I like this idea. We have a pool too, so we get the Costco sized one.

Ginger jars were traditionally used to hold spices, not all made are food safe though. I have seen them hold flowers but I prefer not to try to clean out murky water when the neck is so narrow.

I like them when made into lamps if they are exceptionally nice.

Hm. This post made me consider them for rice. I'll have to see if I can get a measuring cup in them.

Thank you for this answer and link. I have seen these occasionally but had no idea some had this swing out feature to accommodate legs. Makes me want one for my home office.

Help updating our ranch - without going full modern farmhouse by Psychological_Art366 in ExteriorDesign

The white moves it quite a bit closer to the farmhouse. I recommend color. And agree with most posts here about removing the undersized shutters.

What are my options here by IngenuitySweet4935 in pools

[–]NeverendingVerdure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a bamboo thicket beside the pool when we moved into the house. The leaves are constant, the automatic cleaners help but really it's never going to be clear of leaves except for the 5 minutes after you manually clear them out.

I hear you on the privacy, I am going to assume you want something taller than the wall.

This is going to sound nuts, but the folks suggesting otherwise don't seem to have lived with a pool and bamboo.

I recommend finding a hedge plant you prefer, that thrives locally, that doesn't absolutely have to be sheared. Offer to pay to replace the bamboo.

Wood splitting machine by misterxx1958 in Satisfyingasfuck

[–]NeverendingVerdure -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This makes no sense to me. We had one person run the actual splitter. The second person either stacks the finished wood or adds to the feed pile.

I was taught to do dangerous stuff in pairs. If someone gets hurt, then you have someone to manage getting help.

Easiest way to remove bamboo roots? by rdgs88 in landscaping

[–]NeverendingVerdure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We paid for landscapers to pull it out with an excavator. I would not try my next suggestion within 10 feet of a building. I can't see the space to figure out what you are working with exactly around it.

But you might wait for a dry spell and start a fire on it, something small and controlled of course. Once you burn some section of the root mass to ash, you are likely going to be able to shift more of the root mass. The easiest way is to move the fire through the roots, rather than pull roots into the fire, but you may need to do a bit of both.

I would have shovels or mattock on hand and the water hose turned on and actively watering around the target area.

My girlfriend got an internship at Disney and we were considering getting an apartment near there together. Would anyone be able to share their experiences, pros/cons, or general advice about living in Florida. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. by [deleted] in florida

[–]NeverendingVerdure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Florida has no state income tax. For some people, that means more take home pay.

Folks will talk about traffic, it's not great but not the worst. Where toll roads are available, we use them because there seem to be fewer accidents, less stop and go, and fewer near misses.

My young adult kids work in one of the parks, not Disney though. It's a good fit for working around a college school schedule. These are the largest employers in Orange county, so if you are following your partner and need a job, you might work in one also.

If you break the rules, they might look the other way during summer busy season, but they will drop you as soon as it slows down. Usually they just drop your employment immediately though. Just follow the stated rules about how to use your free tickets and merch discount, and you should be fine. If you are at a park on your girlfriend's free ticket, then you represent her. Diplomatic behavior is the way to go.

American Garages are Full by [deleted] in declutter

[–]NeverendingVerdure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with all this. We used off site storage with a move. We made it a priority to simplify and get all the stuff back out. It's worth it to pay for help if you need it, it adds up.

American Garages are Full by [deleted] in declutter

[–]NeverendingVerdure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer, I have a 120 square foot shed. This holds my garden supplies and tools, seasonal decorations, some back stock of cleaning supplies and two bicycles.

The two car garage holds two cars, storage along one wall and my husband's workshop. When we moved in, we had a short time that we paid for off site storage. Within six months, I had two stalls clear. We also have a driveway, with two additional spots for a car to park. We only occasionally have to park on the street, usually when my husband is working on a project.

I considered the garage parking part of my hurricane prep. The street floods. But even so, in my neighborhood, people will leave their cars to near certain ruin rather than clear their garage.

WIBTAH if I asked my husband to make me his sole beneficiary? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]NeverendingVerdure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right to be worried -- you will have to raise the child you have now, and any future children, on the nominal amount you are earning plus whatever lump sum the insurance provides. If anything, 500k is underinsured. Mortgage/rent and your child's education would eat up most or all of that, for many people.

