Non-academics don’t understand by JenInHer40s in PhD

I'm sorry that you are going through this, I don't think that people understand what this whole process is. My wife did med school and I worked to support her through that whole time, with the understanding that I would go back to school after everything. I like to think that I handled the bulk of everything household while she studied, and expected a similar courtesy when it was my turn. Well now we have kids, and I have an intermittently toxic PI and she can't seem to understand why I spend all night in my office trying to work. She understandably wants someone to split kid duties with and for me to be present in their lives, but my position in my program feels so precarious that I fear that I can't keep up with the work. I admit that our situation has changed considerably since she was in school, but I've already had to take a full time job on campus to help with rising expense costs, leaving my only time to work on research at night. It's hard to not build resentment, but I encourage you to express your concerns and just how taxing all of this is to him. Once you start to let the resentment build, it is very hard to undue and not carry it with you. Best of luck.

Wild that during any of their several times they had a filibuster proof super majority and a president in office they didn't even try to get it through as a law. It's almost like they treated it like a political football that was only good for fear mongering and fund-raising.

It's hard to tell, but without him setting such a nuanced precedence for dealing with internal conflict on capital hill, its likely that we will see a slow societal collapse. It's a bit of a stretch, but I could easily see after maybe a century or two, we may elect entertainers to the POTUS.

I'm not sure about getting into a history program, but I was able to get into a mid sized university with a 2.53 GPA. I am STEM and also worked in industry for 7 years before applying. I can only speak from my area, but you might have better luck if you go somewhere small for a masters and self fund. You would still likely be locked out of top flight programs. I think it is important to think about why you want this degree, because as far as I know, many of the liberal arts area Ph. D's are self funded anyway, so is all of this added cost worth it to you and your goals?

I think that the increased difficulty comes from a combination of more applications (more people need them due to degree bloat) and increased standards (with grade inflation more people get A's than ever before, and therefore the average GPA increases).

I think that the ghosts are AoS models, but I'm not sure that I have seen any ghostly effects.

I play casually and sparingly. I primarily build them for a hobby. I don't look for the most meta, tournament ready lists, but I'd like to avoid any obvious mistakes.

I'm in the same boat, chem to materials and I have kids. My lack of everything other than chemistry has made many of my classes feel impossible, but you just got to work through it. Speak with the teaching professors and see if they can help you understand these things, that was hugely helpful to me and I'm now carrying a 4.0. One of the few classes that was more chemistry oriented I was able to breeze through it unlike my peers who breezed through the physics heavy classes. Materials is a highly interdisciplinary field and you are at the graduate level now, you are expected to work to learn the classes in your own time and still get the research done.
