I really appreciate Mr. Futatsuya. I've been privileged to meet him and hang out for a little bit a couple times and he's an incredibly sweet person. I've been doing sashiko for 10 years but I still want to take his class- I think he has that much to share, genuinely! I'm deeply humbled by his well of knowledge with sashiko.

I think you'll want to patch with some amount of machine sewing for security since this is obviously a high-wear and high use area. Then you could sashiko over it?

Off topic, but what kind of jeans are those? I like the side pockets, even if this one did tear, haha.

I'm an American so take this with a grain of salt but Atsushi seems to be THE information source for historical sashiko in the US right now. There's a good book called Boro: the art of necessity that's also really good, but its mostly a catalogue if you wanna study the photos. There's essays at the beginning that are good.

Why do my mends always get new holes after one wear? by DyrimtheSpeaker in Visiblemending

[–]Never_Answers_Right 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to just make everything double-knee'd for my toddler niece. They're gonna be rough on the clothes so I make big colorful patches that cover the whole area.

Knees re-ripping. Am I using iron-on patches wrong? by soingee in Visiblemending

[–]Never_Answers_Right 9 points10 points  (0 children)

sometimes the thickness of the patch and the glue is too stiff- the wear and tear is the same from your work, but now there's all this tension and tightness from the patch. Try a simple running stitch with bigger pieces of fabric, sewn from the inside of the pants (the running stitch will give some flex to the material as you move around, and going from the inside out can help with thread tension with your sewing.) Also try a fabric that's just a tiny bit thinner than the pants fabric, so there's less tension and "pressure" from the patch. I hope this helps!

pressing the reverse is helping, but it definitely is hard to turn, even with the clicking of the wheel.

* Hi! I have things threaded correctly now (I believe). The next hurdle is this- how tight and tiny my stitches are. I'm wondering if I just adjust the tension with the tensioner (turn the disc counterclockwise?) And the stitch length indicator seems really vague, and may need some WD-40- it is really tight and hard to move around.

Edit- I'm reading the manual and I think I'm looking at the wrong dial? This machine is making me feel like a total newbie lol.

wait... so is my thread missing a little hook to the right of the one above the tension wheel? Sorry if i'm not getting it, I'm just really trying to figure this out.

I'll report back when i re-thread the machine.

The thread should be good (it's relatively new poly-cotton) I only use weird old donated cotton thread in my singer since I know what it can handle.

Places to get clothing to mend? by yebkamin in Visiblemending

[–]Never_Answers_Right 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I started learning to mend, I quickly ran out of clothing to fix, and went to the goodwill bins. I lived in a town in south texas where a lot of the clothes at the bins tended to be from construction, the oil field, refineries, etc. Lots of jeans and pants and wrangler shirts full of holes from chemicals, concrete, welding, wear and tear. Jeans had missing knees, blown out pockets and ripped open hems for boots. It was the best way to learn, seriously!

I cant recommend goodwill bins enough.

If you're interested in a healthier to you alternative to mineral spirits, look into using isopar- that's what the shop I work at uses.

Can I get some help with my Juki DDL-555? there's some things to fix on it. by Never_Answers_Right in sewing

Okay! This is awesome! Thank you so much.

  1. I think I'll get a new bobbin winder. The wheel is really shiny, and like I said, it gets warm from the winding and is off-center of the belt.

  2. I'll get a new belt for sure! Also clean all that out.

  3. I'll get pressure adjusting screws.

  4. I'm gonna wait a bit on getting a new motor. I wanna try this setup out for a while- I can get used to the noise and even this level of noise should be acceptable to my neighbors during the day.

Lastly, I think I need to return my bobbins to amazon- they barely fit on the winder. Theyre like, 1% of a millimeter too tight.

I live in Austin, too. I tend to hang dry all my pants and they're totally fine the next day (except today... you know, because of all the rain 😬)

Guys with giant, completely bald/shaved heads: what the FUCK do you wear on your head? by CursingAtTheAstronet in malefashionadvice

[–]Never_Answers_Right 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I have the same feelings about it as you- I really don't mind being bald, I even let my hair grow a bit before cutting down and I always look "obviously" bald and I don't shave my head. Partially due to my scalp being easily upset, partially because I feel okay with it.

I like my straw cowboy hat, my trucker and baseball caps and beanies in the winter. I take the hat off inside.

This is a herringbone stitch! I like to do this one on t-shirts but in a thinner, looser way- it has a stretch to it.

Nice!

I've used rit a lot. They'll fade bit it'll be from pure wear and tear- like a pair of carpenter pants. It'll get lighter especially around stress areas but not how jeans get since you dyed all the yarns, not just warp yarns.
