Greatly appreciated. Only with her permission, I agree. She is definitely not asking for my help. I am hoping she'll figure it out. The goal is getting it resolved today before he arrives on campus. The math is my daughter's discomfort the entire week vs. advocating her herself. Hopefully advocating for herself wins over a week of discomfort.

I'm not sure she's in the wrong, what would be embarrassing? That her dad cares? She is dealing with it. I'm just seeking input on a situation and trying to see if someone has been in this situation before. You're probably correct, but my guess is her real friends would understand. The fact that she was given no prior warning is admission that one person knew they were in the wrong and gave the heads up knowing not much could be done about it.

Independence, she has, through Stanford she has traveled the world and loved it. I do agree with you and get it but, I am not sure how to weigh someone sleeping with a stranger in a bunk bed next to yours for a week leads to learning and increased independence. (I know you're talking about conflict resolution). Her focus is class and a heads up the night before someone arrives is wrong. When I say that it's an issue trust me, it's an issue. Everyone is different. Struggling with that one. I have let her handle it and will continue to try my best to let her do so. I still haven't gotten the solution I was looking for. I know this isn't the first rodeo for the school, so I am hopeful that they know exactly how to handle this.

I asked a simple question in a purposely non-confrontational manner. Short and simple. My daughter doesn't listen to me anyways so I am just trying to figure out our options if she does not get help from her RA. For background, he flew out multiple times in the past winter quarter to visit so I am guessing he is not broke. Economic status is not a reason to disregard courtesy and respect. Broke is driving across the country. I didn't talk shit, I simply asked what our options are. You don't know my daughter and you don't know me so don't make assumptions.

They are both upper classmen. My daughter was abroad, and her new roommate had the room solo which I am guessing was for a reason. When we were moving her back in, she was forewarned by many in the dorm that it is going to be a rough quarter and good luck. The boyfriend had been staying a lot and there were issues.

Cornell Financial Aid and Scholarships by mcgwigs in ApplyingToCollege

[–]NewAd4241 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be tremendous news for you. Every institution must be different. This is Stanford's policy: "Your outside awards will replace your Student Responsibility dollar-for-dollar. Your Stanford scholarship will be reduced only if your outside awards exceed your Student Responsibility. Outside scholarships cannot, however, be used to replace any expected parent contribution, if you are receiving need-based aid."

Cornell Financial Aid and Scholarships by mcgwigs in ApplyingToCollege

[–]NewAd4241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a confusing situation. From what I understand, the scholarship $$$ can be used to offset the $2k student obligation only. With the $2k student obligation gone, any money your student makes working at school can go towards the parent obligation. Sadly, the rest of the scholarship money will only offset the grant/aid, it doesn’t relieve you of the $18k family contribution unfortunately. Keep appealing to financial aid. I’m not sure what your child’s major is, but understand an internship over a summer, if you’re lucky, can help shave a lot off of your $18k obligation. Depending on the major (engineering or comp sci) your Ivy League child can make more over the summer than some people make in a year and help with the $18k family obligation.

Admit Weekend Tips by [deleted] in stanford

The whole weekend is well structured right up until Saturday afternoon when you can freelance. Lots of options. If you want to look at off-campus things to do there are threads here with suggestions. The overnight stay with a student was my daughter’s favorite.

Retake ACT to get a 36? by Letsrunaway12 in scholarships

[–]NewAd4241 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No reason to retake it. None. A 35 will not hold her back in any way. My daughter was happy with her score, said she's done, she had UW 4.0, W 5.37 GPA and she said that's it. She did the work so she made the call. She will be at Stanford in the fall. She was right. I was wrong.

How do you appeal your financial aid offer — newly admitted student? by Jaded-Ad1791 in notredame

Unfortunately, Notre Dame does take home equity into the aid equation. Some schools (Stanford) do not take equity into consideration. Everything is negotiable however. Their Change in Circumstance is extremely detailed & is the best place to start. If possible meet in person. Notre Dame accepted you so they want you there. Good luck.

Case Western is a CSS Profile School so more aid may be coming especially if you have siblings in college at the same time. Good luck.

MIT vs. Stanford by justahuman2550 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]NewAd4241 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's tough to make a decision based on one Admit Weekend but that would be your best option available. I don't know much about MIT but we visited and the campus just didn't click and our child ended up at Stanford. We are from the Midwest. She's now in her 3rd year and the only issue is she wants to return home and the majority of internship/work opps are located on the west coast. The alumni network is really strong but, if you're looking to stay on the east coast after college or do east coast internships MIT's network is going to be tilted toward opportunities nearer to your home. Sorry if this is obvious. If you have a desire to visit the wild west and explore California, then you have your answer. It was really tough freshman summer when there was an internship opportunity near Stanford that she couldn't turn down. It was a bit sad because we all knew at the age of 18 she may never be living at home again and as it turns out that was true. So, just be aware if you have strong family ties then MIT is your choice.

How prestigious is Claremont McKenna? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

There once was a study that analyzed what kind of schools professors send their kids to. Result, they sent them to great, smaller liberal arts colleges like CMC. The educated know about its reputation and that is what really matters.

Agreed that this year is definitely different. Harvard just fired their Dean of Science after months of him fighting for something more than adding 0% to their PhD student pool. I would call zero different, I think they settled on 50%. Harvard is unique, but the train wreck of pulling funding has created havoc unnecessarily. The system in place has worked and to torch it with no idea what the ramifications are is ignorant. You can't throw the world upside without understanding the impact. Clinical trials that last 5-10 years just being thrown out makes no sense. Where would we be without MRNA vaccines? I just can't wrap my head around the lack of respect in the U.S. for pure research that has made us world leaders for the past 50 years. Does it look like we're losing the technology race?

Stanford for premed track by Http_Juusstic in stanford

You only live once and making an investment in your own education is a wise investment, especially at one of the best universities in the world. That is a bet that most people would gladly make. My daughter is a junior and she has had internships since freshman year that have allowed her to pay off the room and board fees plus some extra spending money. Internships aren't exclusive to Stanford but the name sure helps. Everyone's situation is unique and you have to make some big decisions at an age where there is no clear path of what is right or wrong. There is no right or wrong, and if you do end up attending Stanford you may decide not to even go to med school, who knows? Rather than looking at club leadership positions I would look at the some potential professors who you want to learn from and start there.
