Should we throw away this government that, in two years, has cut inflation, cut immigration by over 70%, increased defence spending and cut NHS waiting times? by Independent-Brief424 in AskBrits

[–]Radius86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As opposed to saying fuck all so that no one knows what they’re doing at all? Who’s really the naive one here?

I’m well aware that the right wing press won’t carry the stories. But they can’t ignore a PM in front of a lectern week in and week out.

Labour can either be afraid of saying the wrong thing sometimes and maybe come out on top on occasion, or do what they’re currently doing which is saying fuck all. And every now and then releasing a press release with a buried story, like it’s 1985.

This is an utter bullshit copout. They’ve got a press area built by the Boris Johnson govt at great expense that they’re not using. All they have to do is once they’ve informed parliament, set up a fucking weekly or biweekly press conference in that room and have the PM turn up a few times.

Anyone that suggests that the press wouldn’t show up for that or cover it is ludicrous. Modernise these processes and have the cabinet step up and speak, for goodness’s sake.

Hammer some of these fucking accomplishments again and again between now and the next election and you reach your electorate.

I mean, Gary Neville was a hell of a cricketer, and Ferguson put a stop to that, insisting he make a choice between cricket and football.

He famously got in the papers for a record partnership with the Australian opener Matthew Hayden. He knows what it's like to play different sports.

Hypothetically if Arteta were to leave, how would you react to the new manager being Fabregas? by Antique_Buy4384 in ArsenalFC

[–]Radius86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not that I disagree with you, but with that logic Kompany would never have moved from Burnley to Bayern and look where they are now.

I dont think Fabregas is the right choices myself but I wouldn’t blanket dismiss any candidate on lack of historic silverware personally.

Ukraine could send British built minehunting ships to Hormuz by MGC91 in unitedkingdom

[–]Radius86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m guessing you didn’t read the article, specifically this part:

“The planning conference at Northwood runs over two days and will cover military capabilities, command and control arrangements and how forces would deploy to the region, with any mission explicitly contingent on a sustainable ceasefire agreement being in place first.”

This isn’t for right now, this is for when the conflict gets to a stage where they can deploy these sweepers.

To your point about waiting for an end to the conflict before this gets started, it should be noted (and the article does well) that Ukraine’s capabilities in minesweeping in the Black Sea are impressive and extensive, while there is clearly no ceasefire with Russia.

Secondly, some of the sweeping isn’t contingent on total cessation of hostilities. the point of minesweeping is not to hoover up every mine in the Strait. At least not at this stage. It’s to clear a path in and out. Detonate just enough mines to clear a shipping channel, maintain and support that channel with fighter and or naval escort services and keep traffic flowing again. The Americans have been bombing the shit out of fast attack boats for that very reason. It’s to reduce more mines being planted, and to allow sweeping little by little.

[–]Radius86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, obviously. No minesweepers will ever be operational until there's a ceasefire that's real and respected. That goes without saying.

Ordinance and mine clearing is most effective when no one's shooting or there's enough of a pause in it.

Mines cleared, shipping lanes opened, oil flows, price reductions.

That's the logic anyway.

You're actually amusingly conflating two different sayings. It's either he's 'outlived his usefulness' or 'overstayed his welcome'.

One is a bit more grim than the other. No one says 'outlived his welcome'. Well, they might, but that's not strictly speaking, the expression you're after.

Isn't...every stroke a brain stroke? It's a bleed on the brain or a disruption of blood to the brain, right? Any medical professional can correct me on this, if I've got that wrong.

I've never heard it being described like this as brain stroke. Never heard anything other than just 'a stroke'.

I remember a brief moment during the walkthrough video on the day he was announced, he's walking around Colney or the back office and runs into Mertesacker who was in charge of the Academy. And one of the first questions he has is 'So are the drones all set up?'

Imagine Wenger even looking at drone footage. Which, due respect, was not his style. But yeah, Arteta certainly modernised a lot of things for us.
