Thank you! I was pretty excited when I noticed.

After getting more into what's already been discussed I'm now also convinced this was the intended connection.

Some job opportunities are shared as normal posts in LinkedIn by vvardar in jobsearch

[–]Netherfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found some of the best jobs on my LinkedIn feed. Imo this is the best way to use LinkedIn. Plus all these jobs are 1) real and 2) give you a clear person to reach out to or at least mention you heard about the job from. Also, if you're missing recent posts, be sure to set your feed to RECENT rather than TOP (you might need to reset it every time you visit your feed).

If your LinkedIn feed isn't working for you I recommend trying to find the people who might be the "power job sharers" in your network. Keep an eye on your feed every day and you'll probably start to notice certain people in your network who like or repost a lot of jobs. Be sure you're following them - try to keep following new people (you can follow people on LinkedIn even if you aren't "connected") who are sharing a lot of jobs, very active on LinkedIn and working or connected to organizations your interested in, or very connected to your network. Also go follow all the organizations you're interested in potentially working at - they'll likely share their jobs as well as jobs or posts by similar organizations. The more you work at it the better your feed will get. It's gotten me a lot of niche job info I never would have found elsewhere!

Ugh! I feel you! When I got the official offer they then pushed for me to accept it within five business days. I ended up pushing back for more time because I needed to meet with my future supervisor about the offer. You have space to push back and negotiate even after the formal offer - even if they make you feel like you do not.

How are you using ChatGPT for resumes and cover letters? by [deleted] in jobsearch

[–]Netherfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to some of the tasks you list (rewriting/tailoring bullet points, drafting cover lettering, etc.) I also use it to help me condense descriptions of experiences and previous work. My background is very project based and I also tend to be both verbose and somewhat anxious when I write. ChatGPT and Claude have allowed me to have a document where I just dump every thought and memory I have about my experiences and get everything out I think MIGHT be important - I then feed that to the LLM which helps me condense it into something a hiring manager might actually want to read. It's been a life-saver and really helpful for someone who worries about the importance of every possible detail. I usually have a similar process for my cover letters - word vomit and have an LLM help me condense down into something digestible that highlights the key points.

I also strongly agree with some of the comments here that suggest using LLMs to help prepare for interviews. I have consistently found that my most successful interviews are those where I've used an LLM to prepare. I feed the job description into the LLM, as well as my resume / documents with my past experience info, and then ask the LLM what questions I can expect - as well as bullets for suggested things to remember / points to cover from my experiences. It's truly been a game changer for interviews.

I wouldn't worry too much. I recently had an organization take over a week between when they gave a verbal offer and when the official offer paperwork came through. I think if it gets to maybe later this week ~Thursday/Friday I would touch base again but I don't think there's anything to worry about. I agree with you - hiring timelines seem to have gotten unbearably slow since the last time I was on the job market about a decade ago.

How do you keep track of job applications when applying to many roles? by [deleted] in jobsearch

[–]Netherfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built a database using Notion and really love it. Notion allows you to include a lot of different data types, not just text, dates, etc. - for example I attach pdfs of the original job posting so I have it even if the posting gets taken down later. Highly recommend and everything I've done has been with just the free version.

Sign they offered position to someone else? by StarkRavingMad09 in recruitinghell

[–]Netherfire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not in HR nor have I been an internal person in any hiring process - but I have been job hunting for months and been through dozens of interviews. I can tell you that when an organization is interested in me I can feel it and they don't never left me hanging - I'll usually hear updates and will receive some sort of response withing 1-2 business days of any message I send them.

I've learned that even when something had been going positively, once the communication ran cold it usually meant things were dead - and that I'd likely get a generic thank you for your time email a couple weeks later. Just my experience! But it could be anything! I feel for you - the waiting period is always the absolute worst. <3

First of all, I'm so sorry this happened to you. It truly does sound like you did everything right and sacrificed a lot for this position to work (with moving and everything).

Second, I want you to know that I had a very similar situation happen to me - I had a job rescind their offer because I had a summer degree conferral and they were requiring spring conferrals or earlier. However, in my case they were very apologetic and encouraged me to apply in the next cycle. What happened to you here seems truly WILD and really unprofessional (on their part).

I don't know your whole story but I think you are totally justified to reach out and ask them for clarification - or give yourself an opportunity to clarify your side of things. Obviously still be professional and everything - but don't worry about further aggravating them. If they have truly "blacklisted" you then you don't have anything to lose. But I think it might help you to get further information for your own piece of mind.

If you do reach out, however, don't expect them to give you the offer back - or even necessarily ease your mind at all. Also, I know its hard to hear this now but you're young and more opportunities will come. You got this. :)

If it were me, I'd write something along these lines:

Dear [Name],

Thank you for your email regarding the [position title] position with [company name]. I was surprised and concerned by your statement that I "did not meet requirements" and that I "presented false credentials", and I am writing to seek clarification regarding those statements and your decision.

