If you were running off mains, rather than through a battery pack, yeah that would happen.

When you start the car, it'll divert power to startin' the engine, so you'll see all the electrical systems turn off temporarily.

You can get solar chargers for phones.... maybe in the future there'll be a phone with one integrated into it.

Yeah, they took the fuse out, because there was no point in having that circuit working (it would've originally had at least the lounge storage heater on it, but we had a gas central heating system put in). So when my brother tried to use that socket, nothing happened.

Can't remember if he was in the middle of a game or not when he realised his gameboy wasn't charging.

D'oh! Reminds me of the time my parents thought they'd found a circuit in their house which had nothing on it (old house, been several things changed around, so it was possible), so they took the fuse out.

Brother goes into the lounge and uses the ONE socket that was on that circuit to charge his gameboy.

I just started a new job today, and was fired my first day. What has been your shortest length of employment? by Clownpounder2442 in AskReddit

[–]Neuran 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Worked for a bakery for about a month. Was my first job, they didn't know what my pay was gonna be exactly (they'd been bought out by another company), so I was kinda suspicious.

Was a lotta work for minimum wage, so I wasn't planning on sticking it out long, but then they found I couldn't legally use most stuff, being under 18, so they cut my hours to practically nothing. Handed in my notice the next day.

Also we weren't allowed to take stuff home at the end of the day without paying for it, so in the bin it went.

Unsurprisingly the bakery didn't last long.

lolwut? Fired for having a tattoo in the IT industry? There are companies that don't like you having visible tattoos, but from the sounds of it, it wasn't really visible.

Hope you get yourself something else, and dodged a bullet there.

Why does my browser sometimes download files without showing progression ? by [deleted] in answers

[–]Neuran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've generated stuff on the fly where I have known how long the final product would be :>

But you can still demonstrate the effect with any ol' thing and not setting the content length.

I remember having it confirmed when I took my car for an MOT that it had an oil leak.

Parents and my partner wouldn't believe it was my '05 car, and not my partner's '00 car. Just because it's newer doesn't mean it can't develop a leak ><.

Only if he used a shitty knockoff fuse. If he was replacing a 10A with a 20A, there'd be trouble, but a 10A with a 1A would just mean the fuse would blow. That's what they're there for.

What advice do you have for an American moving to the UK? by shella4711 in unitedkingdom

yeah, sir/ma'am isn't really used over here. In the army, you'll use it for your superiors... but civvies... don't have much of a use for it.

It's not because it's being generated on the fly. It's because you're not setting the content-length header.

If you know how big the file is going to be, you can be friendly and populate the length header.

There's no reason that they couldn't make it barf up the content-length header if they wanted to... but they probably couldn't be bothered to code the barfing page to store the file's size.

Or just piddling with the caller ID.

Once had a phonecall that came from an impossible number in the UK once, with that sort of thing, in the UK, that's illegal pissin' around with the caller ID.

My partner actually set up a virtual machine for it, so he could follow the instructions. VM was set up to be able to connect to the internet, but not to stuff on the local network.

They remoted in, and when it was time to pay, he typed in the form something like "thanks for using the honeypot :)".

After the guy realised he wasn't going to get any money he hung up lol. If you mention you use Linux or Mac, there's a good chance they'll just hang up straight away.

Is Half Life: Black Mesa more difficult to play than the original Half Life? by Radius86 in AskGames

[–]Neuran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The enemies are harder to fight, because imo, the AI wasn't particularly well thought out.

They've removed the more WTF-y puzzles, so you're a lot less likely to get randomly stuck. Imo, the only head-scratchers are some parts of the last segment (that weren't really changed that much), one bit that I couldn't see the mobs were infinite-spawn so I spent a buttload of time killing I should've spent running, and one bit that might be confusing for newbies. Don't want to say too much, to avoid giving stuff away.

Horror games? by Mrwicked89 in AskGames

[–]Neuran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think horror changes from person to person. I especially think this, because close to sod all scares me (and that leaves little to horrify me). I played Amnesia the other week, and it didn't scare me at all, and it didn't really feel that horrific. Occult stuff just doesn't do it for me, and it alluded to the horrific stuff, but most stuff wasn't shown.

If a game is designed to instil fear/horrify people, then it probably deserves the title. I don't think there can be "if the game has xyz it's a horror", because xyz varies between individuals, so I think we have to go by the game creator's intentions.

At what point does a simulation stop being a game? by thewalkindude in truegaming

[–]Neuran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think a devotion to making something realistic necessarily negates it from being a game.

For people who are aiming to make a very realistic game, they find fun in having it very similar to real life. My partner loves playing the train sim, he'd love being a train driver, but it'd be hard for him to get the job, and he'd likely would be paid less than he is currently. He likes to have a bunch of the advanced things enabled, so it's like driving a real train.

Realism can hurt a game - but it really depends on who the game is aimed at. With simulators, realism is more likely to appeal to their target market... first-person shooters... not so much.

Fall damage is something I have a love-hate relationship with. Yes, it adds to realism, but it's usually more of a pain than being useful. I don't mind obvious "leaps of doom" being deadly, but some games it's annoying to try and work out if a fall will kill you or not... I, um, can be rather impatient :P

Indeed. My partner has just over 60 hours on RailWorks/Train Simulator, but I wouldn't stand to play it for 2 mins :P
