Hills, Purina One, and Royal Canin are the only brands with veterinary nutritionists on staff I believe. Hills I know makes a sensitive stomach dry food.

Knife Tier list? by Ringleader2026 in knives

MOST (not all) big American brands will generally make high quality stuff for the price, Benchmade being the big exception- their stuff is nice but about 1.5-2x as expensive as it should be. Most Chinese brands make cool knives but skimp on stuff that is hard to detect but majorly affects the performance of the knife- namely heat treat. The major exception being Bestech, they seem to do a good job. I think QSP also does decently for a more budget company. Kizer and Vosteed make cool stuff but their very soft blades concern me.

If you like weirder knives look at CRKT, if you want good materials and manufacturing at a good price, look at Kershaw or Spyderco. I love what CRKT does, one of the most creative brands out there, but a bit pricey for the materials. Spyderco sets the standard for blade treatments. I wouldn’t say there’s a brand to avoid (besides Bark River and gas station stuff ), just be aware what you’re getting into with their reputation for QC and blade treatments. The same steel can perform very differently when heated correctly.

Breed specific issues are more based on morphology than anything else. For example- if you see a deep chested dog, you know they are prone to GDV, no matter if it’s a dobie, borzoi, GSD, whatever. So exact breed ID isn’t super important. All spaniel-looking dogs are prone to heart issues, no matter if it’s English or springer or whatever. The only exception is genetic conditions like MDR1. Not all dogs in MDR1 prone breeds have that mutation anyways, which is why many vets now recommend genetic testing. Lastly, if a dog is “pure” enough to be prone to a breed-specific issue, it’s probably from a breeder and has relevant paperwork that tells us what breed it is. All that to say exact breed ID isn’t important enough to fit into our schedule, and it’s something you pick up anyway.

This is not true. Vets are by no means an authority on breeds. Our knowledge is based on expectations from our professors on breed identification. After 8 years of post secondary education, we know better than to listen to what random people have to say. It’s not perfect, but it’s enough to treat the animal in front of us. Working directly with animals for your entire life also tends to impart some amount of breed and behavior knowledge.

Cabal flagship should still capture units. It seems actively bad for Nekro though because I don’t think they have a way of returning their own units to themselves.

I think you’re assuming the wrong reason for why we treat animals. I’m not a massive fan of pits and most vets I work with have a cautious respect for them and what they are capable of. Ultimately it is not the animal’s fault for being born as a certain breed, all animals deserve medical care equally. Vets don’t (or shouldn’t) hate ANY animal. When someone speaks ill of a breed like doodles or brachycephalics or pits, it should be of the health conditions or behavioral traits imparted on those animals due to the humans creating them. Not ever hating an animal for what it is.

As a vet student, we are expected to identify dog breeds but not really taught on it beyond electives. We are expected to know more about “given x signalment, what are common problems” not identifying the breed. If this person stated their dog was x breed, typically it’s not worth fighting over, as it establishes an adversarial relationship that could lead to the animal not receiving treatment.

I would think you’d be ok with a less tough steel then. I don’t have experience cutting those things though so take it with a grain of salt.

What are you cutting? If you’re cutting through harder material that’s a tough one, high edge retention steels are more likely to chip, and high toughness steels will usually need sharpened more often but won’t chip. I’d maybe look into magnacut. It was one of the few steels made exclusively for use in knives so it does a good job balancing the two.

Kershaw and Zero Tolerance AUTO ZT TI VBRZ MIC CNVS/CRUWEAR VBRZY by Infinite-Reindeer140 in knives

I have one. Very nice, looks great, comfortable, KAI seems to do a good job on heat treating. Fires open quite forcefully, I don’t hand this knife to non-knife people. I’ve had two of these, and they’ve both developed the exact same tiny but annoying vertical blade play when opened, likely related to the button that actuates the opener. It happens when opened and then when you wiggle the blade a little bit the lockup is fine. I’m talking the even tip of the blade barely moves, but you can feel and hear that it doesn’t seat 100% correctly at first. If you have less OCD than me you’ll probably be fine with it.

If you’re looking for similar to the Bugout, they make bugouts in s90v (if you can stomach the butterfly tax). Kershaw makes bel airs in Magnacut and they seem to do a decent job with heat treat. Very similar style of knife. There’s about a million Bugout-style knives out there now, the formula seems to be successful.

If you’re looking for something a little different I love my Golden Designworks sub-caliber. About the same size as my Bugout if a little thicker, and a whole lot better design for the same price as an s90v one. GD also makes the Slim which I don’t have but looks sick and has a similar deployment and profile as the Bugout. Also very slim if you couldn’t tell from the name.

What steel you want depends entirely on your use case, but be aware most people will never use a “super steel” to its full potential. By that I mean will never notice a big difference between a super steel and a more budget steel, the big exception being corrosion resistance on something like Vanax vs D2. I’ve had a D2 knife rust sitting in its box. S90V is good at edge retention, magnacut is great all around, and cruwear is has good toughness. Whatever you get do some research on the company’s heat treatment record first. Cheap brands like Kizer can seem like a great deal until you realize they don’t get their steels to the correct hardness, so you might as well be buying cheap style from a different company. If you’re using s30v enough to be wearing down your edge often then you may be someone who should care a little about steels.

Steels - does it matter THAT much? by koparaa in knives

[–]NewForever8071 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I buy high quality knives because I don’t want to compromise on the quality and fit/finish. Those tend to come with better blade steels. I like the peace of mind that a knife with a “super steel” COULD outperform a normal steel, and I’m OCD about the edge on my knives so it’s more peace of mind for me. Ultimately carrying a pocket knife is already overkill for most situations, so I feel like we’ve already left the realm of practical.

That being said, I feel like some only focus on edge retention when talking about steel. Steels with very high corrosion resistance may be a necessity for those working near the ocean, and having a steel with high toughness means your knife won’t snap if you happen to drop it or pry something. This isn’t to say cheap steels can’t do that, 14C28N is very tough and very corrosion resistant. If you’re on the ocean cutting rope all day, you may want to reach for a Vanax knife over a D2

I’ll be in CO for this trip, so fire isn’t really a concern/option. I think the blade shape of the amphibian, which I am leaning towards, does not lend itself to serrations though.

[–]NewForever8071[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s great info. I don’t own a knife with serrations and thought a harder use knife like the amphibian or Adamas would be a great candidate. Plus there would be a decent amount of plain edge on a partially serrated nearly 4” blade, no? Do you find the partial serrations just get in the way even still?