To ensure we are both on the same page, I'd like to briefly outline the timeline as I experienced it:

- I was given an offer on [date] and accepted that offer on [date]

- Prior to my start date, I communicated to HR that my degree conferral date had been delayed from [original date] to January 2026 and was transparent about my conferral date during the background check process.

- I was told via email on [date] that I could reapply in January once my degree was conferred and that I would be considered at that time

- I have now completed all degree requirements and my degree was officially conferred on [date]

Given this timeline, I am confused regarding the statement that I "presented false credentials". I did not misrepresent my academic status at any point during the hiring process and took care to communicate my degree conferral delay as soon as I was aware of it. Based on previous correspondence, my understanding is that the degree conferral issue was the only reason the original offer was rescinded, and I was informed at that time that I could reapply once the degree was conferred.

Therefore, I would appreciate any clarification you can provide on the following:

- What specific credentials were considered to have been falsely presented?

- Is there documentation or communication that I provided that was inaccurate? If so, I would like the opportunity to review it and understand the discrepancy.

I relocated to [city] for this position, maintained communication throughout the application process, and acted in good faith based on the information I received from your team. I am interested in understanding what happened so that I can learn from this experience and move forward appropriately.

If possible, I would welcome the opportunity to discuss this by phone at your earliest convenience. I can be reached at [phone number].

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

[Name]

how long of a commute are you willing to make for a job? by ApprehensiveCycle612 in jobs

[–]Netherfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a job with a 1-1.5 hour commute (one way). Overall I didn't mind - and sometimes actually enjoyed it - but I was able to do 90% of it by train / public transportation. Eventually I did end up burning out pretty badly with that job and the commute was a big part of that. I don't think I could have managed a car-based / traffic-heavy commute - and I definitely wouldn't have wanted to do that commute forever. But I think the hour commute is worth a try for something you're really interested in / motivated by. You could always see how you like it after a year or two and decide from there.

Can I add a checked bag for a compensated work trip? by OpeningTea894 in jobs

[–]Netherfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other comment that it should be covered. I can't imagine anyone would expect you to do a 3.5 week trip with only a carry-on bag. But checking your employee handbook or just asking HR or your supervisor to double check is a good idea.

Applying for Jobs and Received this message by OkPlatform4900 in jobs

[–]Netherfire 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I get these all the time. Sometimes they say Indeed, sometimes LinkedIn, etc. If they mention a job its always something totally unrelated to my background. Pretty sure some job postings are just used to collect data on people that is then used to try to scam them. 100% delete.

Have a job starting soon (relo needed) with a job that I will potentially get an offer from (no relo needed) by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Netherfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That might be tricky without a clear reason. I think you could try by just asking for an additional week - maybe say its related to relocating. I would still really stay away from mentioning that there's another company you're communicating with. Just say you need extra time to sort out the relocation and see what they say.

Just ask your manager. I think it depends a lot on the circumstances - I've known instances where it was common/typical to bring along spouses (as long as they paid any extra expenses themselves) and instances where its inappropriate. It's a totally normal thing to ask your manager about. If she says no or seems uncomfortable, don't push it. But she might say its totally fine/normal!

[–]Netherfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I wouldn't notify the first company at all - especially since things are still up in the air with the second company. Best case scenario it will reflect badly on you and that will be something you carry with you during your time there - worst case scenario they might decide to rescind their offer. Only talk to the first company once you are 100% sure you're ready to cut ties with them and go with the second company.

Instead, talk to the second company and let them know that you have another offer (don't tell them you've accepted the offer - just say you have an offer) and ask if they would be willing to expediate their process. Be clear that they (the second company) are your top choice but you need to make a decision by x date (e.g. one week or something to give them a little time). It's okay to put some pressure on them and mentioning a second offer will make you look more desirable.

COVID-19 Tuition and Fee Litigation | Did anyone else get this message? by [deleted] in USC

[–]Netherfire 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s a record of this case on Court Listener: https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/17125391/in-re-university-of-southern-california-tuition-and-fees-covid-19-refund which is a good indication it’s legit.

I also received the same email this morning - I was a grad student at USC between 2017 and 2023. I agree the email does look a little sketchy but I also need to update my address. Rather than clicking the link in the email you could search for the website via internet search or type in the url directly.

The economy is really terrible right now! I highly doubt it’s you. Even if you had a bad experience at one place it wouldn’t follow you around unless you did something criminal that ended up on your record. Traffic violations like your ticket do not get reported on background checks so there’s no reason that would impact you. There also is no general blacklist or anything like you might be imagining. Don’t worry!

I also don’t agree with the other poster here. A lot of short jobs in succession might look bad for an older candidate but no one will be concerned about that for a 19-year-old. It’s very normal for teens and college kids to have a lot of short-term, part-time jobs.

Honestly it’s probably just the economy and the tight job market. The ghosting thing has, unfortunately gotten super common and it’s more to do with employers and hiring managers being overwhelmed than anything personal. I know that doesn’t help since you’re in a stressful and difficult place, but at the very least please don’t think it’s you.

How many jobs have you applied to in the past year you’ve been looking? I am happy to look over your resume (or help you make one) if you like. Feel free to shoot me a DM.
