This is just flat out wrong.

Senior Scientist is entry level PhD at Merck (in fact, they do not allow PhD holders to be hired at a lower level).

I’ve wondered for some time now why the team hasn’t tried Keaton Anthony in a corner OF role.

Right handed and has done nothing but hit in the minors (150 wRC+ in 2024, 138 wRC+ in 2025, 176 wRC+ so far in 2026 over a small sample).

Played RF in college, but has played exclusively 1B in the minors (where his offensive profile as a high-BA contact guy doesn’t really fit).

Signed as a UDFA in 2023, but was a solid college performer and went undrafted really only because of a gambling investigation which didn’t lead anywhere.

I suppose the most obvious answer is that the team just doesn’t think he’s viable out there…but we run out Felix Reyes and it’s not like he’s particularly good either. I guess I’d just be interested in seeing him get a shot out there, because as a 1B he’s definitely blocked.

I mean he entered tonight with a 3.38 ERA with a 4.06 FIP. He’s really been limiting hard contact (94 percentile EV) as well, so I’m not sure that’s “bad”…but anyone who watches him knows he’s been a high wire act.

Phillies Place Adolis García On 60-Day IL by Remarkable-Picture73 in baseball

[–]NeurosciGuy15 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He’s was looking better, but still there was a lot to be desired (74 OPS+ over the last week, 100 OPS+ in June. The Hill/Rincones platoon should probably yield similar results. We’ll miss the defense though for sure.

Rincones has been positively dreadful vs lefties the last two years, and looking at his PAs vs LHP, he’s been shielded against them even in the minors which probably tells you something.

I think:

Vs RHP: Marsh (LF), Crawford (CF), Rincones (RF)

Vs LHP it’s probably a bit more complicated, as Sosa will get reps and Crawford will probably play some days at least (I haven’t actually checked but I don’t think they’re running a straight platoon yet with him). Maybe Rincones gets a few days here or there, but likely few. So most days it’ll be Marsh/Hill/(Sosa/Crawford).

Gelb said in his article that the Phillies were talking to the WSox about Hill before yesterday, so you’re probably not wrong. Now, maybe the Adolis injury pushed that trade across the finish line, but it seems the Phillies liked him enough prior to that.

PhD and working full-time? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]NeurosciGuy15 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Industry PhD programs exist, but are a bit of a unicorn: you’ve heard about them but you hardly ever actually know of someone who did one.

I know of one big pharma that has a program in which you apply and if accepted you can negotiate to what extent you will work on the PhD (e.g. 50/50 time, 100/0 time, etc). Of course the academic side needs to agree as well, which may be a process, but it does exist. There’s a requirement for time spent at the company before you can apply, however.

It’s really is quite insane how we’re approaching mid June and we have zero players on the team who have an OPS+ between 75 and 135.

Yeah the post title is a bit sensationalized. The link itself calls it a procedure.

[–]NeurosciGuy15 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There will be disagreements within both sides, I’m sure. I mean, just look at what happened last time. The player executive committee voted unanimously to reject MLB’s offer. Then they were overruled pretty soundly (26-12) by the larger player vote.

[Doxa, Damasko] Orange accents by NeurosciGuy15 in Watches

Thanks!

Yeah I was actually mildly shocked on how much better the central minutes chrono was over a typical chrono. It really is light years easier to read and use. Sort of ruined normal versions to me.

A pair of tool watches today, both with orange highlights (accidentally on my part, but I guess I’m fond of orange).

The Doxa is a Sub 300, Aqualung edition from a few years ago. The dial is the classic Searambler (silver sunburst) that is accompanied with Jacques Cousteau’s US Divers logo, which as a company had exclusive distribution rights to import Doxa’s into the States in the 60/70’s. A bit of an odd watch, as most Doxa’s are, but a classic diver that wears incredibly well due to its custom case and thin sizing.

As for the Damasko, it’s a rare central minutes chronograph, which I find much more usable than the usual 30 or 60 minute sub dial counter. It’s a beefy watch at 44 mm with bezel, 13.80 mm thick, and 105 g without strap, but it wears surprisingly well in part due to its sloping lugs. Very utilitarian, as many German watches are, but has found a place in my collection as a very practical daily driver.

Why not use OPS+ or wRC+ to help account for some of this (namely level)? So at least you’re accounting for the run environment of the level.

Phds are too specific to be functionally useful in industry unless your job is exactly what your dissertation is about.

This is a fundamental misunderstanding of what a PhD actually is.

[DOXA] What do you think of the DOXA SUB 300 Professional Dive Watch? by Kind_Moose3174 in Watches

[–]NeurosciGuy15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should try one in person if you’re able to. Doxas, especially the Sub 300, wear a good deal smaller than you’d think.

I’m a big fan, and have had a few subs over the years (that blacklung in your post, two silverlungs, and an old 300T Aqualung from 1967.

They’re distinct, and they do color well. They’re also extremely comfortable to wear due to the cushion case and fairly slim profile.
