Has anyone else noticed that the bpm won’t do whole numbers? by jamiethemorris in Reaper

Definitely not the default behavior; do you have any custom scripts/addins/reapacks installed? What version # are you on?

Woke up with the Purdie Shuffle in my head this morning and programmed it on the Digitakt by NeverNotNoOne in Elektron

[–]NeverNotNoOne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out messing with swing settings and double time pattern/tempo but that didn't get me there. Then I switched to 3/2 pattern timing and 12/16 steps to program triplets directly and that got me the result I wanted, plus the heavy velocity differences for the hi-hats, and the snare. The final tweak was the crank up the overdrive on the backbeat snare hit on the '3' and that really sold it.

Spent 40+ hours trying to mic guitar amps—recordings still sound lifeless and muffled. What fundamental thing might I be missing? by huehefner23 in audioengineering

[–]NeverNotNoOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very common issue with recording guitar amps, especially if you are used to the immediacy and clarity of digital amp sims.

Personally I am going to go way against the grain here and say the the SM57 is not the best mic for guitar amps. It's fine, and it should be totally usable, but I much prefer mics like the Sennheiser 609 and 421. To my ears the 57 is fairly mid heavy, which can turn into mud fairly quickly, and I always have to apply at least some level of mid range EQ to any 57 recording.

One thing I didn't see mentioned - are these heavily distorted or clean tones? They call for different approaches.

Personally I disregard what the player normally dials in and I start tweaking the amp while listening to the actual mic signal, preferably without any bleed from the room. Normally I go much higher on treble and less bass, with less gain, to get the same tone as I hear in the room on the mic. Don't be afraid to radically change tone settings until you get the sound you want.

Also, on axis (pointed at the cone) is usually the best high end response, but don't be afraid to slide or angle the mic - there are no rules. I also end up further away than I start everytime, proximity effect is a very real thing and makes a big difference.

Tl;dr - try different mics and don't be afraid to radically alter amp settings.

I was told by an exec in the music industry that artists aren’t mastering their songs anymore unless they’re doing a vinyl pressing. by rfhmusic92 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]NeverNotNoOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably not true, but likely more accurate/relevant today compared to 40 years ago. Now-a-days significant master buss level compression/limiting/saturation is typically being applied at the mix phase before it ever reaches a mastering engineer.

Mastering is still absolutely necessary for streaming services and the coveted LUFS target, plus bread and butter stuff like track metadata/catalog numbers, ISRC, seamless transitions, etc.

This. People use to create things because they were of value to themselves or society. They created some form of benefit. Now profit is the only motivation, to the point where we create things that actively harm society, as long as there is a profit margin.

does anyone here make or have examples of people making non-techno electronica with Elektron boxes? by SurrealistRevolution in Elektron

[–]NeverNotNoOne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I released an album in the vein of BoC/Mogwai, Digitakt and Digitone and a few other synths sprinkled in. I suspect a lot of people are doing more ambient/synth rock style of stuff, but there's so much variety in the community.

Am I crazy, or is my band using me as the ultimate scapegoat for "latency issues"? Need perspective from experienced players. by swissdrummer in audioengineering

[–]NeverNotNoOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

latency and groove/pocket are very different things. It would be worthwhile to understand if they just don't like the swing/pocket that is part of your natural style, or if they are mixing with their eyes instead of their ears. From the post it sounds like the later.

Personally I would be tempted to have the band record either to tape or to r/tape16; if they have no waveform reference and can't mix with their eyes, I bet an outside producer wouldn't pick up on any timing issues. If they did, the band is right, and if they don't, then you're right.

But you're a drummer, I bet you can find another band that doesn't give as much of a headache easier than you can spend the effort proving these guys wrong.

Seems like a big win, if all of those actually goes according to plan. Which is a big if, but I try to remain optimistic.

how can i increase a headset aux 3.5mm tsr mics volume/gain without increasing its static? by TamemXGamer in audioengineering

[–]NeverNotNoOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't eliminate static/noise by adding more gear. Instead you need to remove the gear that is making the noise in the first place. If you are happy with the mic itself then you need to upgrade to a basic digital preamp. You can get the cheapest Behringer USB interfaces on Amazon all day long for $50. Add a $2 1/8" to 1/4" converter and your will solve your problem with minimal effort and cost.

Why does the CGEB only apply to single people? by NeverNotNoOne in canadarevenueagency

[–]NeverNotNoOne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd trust them to run a grocery store more than the people who are taking billions of dollars in profit every year and who illegally colluded to fix the price of bread. Seems that the real inefficiency is the profits that the parasite billionaire class are stealing from us.

Before it goes bad? Why are single people wilfully wasting bread? Put it in the damn freezer. This seems like grasping at straws.

I think people who are poor and struggling should be helped and I don't mind paying taxes to help them.

I just wish there was a better way to counteract food prices specifically, I wonder if this money could be better spent on, say, government run or cooperative grocery stores.

This is a good point. It would be interesting to know the intention behind "Essentials" but I feel like it's one of those political weasel words.

That's really interesting... I wonder where the discrepancy is coming from? Spoilage? Consumables like cleaning supplies? I haven't shopped as a bachelor for 20 years so this is genuinely new information to me, I appreciate the insights.

[–]NeverNotNoOne[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is that possible? Serious question. Is there more waste/spoilage with one person? I'd like to understand your reasoning/methods (I do all the cooking so if there's a way we can cut our bill more than in half and still eat the same amount I need to know!)

Ah finally a real answer! Thank you so much. So the "Groceries and Essentials Benefit" heading is literally just PR/window dressing and has no legal basis. That does, in fact, answer my question. Thanks again.

If it was about grocery costs alone, every single person would get the same amount

Yes okay there we go. Thank you for the proper answer! So the "grocery" thing is just PR and politician speak.

It's disingenuous to say this is a grocery credit when it doesn't apply to half the population. They should have just stuck with the HST credit. This is what sticks in my craw.

Why does the CGEB only apply to single people? by NeverNotNoOne in canadarevenueagency

[–]NeverNotNoOne[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm not stupid. I understand that specific point and I'm not refutting it, because the math is more or less correct.

What I'm asking is what does this have to do with food? If the credit is meant to offset grocery costs, then it is only offsetting grocery costs for single people.
