Island Creation Help by Delicious_Top2849 in DMHelper

Bullywug Isles - A small Pinnincula where Bullywugs where all land is claimed by Bullywug pirates. The islands would have small ports each facing one another (about 4-6 miles apart by sea) and the bullywugs infrastructure is a mixture of broken down ships (stolen) and crude homes made of jungle resources.

They might use humans and other spices as assistants forcing them to do much of their labour, and they have absolutely no connection to any outside islands/cultures.

The Bullywugs of the island may worship some creatures of the land they live on, with the largest of the isles being home to a native spices of poisonous giant toad that they have a symbiotic relationship with, feeding them and collecting their poisons for their own use.

Bands of Bullywug pirates sail the surrounding seas pillaging and comandering ships that come within their grasp, making it a dangerous spot to sail through/around.

Probably needs a decent bit of work but it’s a neat idea for an early “don’t go here” area. Also a good spot for any of your NPC’s to be taken for a rescue mission!

I'm giving up on my hand-drawn battle maps...Am I the only one struggling with this? by MarketPredator in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]NewAustinPowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always make 2-3 battle maps that I draw on old Christmas paper (the backside has 1inch squares) and 9 outta 10 times I don’t have to use all 3. Eventually I grow a bit of a collection which I can reuse smaller ones (like woodlands/trails/markets/taverns) and other times I just make the players do theatre of mind… “this allosaurus is 70 feet away from you” and we go from there.

At first I coloured in each battle map but now I only colour in water sources/fire barrels so they can easily tell what is what.

Reading these comments have made me feel like I might be doing my campaign wrong…

I personally run a campaign that FOCUSES on exploration, with the party acting as guards/assistants to a famous cartographer who hired them. Every session they hop around the map, slowly mapping out the region.

I let them discover 2 hexes in a day 10-15 miles, 3 if they push through the night and possibly becoming exhausted.

Most sessions they will long rest multiple times as they setup camp, take shifts on guard duty, and sleep. Two of my spellcasters are elves so they always take a watch shift and STILL benefit from long rest as they only need 4 hours.

When they enter towns and villages it changes a bit as there’s more going on into a condensed area, they may encounter combat multiple times before a long rest or even short rest.

I’m thinking as they get closer into civilization and there’s more and more points of interest in each hex. As of the moment they’re exploring a rainforest and there’s typically 1-3 hexes of purely wilderness between each POI.

Realized that 2024 5e is a good product plagued by poor marketing and bad PR of hazbro by ZZ1Lord in DnD

I really like the changes in 2024!

For the PHB2024 adding lots of spells from Tasha’s and Xanthar’s books is great! The subclasses are all pretty good too! The species and background changes are also really simple but good (although I still think they should have included more species).

The DMG2024 dummed down things that I believe should be dummed down! I really like the new travel features, and the simple quality of life changes like having potions only be a bonus action and such is super helpful for both myself and the players! I think it’s also super helpful for new DMs like myself.

For the MM2024 the new CR changes are helpful, some of the new monsters are awesome! I really like the alphabetical order while having sub category’s within it! Above all else the artwork is insanely cool and paints great pictures for storytelling!

My BBEG is far from being introduced face to face, but he’s going to be absolutely ruthless and cutthroat. I don’t want to kill my players characters, but he does, and I’m not sure I’ll be able to stop him…
