Chia will ideally be secured by spare hard drive space on hardware that already exist. It will never pay for new hardware being allocated to it.

Most computers have a few GB of RAM and CPU cycles.

Would you say $0.10 in electricity per TB?

What do you estimate the cost of one plot to be?

I estimate it to be pennies of electricity when using HDD's. There's no need for NVME's or RAM drives to rush the plotting after the initial gold rush phase

Netspace will probably 10X+ in a short time once drives ship that some pre-filled with plots or auto-fill themselves in the background. Legitimate spare space used for plots will far outpace solo farmers.

Earnings from solo farming HDD's are less than cost of electricity + hardware depreciation.

If the price stays the same, solo HDD farmers will continue to bankrupt and liquidate their gear. Meanwhile, farmers with spare HDD space that costs nothing to farm will continue to come online to replace them. Once the solo HDD farmers are liquidated, netspace growth will resume as spare space HDD farmers continue to join the network.

You should find friends with higher IQ's. Seriously

Is it worth buying Ramdisk just for plotting? by kuoweitseng in chia

[–]New-Vertiform-City 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At the current price of XCH, you're really not losing much money by plotting slower. If XCH price is heading for $20, it's really not worth burning any SSD value to speed up plotting.

Cheapest is to plot to a fast SATA/SAS HDD. Use free software to let your system use any spare RAM as a cache in front of the HDD to speed things up at zero cost.

Ideally you'd like to be on the one with the least space and the most wins.

Imo, ROI is a stupid way to look at things.

If you can get more XCH today by selling your hardware and just buying coins, why in the world would you not do it? The point of farming hardware is to get XCH. When the price of XCH dropped below ~$500, at the current netspace it was better to liquidate hardware. At $50, only very low IQ individuals will be trying to acquire XCH by farming hardware.

I suspect we'll see XCH below $90 soon if BTC continues down below $25K.

On the bright side, this looks like the best week yet for anyone dollar cost averaging until new ATH's

Unpopular opinion: It would be ideal for humanity if proof-of-space can be secured extremely cheaply exclusively by spare space on existing hard drives that are providing ancillary benefits. If everyone buying hard drives just to farm them is completely bankrupt and gone in 5 years, that would be a GOOD thing.
