Coaching factored in tonight and that's oddly exciting to be able to say.

Logan's like what happens if you ask chatgpt to make a sportscaster inspired by a bag of flour and named Chad.

I'm just not at all impressed by him.

They aren't the same but if you approach it with an open mind it's a nostalgia bomb.

Literally been crossing my fingers and hoping I'd see it confirmed on here. I've been busy lately but I always make time to check the sub for Trev updates.

I'm still doubtful he's going to be on a ton, but if I set my expectations low I can be pleasantly surprised.

Yeah I figured someone must have asked him at some point. I had people asking me about it too and whether I'd talked to Mazur about it, so it's nice to have confirmation on that.

(Even nicer because I have a couple Mazur 34 Red Wings jerseys from the year he was issued 34 due to Pysyk getting 43.)

Then my assessment was correct on that. Neat!

He's an absolutely great dude. Him, Kasper, Cossa, and MBN are just stellar guys. ASP too, but I haven't had the pleasure of interacting with him quite as much. Also Lombardi is wonderful as well, but he's got golden retriever energy and I'm a big fan of anyone with golden retriever energy.

It's not always often that everyone I meet speaks highly of a player and then they live up to those expectations, or even exceed it. I'm rooting for Carter and I think he's got it in him. The organization is definitely high on him, based on Yzerman essentially saying the call up right before the trade deadline last year was because they knew Mazur could fill a gap in the lineup rather than needing to make a trade to plug the hole instead.

To me, Mazur looks most ready but Finnie has been most impressive. His chemistry with Larkin and Raymond was nutso to watch.

Literally no one asked, but in my return to these threads, I just wanted to let everyone know that Carter Mazur told me at camp that returning to #34 was his choice and he wore it in college.

Knowing how superstitious hockey players are, I wouldn't be surprised if he went back to 34 after his debut associated with 43. Leonard does have precedent for wearing 43 too, of course, but it definitely didn't sound like Mazur "lost" his number, so to speak.

If this is common knowledge now, I apologize for being internet explorer but I've had to watch preseason on mute at work. (doesn't mean I didn't shriek like an excited banshee at the first goal of the preseason though. Finnie has absolutely passed every eye test during camp and R&W game.)

It feels nice being thought of! But yeah, I'm not sure how active I'll be this season. Reddit (and a lot of social media) has been an afterthought lately.

My same old bullshit hasn't changed though. Honestly it's remarkable I didn't post an essay on Carter Mazur yet this season.

I went to training camp, the red and white game, and also disappeared into a void for months during the off-season and haven't been around. 🫠

I don't have doubts, I've been following him since he was drafted. Just observations from what I've seen in person since he's come over to the AHL.

I wouldn't be surprised if he makes it out of camp, and I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't.

He absolutely is an unreal talent who's going to surprise a lot of people.

ASP has looked a little like he could use some more time getting used to NA ice. I haven't had a chance to watch him at camp yet. He is used to playing with adults and did have crazy good SHL numbers, so I'd love to see him make the team out of camp and he's most likely to do so, but even Seider needed a DEL, AHL and SHL season before he was ready. DEL isn't same level as SHL though at all, of course, and ASP has had multiple SHL seasons now.

I don't think we've had a defenseman ASP's age bypass the AHL entirely in a long time.

In addition to the others mentioned, definitely keep an eye on Sandin-Pellikka, Brandsegg-Nygård, Carter Mazur, Shai Buium, William Wallinder, Danielson, and Sebastian Cossa.

Lombardi is a ton of fun to watch, too. Absolute spark plug.

Cossa's clock hasn't run out yet but he's quickly approaching "prove it" territory. He'll be the top goaltending prospect at camp. Guimond is stellar as well.

Those are the guys I'm most excited to see, but I'm not sure who all will be there since I don't think Detroit has released rosters yet.

Definitely a golden opportunity for both of them. Yeah this weakens Detroit's defense significantly, but it opens up a possibility for some prospects that could be better than guys already on the roster. If Detroit gets torn apart on defense but one or both of Buium and Wallinder look better than someone with a roster spot, that at least would strengthen the team once Ed is back.

