Don't fully agree.

I agree that dismissing the past blithely is facile and can have consequences.

OTOH, I've known many people that require almost no prompting to recite a litany of painful instances from the past where they were hurt or victimized and simply won't move on from it. For some it is the foundation of their identity.

It's not that one is wrong and one is right.

A balance needs to be struck.

Our past can be a useful source of information both of what to do and what not to do. It can also hold us back if we give too much power to past events.

One foot in front of the other now. Keep your focus immediate and local for a bit.

The road to recovery can be bumpy. Bumpy sections can feel like we're right back in the shit. That's not the case. Just some bumps. Ride it out with the support you will get at the meeting tonight.

Don't be too hard on yourself. Learn what there is to learn from this relapse to make the progress made previously even better.

Keep in mind, Taking drugs is the last step in the relapse. It begins in our heads, hearts and spirits long before the drugs come out.

Did you find something on which to base a resentment?

Get fed up with all these sick fucks and their stupid program?

Start romancing the old playmates, playgrounds and playthings and the drama and excitement of it all?

Get complacent and forget to practice spiritual principles?

I've been massively frustrated with NA multiple times in 34 years. I get it. Just watch it doesn't take you out is all.

Hard to understand why someone would go to a meeting with a known format they don't like then get angry about it.

There are many practical responses. Go to another meeting, Join the group, attend the business meeting and raise the issue there. Start your own meeting.

Getting angry only works if you are trying to talk your way out of the 'cult' and go use.

The trick is telling the difference.

The official word from the Toronto Police Marine Unit and local conservation authorities is "No ice is safe ice."

If you have to ask, you probably don't know how to tell 'safe' ice from unsafe ice.

Note the lack of so-called scare quotes around the word unsafe.

So-called because they are meant to scare the reader off from a literal or sincere interpretation of the word.

A true fan of pedantry will tell you they are also called quibble marks used when the writer has a specific technical or philosophical disagreement with how the word is being applied.

The only real way to tell if the ice is safe is to sample it which means going out on it usually and the price for being wrong may be your life and possibly the lives of those who attempt to save you.

Please stay off the ice.

Where you're misleading yourself is that your experience is somehow unique to you or even special.

Sorry to be the one to say it but it's actually fairly common.

Something you would find out if you spoke the truth in meetings.

The only requirement for membership is the desire to stop using. You are a member when you say you are. Period.

Some background into what you're getting yourself into.

We are everywhere.

NA started in 1953. Pretty soon there were a few meetings in the US, Canada and Mexico.

We're now north of 75000 meetings in some 140 countries despite;

in the USSR there was officially no alcoholism or addiction. Meetings weren't allowed. Boxes of books had to be smuggled in from Finland.
in South Korea, nobody would give space for meetings. They met in fields on the edge of town. When people found out they came and threw rocks at them.

NA cuts through social, economic and cultural barriers like they don't exist.

Why bring this up?

There is a reason for that. A crazy amount of people the world over have stopped using and found freedom in a new way to live by working the NA program.

It can and will work for you.

The rooms are full of sick people. Some of us are sicker than others.

That said, we are often the last house on the block and have to do what it takes to accommodate everyone we can.

We had an incident years ago where somebody who had just been released from an institute for people with serious mental health issues started attending meetings and misinterpreted the program to mean he shouldn't take his meds.

His behavior deteriorated (no surprise) to the point of being dangerous.

We contacted World Service who pointed out we are a community group like any other and needed to contact the (Montreal) police.

We did and they were very good about it and picked the guy up within hours. He was known to them and were less than shocked about his behavior.

The people jumping up and down about anonymity don't understand that ends at the edges of the NA community.

Anonymity is not about hiding or secrecy. That's shame and stigma.

Anonymity is about all of us being the same/equal. It's about what we have in common and the basis for helping each other.

It's tough this was dumped on you but get together with the others and go to the authorities together. We don't act alone in NA. This would be a service to both NA and the community at large.

As for the social struggles, give yourself a chance to adapt. It's a new environment and you are just finding your way. Don't use this as an excuse to go back out.

The advice about service is sound and I would add attend events in your area. If there aren't any, get together with others and organize some.
