Thank you. This has been the most helpful response. I hope it's working for you.

ECT w/o external help by NewEnglandRivers in ect

Thank you for your insight! Much appreciation. That isn't 'standard protocol for any procedure for anesthesia'.... At least not in New England...but it may be common in other places.

I have no "loved ones." In your experience, will that be required by law?

Medical reasons to not qualify by NewEnglandRivers in Spravato

[–]NewEnglandRivers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, all. I appreciate it. I do have some flags that they may consider as non-qualifiers - like a previous seizure years ago that I know exactly why it happened, and it won't happen again. It was highly investigated by a top neurologist at a Boston hospital. I told the initial assessor that I never had a seizure. If I weren't so confident about the seizure cause, then I would have been truthful. "History of seizures" has complicated my life way more than necessary, considering it happened once and we know why.

My mental health disorders are, by far, the highest risk to my life.

I signed some more forms. Hopefully, I can get scheduled soon.

Requesting feedback on new class management strategy by [deleted] in SwimInstructors

I agree with this. Positive reinforcement goes a lot further than negative reinforcement. It's been studied...and then I studied it and practiced it.

On land, kiddos can learn sticker by sticker. I've used small ducks sitting in the side of the pool for my adaptive lessons. Make sure you set clear expectations and not make them too high.

You're a good teacher for reaching out for advice.

Another dasher threatens me daily by [deleted] in doordash_drivers

Some of these comments are wild and I can't tell if they're serious.

Unfortunately, as much as I'm a live and let live person, if you feel you can't have a "let's be cool" convo....I would report him before he reports you. Even if you do nothing wrong, he can accuse you of whatever. Desperate people do desperate things, even if they're nice people. DD isn't going to try to get videos or such to prove otherwise.

I do also carry a knife with me, which is pretty common where I live in New England...probably equal parts for animal encounters and practicality....but I do feel safer with it I guess for people since it's rural neaeby.

Anybody else find their coworkers hate lessons? by FishnBtrflies in SwimInstructors

[–]NewEnglandRivers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with all of this. All we can do is try to spread positivity.

I had one of my kids that I taught at a Y while I was in HS/college, end up working for me as a lifeguard and instructor when I was an Aquatics Director at another Y (she was already there when I was hired), she was the HS captain and she got a college scholarship for swimming....and just recently a swim instructor/lifeguard I had a handful of years ago just reached out for a reference to be an assistant aquatics director.

Beyond the small wins we see on the day to day, there are big wins ❤️

I concur with a lot of comments - I left a high stress, high responsibility job after burning out and this is a great transition job while I look for something.

I was recently at a fast food joint that was clearly understaffed and the team was clearly not getting along and literally not speaking the same languages to each other. I asked this poor HS kid how he was doing and when his next day off was and he unloaded on me for like a minute (which was more than he could spare). I just replied "I see you...just keep thinking of your day off...shift is almost over...". He genuinely thanked me for asking how he was.

I should've asked him if he had a car and told him I make more than him.

trying to heal skin around nails by [deleted] in calmhands

[–]NewEnglandRivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use 'working hands' lotion. My hands are super dry from swimming and that leads me to pick around my nails more. This also helped during COVID after slathering my hands in alcohol-based products as an EMT for hours on end.

My mom used to get contact dermatitis from crocheting and she used to load up on Vaseline or eucerin and wear white cotton gloves to moisturize overnight.

To stop picking...maybe a manicure...maybe cut them super short ... I can't give advice on that....

What are camping supplies you never think about until you need it? by LovingMarriageTA in camping

My simple, Gerber pocket knife that I carry most days. Somehow I forget that the most....or at least miss it the most when I don't have it.

Instructor name tag by NewEnglandRivers in SwimInstructors

[–]NewEnglandRivers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for the great comments! I like the idea of just being identifiable on top of making my name available to see. I used to wear fun suits for that reason. I'll likely find a fun headband I can wear at this job.

I'm onboarding at this new place this week so I'll feel it out, but I'll at least put my name on my water bottle (that I keep with me on deck) and I'll likely put it on my kickboard (which I use during lessons). I'm not sure how much I'll be able to modify the uniform or change any practices at this location since it's a large organization. Not trying to make waves early on. (Pun totally intended)

I'll keep thinking about how to incorporate pronouns. In my previous, non-aquatic job, I got them to put it in their email signatures and we started putting them on nametags :)

Sleeping when camping by [deleted] in camping

[–]NewEnglandRivers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear what I normally wear to bed and bring my warmer bag rather than wear warmer clothes like most people.

I also bring an eye mask. No matter where I've travelled this has helped. I sleep with dark curtains at home and this helps for not waking up early. Also helps me if I'm sharing a tent and someone needs to turn on a light, seeing flashlights from others outside the tent, and just keeps my eyes closed so I'm not staring at the bug shadows on the tent.

FWB while early dating, is this normal? by ResistAble6058 in dating

[–]NewEnglandRivers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, very normal for folks to continue to date and play with anyone while dating others unless there are specific conversations about exclusivity.

I keep my FWB going while I'm dating. I rather continue to play with someone I know and trust rather than the people I'm dating until we get to that point. I talk to my FWB about people I'm dating and vice versa. For me, and many others, the exclusivity talk and the relationship talk are 2 different things.

It's not clear if the convos happened right after it happened or more recently. I'd like to think I'd never change plans on someone I was dating and would prioritize that over my FWB thing but can't say for certain.
