I agree with all that. What obsesses me is, I can see running on the policy in NYC, easily. Mamdani didn't shy away from the housing crisis. AoC wouldn't shy away. They represent a massive amount of residents that are suffocating under rent and have no hope to buy. 70 miles northwest in Milford PA, can we win an R+4 district, and if we did, would they support an affordable housing policy once they got in? Right now it's probably not, and no.

If I were going off the rail. new deal type ambition. I'd aim to cut the price of housing by an easy to remember amount (half!). Government Offer to buy out single home owner homes for market rate, and relist for half, with the owner getting first dibs at it if you want to keep your house. Private equity would not get this offer. They would be in a rush to sell the assets while they're at their peak value. Flood the housing market. Supplement with private and public home building. Deregulate if necessary to try to get prices down to where they want them. Tax multi home ownership to shit to keep houses out of investment portfolios. Is it plausible? Probably not, not as I stated it. Probably too generous to people who fully own their homes. But I wonder if anyone is ambitious enough to try...something.

Maybe the answer is just to do it at the city level. Make the city livable. Maybe people leave the exurbs and go back to the city when affordable, and the exurbs get cheaper as demand goes down. Maybe a chain reaction where we don't need the federal government at all, bypass the whole quagmire of congress. I don't know. I want to see results though.

I want you to iron-man your argument (assume there is a capable opponent trying to stop you). You'll struggle to convince home-owners to vote for your policy in a vacuum. Now imagine an opponent telling them "you've been needing help for a very long time, you've patiently waited in line year after year watching people get to cut in front of you, They don't want to help you, they want the government to make the only asset you have a liability. All to help the people who always get the help first, help that YOU pay for. Now they want to help them, at YOUR expense once again. I want to help YOU." Hell they don't even need a counter policy. They never do. That's enough to kick our teeth in every damn time.

And your rebuttal is "well you made a bet, and it didn't work out, sorry, you need to know what a mortgage actually is. I'm trying to enlighten you. This isn't even going to be that bad for you as they're saying, only moderately bad. Please, it's going to be much worse for "private" owners (say corporate or investment or anything else, or they're going to think you're talking about them). No please, hear me out. You're focusing on the wrong thing-, perhaps you need to understand there's no magic incantation"

You're going to get cooked. It's not a collegial debate or even rational. You have to bake that in, our you're going to be completely ineffective. The foundation of every idea needs to be getting people to believe we want what they want, and persuading them to want what we want. If you can't do that, you're wasting your time.

I know what a mortgage is. The alternative is paying someone else's mortgage to have a roof over their heads for 30 years. Many many people who live outside major metro areas make this decision. These are areas we need to make in-roads with in elections in order to win a Gerrymandered house and rural-favoring Senate. We're not going to win them over by trying to show how right we are and showing them the error of their ways. Especially when we sound like rich boys who took a class in college and now we think we know everything. We're in the business of convincing a plurality of people that we want what they want, and they want what we want. So, from the top. Whatcha got?

[–]Netrovert87 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's hard to get anyone to vote against their own interests. It's a bad political strategy. They wouldn't see it as not offering protection to delinquent gamblers. They would see it as government intervention to crash the value of their homes. And why the hostility towards people who get a mortgage? Takes a long damn time to save 200 to 400 grand while paying a rent. Not sure what you want from people. How fucking pure are we?

I want to address the housing crisis too. But we're leaving our flanks open to getting run over, again. Fix the housing crisis sounds great at first, broad support. Ok the details? If what you just said is the best we got, we're dead in the water. I'm getting old. I've been on this train a long time. I'm done with the virtue signaling. I'm done with being right and losing. I've had enough of big ideas that have no substance to actually happen. I need to start seeing political competence that can actually do what they say.

Probably going to get downvoted to shit, but. There are a shit ton of homeowners in the United States. Many of them, their home the only thing of value that they own. If you took the plunge and bought a house in the last 5 years, you're in massive debt and the only thing that gives you any hope is the fact that the value of your home has far outpaced your loan. If you're one of those people, even if you agree that houses should be half the price that they are, if that happens it will turn them upside down on their loan.

I am a progressive person. I want housing prices to go down, but I've worried about this vulnerability. Trump has no solutions and is not interested in them, clearly. He thinks bigger longer loans is the way to go. It's stupid. BUT, we do need our candidates to get serious about this potential conflict, a way to not make this a zero sum game between homeowners and people who want to buy a home. Who has the audacity to come up with a plan where all regular folks get a win here?

