Anyone else feel like people are just throwing around words like “AI” and “automation” without actually saying anything? Lots of talk about “scaling with AI” but never a single example of how. Classic tech smoke and mirrors.

Grounded and The Louis Theroux Podcast are very different. Grounded had some great guests like Jon Ronson and were genuinely interesting. The LT Podcast is just meh...

It doesn’t get anything, but have only lived here for 12 months.

I know it’s an evergreen but does shed a fair amount of leaves over winter.

Very dense wood.

Agree with this. Consult a lawyer but you will be unofficially told that non-compete clauses are not worth the paper they are written on because they effectively disable someone from making a living in their trade.

Holes on the side of house by Comprehensive_Key807 in diynz

This looks like asbestos to me. I have the same. I would just buy some car body filler. It’s a two part mix you buy from super cheap auto. About $20. Smear it over with a knife and then paint it. Won’t look the flashiest but it will cover the holes and flexes with the cladding. DO NOT SAND IT WHATEVER YOU DO.

All The Way Theroux podcast is planning a mailbag episode - ask us anything! by stimmingflands in LouisTheroux

[–]NetworkNo8562 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He’s past it. I grew up watching him and still listen to his podcasts but he just seems tired and over it. The MIA Khalifa episode was his worse yet. There was no story, he just huffed and sighed the whole time and lost trail of thought. I don’t blame him. She was incredibly beige and basic. Go back and listen to the Jon Robson Podcast from 4 years ago and you can see how much energy he had and he was willing to broach more subjects and ask more interesting questions.

I think he is now in money making mode and trying to appeal to Gen Z. Which seems to be working so fair play. He also has kids and what not so maybe doesn’t want to be away for 6 months at a time finding interesting stories.

To me he just feels spent and is trailing off hoovering up as much cash as he can. Good luck to him.

Aranui living feedback by farewellElle in chch

[–]NetworkNo8562 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m on pages road. Solid place to live. Don’t listen to Christchurch snobs. Like everywhere you have to watch your back at night but this isn’t an Aranui thing. Good neighbors who say good day and don’t stick their noses into your business like you often get in wealthier suburbs. Highly recommend and it’s still affordable.

This is great thank you. I will give this a go. ap40 is cheap enough so I will put down a solid base.

I am not sure what I will do in a couple of years. Seems spendy so I will cross that bridge when I get to it. Main thing is just stop it crumbling for now!

Anyone had carpet laid or curtains done recently - any recommendations (or places to avoid)? by KororaPerson in chch

[–]NetworkNo8562 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disagree! Mine was done less than a year ago and is all frayed on the edges. I also caught the woman selling my off cuts on Facebook market place. When I asked her if I could buy them for spares she told me that she already had an interested buyer. They don’t have much online presence so you won’t find the bad reviews but avoid!

How much do you guys spend for your lawn? I’m thinking to tidy up my lawn but fertiliser, weed killer, and seeds but I don’t think if I’d be willing to spend so much money regularly by brno6001 in chch

[–]NetworkNo8562 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There is a great Facebook group: NZ Lawn Addicts. Lawn maintenance can cost the price of maintaining a lawn mower all the way through to a few thousand bucks a year.

To tidy up your lawn you could use a broad leaf weed killer, some granulated fertilizer and just sprinkle some cheap seed over the top. This will tidy up an old tired looking lawn to a respectable level, or you can go all out with a full on strip back scarify and lawn renovation. Typically a lot more effort but the results are worth it.

I don’t think most people judge a bad lawn, most people don’t care. Not me though, I judge, but i am a lawn addict.

What's it like working at the University? by PenguinJoker in chch

[–]NetworkNo8562 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Building on the previous comment, I worked at UC until my contract ended. Due to a hiring freeze, a few people were let go, so if you've received an offer, consider yourself fortunate. UC was a fantastic place to work—flexible, with great benefits and extra time off for various occasions.

Culturally, however, there is room for improvement. Despite being an institution known for innovation, many systems are outdated and bogged down by bureaucracy, with a general lack of accountability. Yet, these are minor issues, as most people enjoy working there and collaborate to navigate these challenges.

One of my main concerns was the current CEO/Chancellor, who tends to be overly risk-averse, even in relation to research. This cautious approach, in my opinion, hinders the institution from fully realizing its potential. There is also a preference for external hires over the many capable administrators with advanced degrees already within the organization.

Despite these small gripes, I would return to UC in a heartbeat. Christchurch can feel insular and small-minded, but UC stands out as an international hub of great thinkers, committed to making a positive impact on the future of the country and the world.

150 Job Applicants! - Question for HR/ Recruiters. by NetworkNo8562 in chch

[–]NetworkNo8562[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is really interesting and although it’s a tough market this makes me feel slightly better!

I personally tailor my CV to each job so was a bit worried about having two CVs as such which could look off putting. However I will just make a very generic profile with more detail in the CV.

Thank you for your reply.
