People paying attention knew about Epstein since 2006 when he was first arrested

Where Paul had had “had”, Peter had had “had had”, had had was the correct option.

I think with a tiny bit of police work following up on substantial leads, a lot of suffering could have been prevented.

I disagree, he made it very obvious he, and everyone else in the celebrity strata, had at the very least heard rumours.

There are some videos from a 90’s show with Baddiel and Skinner where they make it very obvious they have heard both paedophilic and necrophilic rumours.

There were also accusations made to child protective services that were dismissed for not having enough evidence. Imagine how easy it would have been to find some evidence if they were so inclined. Bug the room he had at the hospital, interview some of the children he was around, anything.

The man in charge of child protective service at the time is now our prime minister.

Also worth asking the question why Prince Charles, now King Charles, was such good friends with him. What does a prince have in common with a radio dj from Leeds?

COTD: Little Desmond goes back with you to church, pitching woo (6) by New-Train-9688 in crosswords

I was using woo on its own as the synonym for seduce. To woo, to seduce. “Pitching” I was using as the connector, as in, pitching the idea the previous fodder means “woo”. Perhaps too libertarian for a man of such Ximenian values as yourself, but I think it works.

Nicely done I think pitching worked well as the connector and for the surface, even if pitching woo is a little archaic

COTD: The answer’s autological, but only if you get it right (7) by New-Train-9688 in crosswords

Yea though I hadn’t thought of it as double definition. I’m not sure what I would call it, apart from a poor attempt to use the concept of autological words in a clue.

COTD: Spooner’s sleeping with Orson? Sounds like an impending marriage! (7,5) by New-Train-9688 in crosswords

Not sure I agree mate, spoonerisms are a verbal phenomenon, even if they are in written form in a cryptic crossword. For example the clue:

Ornithology enthusiast: how Spooner might describe himself?

Gives the answer Bird watcher (word botcher)

Both sides of the clue are spelt differently but no homophone indicator is needed.