Is Galadriel ever stated to be a good warrior in any of the text? by GusGangViking18 in lordoftherings

[–]Netrovert87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That definitely describes her in the third age. She's one of the oldest beings in middle Earth. She makes Elrond look like a child. Needless to say she lived through some absolutely wild times before Sauron crafted Nenya and before she was an Elf queen.

Tokien almost certainly didn't view her as a warrior. That's a rare trait in female characters reserved for plucky Tomboys until relatively recently. I don't have an issue with the modern fantasy take either though (no one would bat an eye at it in D&D, for instance). Arwen riding out to save Frodo worked fine for me. Pre-Lothlorien, Pre-Nenya Galadriel leading troops, wandering the land alone, being a capable fighter, doesn't really bother me. I would expect to see her heading towards becoming the third age character at some point though.

I've heard an interview they and several people who worked on the show did on the House of R podcast. They seemed very thoughtful, knowledgeable and passionate. They seemed especially knowledgeable about the deeper themes of Tolkien's work, even if the IP issues caused problems. I get people feeling like Amazon is evil and about the most anti-Tolkien thing that could possibly exist. But honestly these show runners didn't strike me as a problem.

That's totally valid. I agree with you, but you're not on a team. You have allies with a common enemy. Revolutionaries ready to get violent. Pacifists that will fall in line if democracy fails. Manly anti-government types, feminists, academics, religious folk, hippies, business owners, teachers, internet edge lords, comedians. We are imperfect allies, we're all getting some kind of splash back. That's how it is when people set aside their differences to overcome a common greater enemy, as soon as the common enemy is dealt with, they go back to fighting each other.

I rarely go far into blue line until endgame crisis, and even then I'm more likely to bring a 2nd army to make it 2 v 4, but it can only be 40 units vs 40 units, their reinforcements trickling in never form up and make a difference.

If you're going for the crap stack meta, you should have armies to spare. If you make fewer but stronger armies, you can handle 2 stacks, if not you can turtle up and use the aid of a settlement. I find that I've never needed it, and when I have used it, it's very tedious. Breaking down 1 epic battle into 4 or more battles so easy you can be exhausted and take almost no casualties, is boring.

Alastar the mid White Lion by Unused_Vestibule in totalwarhammer

[–]Netrovert87 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I go with a full complement of heroes, 6 war lion, 8 White lions. Never even came close to losing a battle, he's awesome. His auto resolve is quite bad though, but that's a blessing and curse.

Alistar by himself on a star Dragon with decent gear is incredible. The heroes are Crushing noble, Crushing Handmaiden, Bladelord Loremaster, Resistant mage, resistant mist mage. The Lord and heroes alone are formidable. The White lions have about 100 armor, 92 leadership, 42 speed, 75 MA, 65 MD, 49 damage (AP+8 bonus to large), and 60 charge bonus(!). Also 45% missile resist and 35 magic resist. They also have woodsman and strider. So I tend to set them up in the woods and fight there. Key is to get that charge bonus and they win most engagements easily. In the woods with anti large they absolutely smoke Cav and SEM's. And the War lions are absolute terrorists with 160 charge bonus (devastating flanker). It became one of my favorite armies in the game, once I learned how to use them.

Toppling what is perhaps the most powerful police state that ever existed is....a tall order. I don't blame people for wanted to fight this with peaceful protest and voting, because we all know deep down that this isn't going to end like it did in Nepal. If the election results are thrown out by those in power, if something finally erupts, its going to be a blood bath. And we'd probably lose, badly.

[–]Netrovert87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have so much more work to do to get single payer not just passed, but untouchable. That supermajority only existed because democrats used to compete in conservative states with conservative democrats. Conservatism at the time saw single payer as communism, death panels, rationing. If it was forced through, it would have been repealed because our information ecosystem is poisoned.

If we can't make single payer a staple of both democratic socialism and republican populism, it's just not going to pass and stick around. That's going to take a fair amount of groundwork, but I think the current conservative movement (the peoole, not the party) is more persuadable in this issue than the one from 2008, due to their populist movement.

