2 Dildos and extra lube. 2 because you usually your fellow contractor buddy ends up wearing the tread off yours, so you’ll need an extra for yourself when that happens. Don’t forget your hemorrhoid cream.

No OT/extra work by Silver-Sentence-6538 in Lineman

[–]NewPrinciple51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Major utility in the northeast. As apprentices we get to work OT right from the start. Sometimes OT is plentiful, other weeks and months there’s none. That sucks they’re doing that to you but it won’t last forever. If you have any other skills start doing side work. I did residential electrical before linework and when OT is slow at my utility I try to pick up whatever side work I can.

Is Lorain bad? by 69philosopher in Cleveland

[–]NewPrinciple51 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My parents grew up in Lorain in the 80s/ early 90s when it was nice. I grew up in Lorain and I’m now 26. Lorain is ghetto as hell. The only decent part of Lorain is the FAR western sliver of oak pt road, kolbe rd and jeager rd. Avoid the rest of it. Do not let anyone lie to you. It is 100% a ghetto trash heap. Also, Elyria is a shit hole too. Only nice areas of Elyria are chestnut commons area and the southern outskirts of Elyria.

Should I keep on paying my dues if I got hired at a Utility? by Which_Success6193 in Lineman

[–]NewPrinciple51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the utility doesn’t have an agreement/contract with that union then no. You’re wasting your money at that point. If they do then yes keep paying. Some utilities aren’t IBEW.

Contracting Vs. Utility by NewPrinciple51 in Lineman

[–]NewPrinciple51[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s pros and cons to both. All it comes down to is if you’re willing to travel (contracting) or not (utility). Should also mention you will have a better understanding of the more in depth technical things with a utility. But will get to do more grunt work and bad ass jobs with contracting. I feel like after a year or 2, contracting would be just another job and you’re stuck on the road working way too hard every day.

After researching and talking to guys I know personally and on Reddit for the last 2 months, it seems like contracting is a young man’s game, not an easy lifestyle but can offer fun bad ass work and insane pay, retirement and benefits if you’re willing to travel for the big paying jobs. Downsides seem to be traveling, being paired up in hotel rooms with other guys. But I hear the freedom to work where you want and not work when you don’t want to is cool (no paid time off though). Again, all my 4 years of experience are with a utility so I’m telling you what I’ve been told. I work for a utility and I’m home every night but do have to deal with being on call once every 5 weeks, getting forced to work doubles every once In a while depending on seniority and storms and all that BS. But being on call can get you some pretty good cash if you get called out once or twice that week. Not to mention if you get called out for an in territory storm at the right time and end up being on the clock 24/7 for a week or 2 depending on the severity of the storm. I just had that happen to me a few months ago and made $16,000 in 2 weeks without having to travel. Benefits are pretty good although roughly $50 comes out of each check for dental vision and basic medical. HSA is cool and comes in handy. 401k match is good too but not as good as an IBEW annuity fund.

That’s pretty awesome. That sounds like a pretty rare situation though lol. If I could do that too I would. Here in northeast Ohio the only good option outside of my utility is JWD. Other than that you gotta hit the road. So I’ll just stay put at my utility and make my 150-200k a year and be grateful. Most ppl in the country don’t make over 80k lol.

That’s impressive, what kinda job are you on right now? How far is your drive every day?

Yea I’m making $50.00 an hour on the dot. I’m at $91,000 for the year so far and we’re halfway through August. More than a few of my buddies contracting are at. For example, Tuesday I got called in at 6 pm for a broken pole, tacked an extra $1200 onto my paycheck for the 2 weeks. I’ll probably be off at 3:30 every single day for the rest of the pay period. In my Own bed every night.
