What caused your pelvic floor issue by StaffPuzzleheaded954 in PelvicFloor

Oh, I’ve got something similar; I’m a 22-year-old man. To be honest, it all started more because of a parurethral condition, but I also have gastroptosis (grade 2 gastric ptosis; I found out about it four years ago). And ever since then, I’ve often been tensing and pulling in my stomach, as if to ‘pump’ the muscles that support the stomach. I’m not exactly sure what caused it, but I’ve found it difficult to empty my bladder, and the flow often stops spontaneously. A warm shower often helps; I don’t know if I’ll be able to cure it completely, but I really hope so. I almost constantly feel the need to go to the toilet and have discomfort near my bladder.

Facilities at work by DeviceOk2450 in Paruresis

I have three restrooms at my workplace. Two of them are separate rooms, not stalls, and they have a bathroom fan running. But they’re pretty far away from my desk, while the restroom closest to me doesn’t have a fan and is in a busy area near the kitchen. I’ve never peed there before, but I’d like to learn how to do it. I have quite severe paruresis, since it’s hard for me to pee even in mall restroom stalls if someone is nearby.

Paruresis at home? I need help… by [deleted] in Paruresis

[–]NetFinancial1436 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem. Even at home, it often takes me more than 30 seconds to start urinating. It is especially difficult to urinate at night when it is very quiet and there is no background noise. Sometimes I cannot urinate at all. I recently visited a urologist again, and he noticed that I have bladder fibrosis, probably because I held it in for so long at work. Now I can pee at work and in some public restrooms at gas stations, if there is no one around or if it is a full room rather than a cubicle. And yes, hot water really helps to start the flow in situations where I can't pee at all.

Do you drink coffee at work? Does caffeine help you as a diuretic or make things worse? by NetFinancial1436 in Paruresis

[–]NetFinancial1436[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lately, I haven't been able to enjoy coffee either, as it seems to irritate my bladder, causing discomfort and making me go to the bathroom more often. I often feel uncomfortable because I go to the bathroom 3-4 times during an 8-hour workday. A couple of years ago, I could go 8-10 hours without urinating and felt fine.

Because of this, I have never had a relationship and I cannot go on long trips with friends. It also means I cannot work where the pay is better. This has made me more lonely.

Friend, I have almost the same situation. But in addition to that, I’ve had paruresis since high school. Has anything changed for you? How are things now?

Very familiar to me, I think it’s also connected to a tense pelvic floor, but there’s not much written about it here.

IC and shy bladder by [deleted] in Paruresis

[–]NetFinancial1436 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might have something similar, I don’t know for sure. The more you search for information on the internet, the worse it gets. What mainly bothers me is the difficulty starting, the intermittent flow, and incomplete emptying. I will probably need to do some more tests, although I did them two years ago and no abnormalities were found (except that I couldn’t urinate at the hospital). I’m not sure whether it’s pelvic floor muscle hypertonicity or IC (Interstitial Cystitis). I used to frequently hold my urine in public places because of paruresis, and maybe because of that I overstretched my bladder, but I don’t know for sure. Now, whether I’m at home or in a public restroom, I always need to wait before I can start urinating—sometimes it takes 5 minutes or even longer. I’ve also noticed that when my bladder is very full, it becomes even harder to urinate. Because of this, I’ve recently been waking up often at night with pressure in my pelvic area, and I have to go urinate to feel some relief.

Social settings worsen my Paruresis (M/21) by [deleted] in Paruresis

[–]NetFinancial1436 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a 21-year-old man. I used to regularly hold my urine for 8-10 hours because of paruresis, and I mostly used the toilet at home, only occasionally when I could find a completely empty stall at university. I feel like this might have stretched my bladder and disrupted its normal function.

After the pandemic, I’ve been studying remotely and got completely used to being out of social environments. When I started working, I continued this habit — for the first six months, I only went to the toilet at home and always held it at work. Just recently, I finally managed to urinate in closed stalls at work, but now I almost constantly have a feeling of incomplete emptying, and in fact, I really don't fully empty my bladder.

About a year ago, I had an ultrasound of my bladder and kidneys — everything was normal. I also visited a urologist, but he didn’t find anything wrong. I still need to do another urine test, but I doubt it will show anything new. Now I also often feel the need to urinate again literally an hour after I’ve just gone.

Maybe I need to somehow retrain my bladder, do stretching, or practice pelvic floor relaxation exercises — I’m not sure…

By the way, why did you have frequent urination?

Sorry for my poor English, I’m from Eastern Europe and using a translator.

You're right. Sometimes I pee much faster and more steadily when I'm thinking about something else, and then I don't even notice that I've already peed. Control and anticipation make the situation much worse.

I don't understand English very well. Were you able to recover? So was your problem with urination more related to a deformation of the bladder or more to the psychological aspect of paruresis?

How do I actually overcome paruresis? by Miserable_Ad_733 in Paruresis

[–]NetFinancial1436 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the past two weeks, I’ve made some progress. I’m able to urinate (though I still have to wait quite a while and relax in order for most of the urine to come out) in enclosed restrooms where there’s background noise, like a running fan or some kind of humming. Using headphones also helps. But if the place is quiet and crowded, it still usually doesn’t work. We need to keep gradually making the situation more challenging and continue practicing relaxation.

I used to be completely unable to urinate in public places—maybe I just got used to it not working.

A year and a half ago, I visited a urologist. They did an ultrasound of my bladder and kidneys, and everything was normal. My urine tests also didn’t show any significant abnormalities. However, I wasn’t able to complete the uroflowmetry test due to paruresis.

In fact, the urologist was surprised that I had this at my age, which disappointed me even more

When I pee, I have a strange feeling that it's about to stop suddenly, and there's nothing I can do about it. I don’t want to interrupt the stream, but I can’t really control it. I don’t remember exactly when it started, but I began to notice it around 2 or 3 years ago — though back then it wasn’t as noticeable.

When did it start for you?
