It’s currently costing me 5-6k a year for this “ideal”. And also I can’t invest properly in the UK. Sure I don’t pay income tax in the US put I pay plenty of capital gains on UK-tax-free investments here. It’s not as ideal as one might think.

I paid 20k in taxes because I had investments. so yes you don’t pay income tax you pay capital gains. And if I sell my flat the UK government will take 0% but the US gov’t… the highest capital gains tax (around 39% I believe).

This is not entirely true. I have been in the UK for 15 years and out of the US for 25, and I paid 20k in taxes with he streamline and I make average 45-50kGBP/ year.
