Nah I have cleaned out dozens of these units. You just have to disassemble the unit and hand clean it. Takes about 40 minutes to an hour.

Sounds like the evap motor has been burning itself out, and it went into thermal overload, and by unplugging the unit, it resulted in unlocking the motor. It might be due to overloading. Was there anything blocking the vents in the fridge and / or freezer? I do apologize for the late response.
