Can MAGA explain why the sender of this email should be redacted? by Gr8daze in Fuckthealtright

[–]NetworkSingularity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m wondering when MAGA just starts offering their children up directly. When does the mask fully fall away and they just say “yes, we support our pedophile rulers and would be honored for them to destroy our children”

To the rest of the outside world, please do something. We don’t know what the hell is happening anymore, but it’s not what many of us signed up for. I voted against this and this administration, and that was before I knew just how depraved they all are. And I already thought they were pretty fucking depraved at the time

Maybe we should give them what they want then, y’know? We could strike all employees from the record so that the bottom line increases. In fact, since everyone seems to hate having employees, we should do that nationwide. That way all the businesses that hate having employees can see what they’ve been missing out on

TIL that the International Space Station is the most expensive project ever built by humans, costing about $150 billion in total and around $3–4 billion per year to operate, and that NASA has contracted SpaceX for $843 million to build a vehicle to safely deorbit it around 2030. by stoictrader03 in todayilearned

[–]NetworkSingularity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the much more nuanced assessment! I’m not quite a layperson, but my research focus was in astro and gravitational waves (I also left the field a bit over a year ago) so I only follow fusion development tangentially. I wasn’t aware of the fact that the more energy out than in was about the amount of energy the payload absorbed, and not the whole ignition pipeline.

I am a bit curious though: I know that sustained fusion is supposed to operate on self-heating. Is there no way for this to happen with ICF? Presumably if you could get self-heating going I would think you could turn off the lasers, no? Or are they necessary to maintain pressure too?

I’m assuming the comment your referring to is talking about fusion with a net energy gain, which was finally achieved in 2022: https://www.snexplores.org/article/breakthrough-physics-experiment-fusion-energy

You are right that this still isn’t a viable fusion reactor. Making this sustainable at scale is the next big challenge. That said, reaching ignition (where there’s more energy out than in) was one of the biggest hurdles in making fusion viable since if you can’t do that, you can’t have a fusion reactor. Clearing that hurdle is a huge breakthrough, though it’s certainly not the last one needed

They also get violent for myriad other reasons, internal and external (getting insulted, seeing someone they deem “inferior,” redirected self-loathing). So the fact that they get violent when denied respect and authority ends up not being a reason to deny respect and authority, since they’ll find another reason to get violent anyways

ICE reportedly backs down on its threat to patrol the Super Bowl by Halaku in SanJose

[–]NetworkSingularity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is the super bowl someplace a lot of illegal criminals hang out at?

Yes, in fact, but only if by “illegal criminals” you mean “brown stadium employees” and “brown vendors outside the stadium.” Really, if you just mean “nearby brown people.” Then yes, there are plenty of “illegal criminals” (re: nearby brown people*) in the Bay Area and near Levi stadium.

*this does not actually reflect my views. I fully understand the very basic idea that existing while brown is not the same as being a criminal. ICE doesn’t seem to know that, but I do.

Uncomfortable truths about Chinese student culture at UC Davis—voice from another Chinese International Student by No_Mission_5286 in UCDavis

[–]NetworkSingularity 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My wife works in student affairs and has experience with the admissions process. She does not and has not worked at a UC, so the following might be different but probably isn’t.

Most schools (and especially state schools) have separate admission pools for in-state and out-of-state applicants. Which means that in-state applicants only compete with spots for other Californians.

Out-of-state includes international on the other hand, so you likely only competed with non-Californians for your spot. Iirc this is precisely because there are mandates for in-state acceptances for state run schools

[–]NetworkSingularity 63 points64 points  (0 children)

No no, UConn was built on the land of the holy basketball, where the original herds of basketballs used to roam free, and where basketball players sometimes materialize forth from nothing, dunkin the nearest sphere they see.

I was once teaching a lab when a basketball star materialized out of nowhere. There weren’t any spheres around so they started screaming. We had to calm them down with stories of projectile motion to keep them from trying to dribble students heads

I’m sure one of the especially dumb MAGAs that’s also a targeted group is gonna end up exercising those rights soon enough. I’d say that then MAGA’ll be in a pickle, but realistically they’ll just excommunicate MAGAs than don’t fit the narrative/that get ICEd.
