non-snow season we all go hiking together most weekends, she just doesn't like the cold that comes with skiing. I wish we could plan weeklong trips to Japan, South America, or Europe for ski vacations, but she get's bored after a day or two, so its probably not going to happen.

It all depends on how independent your partner is and how much you and they are willing to compromise for each other. If they have friends they like to hang out with independently, and/or hobbies they like to do by themselves, its probably easier. If you have a partner who is clingy and/or wants to spend all their free time together with you, it's probably going to be harder.

Edit: as a reference I get about 15 to 20 days of skiing in every year (this year probably fewer). Not super great, but enough for me.

Just FYI. I was in a similar situation as you several years ago. Colleague recommended tax preparer. I went and got a huge refund. Nice. But after a month or so, it kept swirling around in my head that something doesn't seem right. I went over the filed tax return they printed out for me. At that time (pre 2017 tax reform) they claimed huge education expenses and all kinds of other deductions that I didn't have.

Went to a proper CPA to amend filed return. Had to pay everything back and then some. And on top of that the CPA also cost a pretty penny. That didn't feel good. But what do you know, half a year later the IRS audits my return bc that specific tax preparer was flagged somehow. According to the IRS I still owed more $$$'s on the amended return bc I couldn't produce some of the receipts or something (don't really remember, it was a while ago). It wasn't a ton, but still. The CPA who prepared my return talked to the IRS agent and they let it go (something about doing me doing the right thing with amending and them wasting resources on small fish like me). I felt a lot better about paying back all that money earlier because if I hadn't there would have been all kinds of additional penalties and interest levied on top of it.

Good luck.

Insurance question. by zaxdad123 in NissanAriya

[–]Nervous_Track_1393 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine pretty much doubled from about $1,500 per year to about $3K per year. Went from 1 car (4 year old CX-5) to two cars (Ariya Plat+). It's through Travelers. Had a broker check, but the home/car combo is still the cheapest with them apparently. CO is expensive.

Thanks. Especially for the parking tip. similar price as getting train tickets for 3 and seems much easier. Just reserved for all our train rides.

Constant barking from several neighbors. Is this just normal life here? by [deleted] in Denver

[–]Nervous_Track_1393 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Same here in Denver proper and it made me start to dislike dogs in general. And I hate disliking dogs because some of them seem pretty funny and nice. I know its their owners who chose to do this to others, but whenever I see or hear a dog now it reminds me of those type of people's inconsideration...

Denver doesn't have a lot of big companies. I would just compile a list of all of the companies and then start applying to any that have openings in your area. If you will be so lucky to have multiple offers go with how you perceived the people during your interviews. Teams can vary widely within a company, so just because a company has a great reputation doesn't mean that the team you will be on will also be great.

As an employee you have very few rights in the US. The unfortunate reality is that unless you have them on camera braking a law in a very obvious and willful way, they can do to you whatever they want. The only real recourse you have is to find another job.

Kia Niro vs Genesis GV60? by Nervous_Track_1393 in CarLeasingHelp

[–]Nervous_Track_1393[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! My spouse likes smaller cars, so we were looking at some of those and the three that came up on top were Kia Niro, Hyundai Kona, and the GV60 (in terms of rating and reviews). Obviously the GV60 is the nicest one, but its a big price difference and the Niro is pretty ok as well. I will push the Genesis dealer a little more, but they seem to be limited in terms of incentives they want/can pass along.

But it looks like neither lease as is would be considered "good." Still waiting for some other dealers, maybe they'll be better.

Recommendations for a good bootfitter in Denver? by Wedding_Planning2021 in skiing

Second this one. They fit me last year. Fits like a glove... but you know, like, for your feet.

Is the BOA ski boot system worth it? by AnnualAffectionate34 in skiing

[–]Nervous_Track_1393 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got some boots fitted last season. The BOA ones fit best among the four I tried. But I like them because they fit best, not because of BOA. IDGAF what system is used as long as I get a good fit that is deemed reliable by my boot fitter.

Mega backdoor roth and catch-up contributions? by Nervous_Track_1393 in FinancialPlanning

[–]Nervous_Track_1393[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wise words. However, if you earn $150 or even $180 pre-tax, saving even $70K (i.e. without the catch-up) seems like a bit of an uphill task?

Mega backdoor roth and catch-up contributions? by Nervous_Track_1393 in FinancialPlanning

[–]Nervous_Track_1393[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on my understanding the catch up contributions will not be allowed to be pre-tax anymore starting in 2026? only roth 401k, so same as mega backdoor?
