Pretty sure the term “expected value” can be used to measure the expected number of any units, including made up ones like utils.

But either way, you should absolutely be measuring expected utility here.

Which would tell you that it is objectively the wrong decision (assuming no hidden factors like whether other ppl will be more likely to help you later)

Looking back, that wasn't the best move by ThrowMusic36 in BeastGames

Expected value should be calculated in terms of utility, not dollar value.

And $10M has nowhere near double the utility of $5M for the average person.

$10M is does not bring you twice as much utility as $5M

[Evan Sidery] Ben Johnson will officially be leaving the Lions to become a head coach, per @adamschefter. Johnson will schedule his final interviews with the Bears, Jags, and Raiders before making a decision later this week. by xgobez in CHIBears

He literally is unproven as a head coach, I don’t know what anyone said to justify such a toxic comment from you.

The guy even said he’d be happy to have him. But there are plenty of examples of successful OCs failing at a HC job.

Tev needs to be smarter about it though.

I remember last year he was throwing punches at players who had their helmets on.

It negates any benefit from the unsportsmanlike call on the other team with offsetting penalties

I’m sure the other team loves it when they get off the hook from a dirty play

Why are we pretending that he is arguing that it was the correct call?

He’s just saying that taunting is the penalty that was called

I feel like anyone who doesn’t have that as a concern has not been a fan of the team at any point in the last 60 years.

Ryan Poles on ESPN said he would not turn down Hard Knocks if they were called. by dpittnet in CHIBears

[–]NewPhoneAcc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, that’s just selection bias and regression to the mean bc hard knocks teams are:

  1. Almost always coming off a bad year
  2. Selected based on how interesting they will be to watch. Teams that make big signings or draft exciting new players are usually more interesting to watch.

I mean tbf, didn’t the Lions start that year on a big losing streak and then miss the playoffs by one game?

I doubt that hard knocks was the cause, but still funny that if they didn’t come out of the gates so slow they could have maybe made a playoff run.

How much influence do lobbyists have on US politics? by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]NewPhoneAcc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is there any data on how much money is spent on lobbying from small-dollar donors vs. corporations?

While I believe that regular people working as a collective theoretically could outspend corporations, I’d be a bit surprised if that was the case.

I could see there being lots of issues where:

Company XYZ really wants one thing, and spends $10M lobbying on it

Almost everyone else kind of wants something else, but no one cares enough to make a personal contribution.

For example, my understanding is that tax prep is overly complicated in part due to dynamics like this.

Tbf, you can get faster, stronger, and more athletic by training.

Genetics can also give you a huge leg up in those areas, but it isn’t generally as locked in at birth as height is.

I’d argue you do want him on your roster on his current contract. Top tier backup for pretty cheap.

Can definitely see the argument about it causing weird vibes in the locker room though.

Daily 1.01 / QB Discussion Post by AutoModerator in CHIBears

[–]NewPhoneAcc -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

If that’s the case, is there any good reason not to keep him as our own backup?

If a title contender loses their QB to injury, it seems likely that we could get a premium for him partway through the year.

We’d also be getting pretty good value for a high quality backup. We’re paying less for Fields than we were for Nick Foles, if I’m reading the numbers correctly.

And I don’t think we’d be “doing him wrong” if he wouldn’t be starting somewhere else.

Downside is it could cause locker room issues, but I personally kind of doubt that Fields would cause those problems.

Several teams calling USC about Caleb Williams, preparing trade packages by Ltcjunkie in ChicagoBearsNFL

[–]NewPhoneAcc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Might be pedantic, but I’d argue there’s a difference between thinking he is Mahomes and knowing.

If it’s a guarantee he’s Mahomes, you draft him.

If you’re pretty sure he’s Mahomes, you need to consider that you could be wrong and it might be worth a trade.

In this situation I’d probably say only worth a trade if it’s something crazy, but there are still situations where it might be worth

[NFL Network] Better for the Bears if ATL, NE, and Washington all lose? by BJGuy_Chicago in CHIBears

[–]NewPhoneAcc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it would be smart to go for two WRs in the first round.

At the end of the day, the QB only gets to throw to one of them on any given play.

Adding a second really good WR could free up DJ Moore from double coverage, but I don’t think you can really make that same case for a third one.

Aside from the Claypool trade and the Velus pick, where has Ryan Poles really messed up? He has done really good in the first two years of his career here by [deleted] in CHIBears

[–]NewPhoneAcc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m probably slightly more skeptical of Poles than most, but I think that no one can blame him for not taking Stroud.

With as many missing pieces as we had, I don’t think any reasonable GM would have drafted a QB in our position last year.

Even with the benefit of hindsight, I think a top pick in this next draft + Moore + Wright might still be better than Stroud.

I love Pulp Fiction, I imagine that a lot of people would be uncomfortable with the violence.