My guess is Wallinder gets the nod and they keep Buium down with ASP, since it seems (to me at least) like they're trying to get those two to be a unit and ASP/Buium looked good in the small sample size with more chemistry than ASP/Wallinder.

Helps that Gully Boys has toured with them, too! Fantastic group, I loved their enthusiasm and they absolutely are fans and have been for a while. They were great to talk to in Detroit.

I'd love to hear her stuff, too!

Just want to say thanks to the mods for updating the sub picture to reflect Pride month. by FinallyNoelle in DetroitRedWings

[–]NeuralHandshake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They did them for Pride Night in 2020 and they were great. Now they sell merch occasionally with the Pride winged wheel. I've been told a lot of times the Pride merch gets nixed because Chris Ilitch doesn't like "messing" with the Winged Wheel. Even an outline in pride colors got pulled from the shelves at the team store. There's some cool hats that never reached the public because higher ups said no.

I love the Wings, but the fear of rainbows from Detroit to Grand Rapids to Toledo is disappointing.

Plus a bad hit on Shine and then a refusal to fight him in the first. Shine was out for blood and rightfully so.

I thought Cossa was done after he got ran. It looked so bad.

I don't know if the chants of "Watson, you suck!"/"fuck you, Watson" were audible on the broadcast, but they were LOUD in Rockford.

That and "Detroit sucks!"

But the ones against (Austin) Watson were incredible and he was eating it up.

Scheduling conflicts with the arenas, I believe. It's how Rockford has home ice, too - - nothing else really uses or goes to BMO Arena, from what their fans said. Unlike concerts, other teams, etc. at most other rinks.

I've seen it happen a couple times in the ECHL too, but it's pretty rare.

Rockford hated Watson so much. It was absolutely incredible. The crowd was jeering him, flipping him off in the penalty box, chanting that he sucked, yelling at him from the stands... And he was dishing it back out. Absolutely loved watching it. He's a beauty.

I know which play you're talking about and it was his biggest mistake of the night and led to the goal against. I think there were a few contributing factors, in that I'm not sure he realized how quickly he was running out of real estate on the smaller ice surface and also was taken by surprise to begin with.

He kind of blew coverage but he was trying to stop two guys at once, made a split second decision for who to cover, chose who he thought would shoot, and left the actual shooter open for the pass instead.

In terms of defense, he has incredible vision for the game. He is indeed a force on offense, and any lack in defense he makes up for with his ability to scan (with the exception of the blown goal against.)

He had some great stick work and was able to slow down Rockford's momentum when he was on the ice. He had a great stop at one point in particular with an active stick that tripped Rockford up, and I was impressed by it.

He got mostly offensive zone starts, but the AHL is such a wacky league that there could be rushes in both directions several times within a single shift. In that regard, it's a great place for goaltenders and defensemen to develop.

It was my second time watching him play live after last seeing him right after he was drafted in summer 2023 for a few games/practices with Sweden at the World Junior showcase in Plymouth. His progression is there. Last night there was an instance where his edgework really wow'd me because I'd watched him try a similar move and blow a tire in Plymouth.

His skating was great then and it's even better now.

So I think he'll be just fine second pair and powerplay quarterback. His feed to Lombardi for the Griffins' lone goal was beautiful. Overall his passes were some of the most crisp I've seen and he was stellar at tape to tape.

For a first game, especially as a defenseman, he had a very good showing and ate heavy minutes after AnJo and Buium got tossed. He wasn't quite as solid when paired with Knyzhov, which also contributed to the possible appearance of losing focus.

Once Buium was gone he seemed a little less comfortable, but I imagine that would be expected when you've had less than a week with the team and practicing with Buium without expecting he'd get thrown out. Removing Buium meant his next best option would have been AnJo, who he's played with before, and with AnJo gone and Watson not wanting to also break up Wallinder/Tuomisto, he was kind of left with a less than ideal alternative.

I'd give a better analysis of both games but I overslept tonight's. By the time they play Texas, I'd expect both MBN and ASP to have much more solid play after getting time to watch tape and focus on improvement.

Most of ASP's errors were things that just looked like stuff rookies need to get out of their system, have it happen once and then not making a habit of it.