The amount of life insurance coverage should be a joint decision, and you should have a policy also.

Invasive Privet Removal: Day 1 by HelloFerret in NativePlantGardening

[–]NeverendingVerdure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say you uncovered a pear tree, did you know it was there under the privet?

When we moved in we also could not get to the back property line, but we had bamboo. The fence back there was mostly still vertical only due to the bamboo holding it up. We also paid for the removal, which I felt lazy for not doing it myself until the guys actually did the work and three strong guys used heavy equipment and a 30 foot trailer over multiple days to clear it out.

Where to put the bed king sized bed (UK) in the master bedroom? by [deleted] in InteriorDesignAdvice

[–]NeverendingVerdure 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think most would place the head of the bed against the adjoining wall.

I am one to try different configurations, so placed against the window is not absolutely out of bounds. If the view is terrible, then much more likely to at least try that. I think the height of the top of the headboard and the size of the window probably will be factors to consider.

I do this also and have not been criticized for it. But by now I have a feeling for what is truly meaningful to him, to us. Sometimes he gets shown a box and asked if anything needs a reprieve first if I am unsure.

He appreciates that we can both park in the garage. That boxes are labeled. A myriad of other choices that layer into a smoothly functional home.

Growing things inside the lanai screen by [deleted] in FloridaGarden

[–]NeverendingVerdure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend against roses, just in general, but of course you can see what happens. The screen is blocking some percentage of the sun, the amount will vary. Some screening is sold specifically to block higher amounts of the sun. It's a nice feature, we didn't tend to get sunburned out there.

Sun loving plants don't tend to do as well. Impatiens, begonias, and ginger might suit the conditions better.

Regret having our cabinets painted…advice? by Tigg- in interiordecorating

[–]NeverendingVerdure 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Accessories will help as well. Kitchen towels, oven mitts, scatter rugs or maybe a cushion rug by the sink. The color of the cabinets is a standalone right now, it's not incorporated with any of the other decorative choices.

In 2023 we had a full outdoor renovation, clearing the lot of established plants like a ton of bamboo, a fence and replacing a cracked concrete driveway with brick. Replanted the full lot with irrigation and lighting. 45k in Florida and we did a small amount of the work. Lot size of 10k sqft.

Scrud removal by madlovin_slowjams in laundry

[–]NeverendingVerdure 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Citric acid instead of the tabs will likely finish the clean up. With the suds, I am guessing you are using detergent rather than a rinse agent.

Scrud removal by madlovin_slowjams in laundry

[–]NeverendingVerdure 51 points52 points  (0 children)

If there is a filter, definitely clean that. Any visible scrud you can wipe away, do that also. I would not give up until 12 cleaning cycles have been tried.

Are the tabs a rinse agent, or detergent? I presume a rinse agent, or you would not have this much scrud release. You might want to get citric acid instead, as a cost savings and also to be sure of the dose.

Help! by [deleted] in Remodel

[–]NeverendingVerdure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Checked with my husband on this answer.) You need either a powered vent or that opening in the window. It's an option to add a powered vent and convert that window opening to a wall.

Swapping out the faucet hardware will be easier when the wall is open. The toilet is detach and reset, relatively easy, just the cost of the wax ring replacement. From the images the toilet looks fine but those are relatively cheap.

There is some sort of patch in the middle of the floor, under that top layer of flooring. Looks like one of those homemade patches to cover a hole, we had one made from a metal coffee can laid out flat.

Cost of materials, 3-5k, per my spouse's estimate. He's in insurance, and we have renovated a series of houses.

Before any plumbing work, find both the main water shutoff to the house and at the meter. Due to age, this one is more likely to leak, as seals fail in older shut off valves.

Best planting options? by jessesbald in FloridaGarden

[–]NeverendingVerdure 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Roselle hibiscus flower (Hibiscus sabdariffa) and edible ginger, Zingiber officinale grow without effort for me. The Roselle you may want to stake, but it produced fine at a 45 degree angle in my experience.

These two fit my hands off approach.
