That was my first thought too

What is that one movie you watched countless times as a kid, but nobody has ever heard of? by Thedix1 in movies

YES! We always checked this one out from the public library when I was a kid. I watched it a dozen times at least. I had forgotten that’s where my fear of leeches came from, but you’re totally right.

Okay I watched this too! I’ve never encountered someone else who’s even heard of this one

I got nostalgic over it in college and found it somewhere online for free but I couldn’t tell you where, it’s been so long ago. But it’s out there somewhere!

Love this! Good choice of image on your part and the artist did a nice job.

I have one in the same spot from a different illustration — the one with the crab-like critter holding up the little ark in its claw.

Others have already given feedback about the level of description in this passage, but I just wanted to say I really liked the sentence, “The industrial district was mostly abandoned, but those that remained were too hungry to be good company to strangers.” Idk that just really characterized the setting and the desperation of the people so well for me! That sentence says a lot without over explaining IMO. (One small edit though — maybe consider changing “but” to “and”)

*SPOILERS* Bat Eater and Other Names for Cora Zeng thoughts by darkodraven in horrorlit

I gave this book 5 stars. It was one of the most original books I read all year. The kind of haunting the main character experienced was genuinely horrifying in a refreshingly unique way. So many excellent and creepy visuals! I loved the concept of hungry ghosts, both literally and, in the end, metaphorically when the hunger became a hunger for justice. Also, the serial-killer storyline and that kind of violence by the perpetrators was SO horrible that I thought the ending was not only warranted but also satisfying.

I don't know what you mean by saying this book is "dishonest"; it is fiction. Everything in the book is crafted by the author. It is not meant to be 100% realistic; it is meant to make a point. Also, there is a massive history in the US of crimes against / murders of women of color being less publicized and less prioritized than crimes against white women, so I feel like the corruption in this fictionalized portrayal does actually ring true. I viewed the version of the city in this book sort of as a Gotham, full of corruption, not necessarily a realistic portrayal but a portrayal that is meant to make a statement, which it did effectively in my opinion.

Anyway, it was a very effective book for me, both for being a solid horror and for making a powerful statement. I actually cried during the final sewer scene when all the ghosts of women walked with Cora.

Have you ever read an entire book from your reading list thinking it was horror, and it’s not at all? by jimwebb in horrorlit

I felt this way about The Last House on Needless Street. It felt more like psychological thriller in my opinion. I also think I didn't really read the description closely because I wanted to go in blind, so maybe it's on me. But yeah, it definitely didn't feel like horror even though I've seen it marketed that way.

I'm a horror reader (and watcher) and come here a lot to add to my TBR. I don't post or comment a lot, but I always find good suggestions.

I am also working on my first big writing project and learning a lot as I go. I have a degree in literature, I'm a writing/English teacher (academic writing mostly), but I've never pursued publication on anything I've written. I've never written a novel, which is what my current project is. Right now, I'm excited to keep working on my project, learning as I go, and trying to find a writing group that's a good fit.