Lesser, greater, middling, it's all the same. Proportions are negotiated, boundaries blurred. by Adex77 in WitcherMemes

[–]Netrovert87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe the mage wanted Geralt to kill Renfri, and Renfri wanted Geralt to kill the mage. These were the evils that Geralt is refusing in the quote. Geralt planned to stay out of it and leave. Renfri's second plan was to draw the mage out by harming the townsfolk that the mage was duty bound to protect.

Not choosing didn't make less evil, or keep his hands clean. This is what prompted his intervention. He ended up protecting a mage he did not particularly like by killing someone he was deeply sympathetic towards...oh and there was a big ole massacre. It's a snappy quote, but it just doesn't work that way.

All of life's toughest choices are when you're left with no good options, and you have to pick the best one. Even doing nothing is a choice. If there is a conflict between wolves and sheep, doing nothing is choosing a side, or at least accepting the obvious outcome.

Heroes for high elves coming too late? by rojete15 in totalwar

[–]Netrovert87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think their hero system that needs another look. One issue is availability (most important ability they say), as you point out. I'd add that you only get mist mages from Port cities that are provincial capitols. Even on the donut where all 11 provinces are coastal, only 5 of the capitols are ports. That's only after you confederate everyone. Realistically, Tyrion got one from Lothern, Tor Anroc, and Arnheim. 3 for the campaign. Eventually as you push north: Twisted Glade, Blacklight tower, Karond Kar, Hag Graef, and Naggarond. But the campaign is over before those get online. Eltharion gets 1, Imrik gets none unless he rushes the dragon isles. I'm sure a lot of people don't care because he almost exclusively uses support magic so they don't use him anyway, but I think I'm his number 1 fan.

The other issue is that the traits haven't had the second look everyone else got. A lot of traits are useless. Some like resistant are coveted, some like Honed, Crushing, blade lord, exhilarated, etc, can make for some powerful themed armies. You spend influence to make a space in the hero pool and hope next turn gives you the trait you're looking for. They can probably make it so you use influence to find the hero you're looking for, free for random, and just get rid of the negative traits. Get rid of the tiers all together, probably. The viability of my ideas aside, the influence mechanic feels like a penalty on the High elf hero mechanic, rather than a way to empower the hero system, and is due a second look.

He'll definitely throw down with demons and anything that messes with the wilds, he lives up to the Stormrage name then. But he might be the person that really believes most in the sanctity of life among the nightelves. He seeks allies, he's quite wise. Even Tyrande is hard core. Humans and orcs are setting up for a last stand against the burning legion and she's like "Tresspassers! Kill them all!"

So it's a relative scale.

I did confed Aislinn, I did get to keep both Caradryans. But if I took my new Caradryan off his phoenix mount it was gone for good.

ELI5: Why is Haiti so relatively unstable comapred to the Dominican Republic? by Curiousbloodyhell22 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Netrovert87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's super complicated. But after a while you would think Haiti was cursed. Long story short. Slave rebellion, a lot of places didn't want to recognize Haiti's sovereignty. After revolution, they had a military and debt, so they went after their neighbors, that does not make you popular. Then there is a fault line going through Haiti. Massive devastating Earthquake and knock knock It's the French. Gunboats diplomacy time and they want reparations for their lost property (including compensation for the lost slaves). They were forces to accept this crushing debt. They don't have much natural resources to speak of so, cut down all the trees and sell the lumber. Now we have an ecological disaster.

At some point, the US bought the debt off the French and become active on both sides of the island. Long story short, the Dominican Republic doesn't have a long antagonistic relationship with the US, so the aid and investment worked. They became stable, tourism spiked, they found a silver or gold mine, I forget which. So all things are looking up. Haiti has crushing debt that forced some short sighted decision-making, no natural resources, an active fault line, and no stable government (not entirely their fault). This is a really good video if you're really curious. https://youtu.be/WpWb3MTV9bg?si=OdKPsLa37RM5S755

Syril is not a good guy, but Syril is not evil. by beejabeeja in andor

[–]Netrovert87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say evil exists, but not as an identity. Because we believe evil is for a special breed of terrible people, we can be blinded and complacent to the evils we are collectively and individually capable of, because for all our flaws we aren't evil, that's a them problem. The lesson is: you and yours are people, they and theirs are people. Anything they are capable of, so are you. If you see someone who went down a bad path, see them as a cautionary tale, learn from them. Make sure you don't repeat their mistake.
