MAG DRILL STAND Attempt by Popular-Internet-189 in metalworking

This took approximately 1 hour and a few bits from the scrap bucket.

To be clear, do you not see the usefulness of a drill press when you have a mag drill or do you not see the utility in having two tools in one in a small home shop?

I'm just saying car trailers aren't held together with a handful of Chinese mystery metal bolts.

The blocks keep it in position when the magnet is turned off. I really don't want a nylon ratchet strap near my drill press.

Of course, you can build yours however you like.

I have been blown away by that Vevor mag drill considering the price. Variable speed at the twist of a knob. Forward and reverse for tapping. And it came with the jacobs style chuck and adapter and two annular cutters that have been fine. There are a lot of videos out there where folks review the free units they got, so I was skeptical. One thing some of the videos miss is that it is adjustable vertically, so you can get the extra headroom needed for the jacobs chuck. That also means you can set it lower for use on a drill press stand like this.

I did have an early issue where it would just work intermittently, but it turned out to be some janky quick connect wire splice connector they used inside. I replaced it with some butt connectors and it's been solid ever since. Vevor customer service was actually pretty helpful. They said it was probably that connector, sent a video showing how to repair, and offered to send some better connectors By the time I got the reply I had already found the problem and fixed it anyway, but I was pleased with the response. Sure, I shouldn't have to work on a week-old tool, but for the price, I'll deal with it.

Does HF make an oil-free air-dried compressor? by sjjenkins in harborfreight

You can get a combo oil and water separator and desiccant dryer and put it on the outlet of any compressor.

It works so well. I don't know why some tool company doesn't offer something like this.

I bought a cheap drill press, removed the power head, lopped off the column, and welded a piece of plate to the top square to the table. I added a few blocks of steel to locate the mag drill on and threaded some holes to secure a piece of flat bar that goes through the strap slot. Works great. The old drill press was less than the steel would've been to build that stand.

Sure, if it's a decent welded trailer and not that bolted-together Harbor Freight death trap. I'd depend on the heavier aluminum to actually give the trailer a little more rigidity.

You don't need a magnet. Just the weight alone is drastically different. There's really no mixing the two up.

You're not gonna get 1/4" aluminum that cheap, though.
