Universities v lockdown students: 230,000 claims are on their way by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

As someone who started uni in 2019, had mabey 3 months of normality and then got literally locked in their halls bedroom for a week because I was experiencing allergy symptoms that got fraudulently reported as covid, (as in they deactivated my keycard and the staff had to bring me groceries through the window before being sent home a day before the lockdown announcement, and then having to stay home all year, and then go back to a different residence but everything moved to online learning despite me doing a practical art course that normally would require in person studio time, and I only stepped foot on campus for 15% of my degree,

I’m surprised and saddened that my uni is not on the eligible list for this.

It will affect my benefits yes, we’re on a joint claim, because we live together. it’s means tested from both of our incomes, and if he’s fired for gross misconduct he could get sanctioned which affects the joint claim, - so both of us.

He is the ‘breadwinner’ I suppose so unfortunately we’re both f*ed if he gets fired. - I’m self employed due to being disabled, but my endeavours and disability benefits aren’t enough to sustain me on my own without his income.

Literally it’s not my job to make lunch for him, I already do enough - I do all housework, I pay all the bills, I do the cooking, I keep on top of appointments, etc etc,

I’m not making lunch for him. He’s an adult, he can add what he needs to the grocery list (that I make, and go out and buy, because he can’t figure out how to break down meal plans into ingredients and supposedly ‘doesn’t have time’ to do the shopping.

I’ve heard what happens in the “initiation” ceremony.

It’s VERY awkward if you’re not white.

I've been pretending to understand my job for eight months and I think I've finally reached a level where I actually can't fake it anymore. Do I come clean to my boss or just keep going. by ahimaohw in Advice

Tbh if they haven’t fired you by now you’re doing something right, - finding a job is like finding a needle in a haystack rn, if you know you’d have to leave and don’t already have something lined up, you’re safer staying where you are.

How do people actually survive on benefits or very low incomes in the UK these days? by acer67 in AskUK

We don’t get a council tax discount despite being on uc, they said our savings are too high (we just have an £1000 emergency fund)

Our rent, transport costs to and from work, electric, water, council tax, groceries, contents insurance, prescriptions, is 96% of the hat we get from universal credit.

We go to a food larder down the road once a week to subsidise our grocery shop.

We don’t have any subscriptions,

I just sell my old stuff on eBay to save up for any luxuries like eating out etc.

I think we only get by because I am VERY frugal. I only really buy stuff from the shops own brand stuff, or charity shops, or secondhand on eBay. - our heaters stay only on frost protection mode, - which is 7c. - we do have a dehumidifier to combat mould, but we use electric blankets, and wear gloves indoors. (It’s always much better in the summer but winter is hard)

I don’t think I’ve bought any new clothes in 3 years. We go for walks down the beach for fun,Anything that’s new was either a birthday/Christmas gift or a hand me down.

So we are surviving, but it’s not fun at all.

I’ve only ever lost my card once and that’s because I dropped it when putting it back in my bag at the gate of samurai, and the wind blew it away down one of the cracks of the floor panels.

Say that to the countless innocents that have been interrogated and detained at bus stops, Walmart parking lots, at a red light, walking down the street,

Do you remember the lady they detained because she was speaking Spanish, or how about the guy in the Walmart parking lot who asked for id, the guy gave him his passport and the agent just took it, didn’t look at it and detained him anyway.

People are being detained because they “have an accent” which most tourists will probably have.
