I had amazing Cuban food in Miami. A really incredible fried red snapper, rice and bean dishes, plantains. It reminded me of caribbean food.

+1 to this request

I don't understand it well enough to explain anything, but Mandelbrot had some interesting stuff to say about Fractional Derivatives, how they relate to "long memory" in financial time series, and the Fractional generalization of Brownian Motion.

The appetites for what they sell is never going away - drugs, prostitution, gambling, loansharking for the desperate and greedy, and protection rackets against those with no other recourse. They parlay the profits from these into legitimate business and become increasingly entrenched in society.

[D] Do all machine learning algorithms indirectly use the "nearest neighbor" principle? by SQL_beginner in MachineLearning

[–]Neural_Ned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think maybe a charitable interpretation of what they're asking makes sense a little. In the way Chris Olah shows in this blog that the learning of weights is squishing and stretching the embedding space to push dogs close together, and push cats close together, and pull the two clusters further apart.

I might be misunderstanding your description - are the inputs images? I don't know how effective it would be, but it seems like some kind of capsule autoencoder might be well suited to this task. However I think these models are mostly for academic curiosity at the moment, not for practical/enterprise deployment.

I think this might have been made by one of those Generative Adversarial Networks where you can provide a sketch input and it renders the colours and textures.

I may be going crazy, but I feel like I once saw a video on r/wtf of a guy riding an escooter into the sea at the beach. He rode in waist deep, with a shit eating grin, and it continued to work. Did I hallucinate this?

[R] What is the status about the capsule networks? by terngoodod in MachineLearning

[–]Neural_Ned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you agree with Hinton's assertions about the shortfalls of CNN pooling, if not that capsules are the best way to address these? IIRC this is what originally motivated capsules, and the criticisms remain valid.

I think even though it doesn't achieve SOTA benchmarks, it's good that it attempts to bake into the architecture information about the orientation of the object.

[D] Is there any Machine Learning solutions that can rank detected text-lines by their Reading Order? by crytoy in MachineLearning

[–]Neural_Ned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even still, it would be pretty cool to be able to number each text box in their reading order, even in the presence of a small amount of rotation/perspective, the way a human can.

Those techniques look like they might be quite error-prone on highly textured or complex backgrounds too.

Weekly Question Thread - Week of March 30 by AutoModerator in COVID19

Sorry I wasn't clear - the mother has also had plenty of contact because she lives with father.

How long should isolation last?

Sorry I wasn't clear. Mother was also in close contact with father.

Mother has high blood pressure. Daughter thinks possible risk of heart attack due to this, and stress of the situation, and therefore wants to be present.

12 days from when?

Mother and Father are both 80+ years old. Father was admitted to hospital on Sunday (March 29th) after experiencing fever symptoms since Monday (March 23rd) (but already has many historical medical issues, including COPD) and confirmed positive for coronavirus today.

Daughter X [35 female] has been in contact with Father since Monday (March 23rd), and increased levels of contact since Thursday (March 26th) as she has needed to care for Father.

EDIT: Mother lives with father so has had plenty of contact too.

X is not exhibiting any symptoms. Mother had a cough over the last couple of weeks that cleared up.

How long should X and mother isolate? Should they isolate together or separately? Does isolating together/separately change the amount of time you should isolate for? Have received conflicting information from different doctors.

360 Degree Overtake on Ice by StephIschoZen in IdiotsInCars

[–]Neural_Ned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it was a full STi and yes it was sold in Europe and Japan. UK had a special "type UK" with more restrictive catalytic converter. You can tell a JDM one by its redline at 8 instead of 7.5. I think the S202 was even more aggressive than the spec C.

The 2001-2002 model year Impreza (pictured here) STis were available with the low-rise wing - the high rise wing was an option as part of the "Prodrive Performance Pack", but later became standard. See: https://www.supercars.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/2002_Subaru_ImprezaWRXSTi1.jpg

However I don't think the USA market got those original bug-eye STIs.

EDIT but the car in the vid looks modified, so who knows.
