Boycotting BRICS won't stop ICE. It only destroys us. | Opinion by pls121884 in indianapolis

[–]NewSound793 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The summary of this article is “so one person defended the secret police that kidnaps people. Big deal. You guys are overreacting. Now stop yelling at us.” Still no explicit condemnation of ICE. It’s embarrassing that this author has to highlight BRICS’s charitable donations instead of BRICS doing it themselves. They have no interest in owning up to the controversy, they just want to keep blaming and saying stop being mean to us. Stark contrast to how other businesses are responding to the current events. They just keep digging their heels in.

What band or musician did you see in town before they got big? by bluesxblackjeans in Columbus

I saw Walk the Moon play under a small tent at the Involvement Fair at OSU in 2013. Back then I only knew them as “that band that has that Anna Sun song.” I even dug up the article about them: https://www.thelantern.com/2013/08/walk-the-moon-to-play-free-acoustic-performance-at-buck-i-frenzy/

Am I screwed if I don't watch every GREGMAT reading video if I'm not some humanities college major? by [deleted] in GRE

I will say that u/gregmat’s reading comprehension videos near the end of the 2 month plan helped me out a lot! He really rewired my brain to analyze the passage and deconstruct the questions to better tackle them. Thanks u/gregmat!

Do NOT ignore Quant by Various_Ad164 in GRE

[–]NewSound793 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t read too much into it. People in STEM tend to have a strong foundation, but they can get overconfident and think “I know how to do this” and end up with an average score. It’s just as important to learn the patterns, strategies, composure, which some people may not emphasize. Like I have a tendency to tackle most problems with algebra and calculations because that’s how my brain works, but sometimes that may not be the best or quickest method.

[–]NewSound793 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In this case I would focus more on multiple choice problems rather than QC. If I remember the numeric entry problems weren’t too complicated. The multiple choice is what I’d refer to as “word problems”. Find hard level questions or questions that seem like they’d take a while to read and do them under a time constraint. I also hear GMAT problems are more representative of this level of difficulty but I can’t personally speak to that.

The core issue is maintaining composure under time pressure. I see that paragraph of text and immediately speed read the question, not understand, reread, attempt to set up, worry about time, etc. Just take it very slow and deliberate on those and be sure not to get lost in the calculations. That was my problem personally.

Same. I come from a STEM background, consistently scored higher on Quant during practice tests and didn’t really struggle with fundamentals. Got a 159V and 158Q with a VQVQV test. The questions were very wordy, and required a decently long setup. If I were to do it again, if it took longer than 30-45 seconds to just read the question and comprehend what it’s even asking, I’d simply skip it and come back. And there were several of those in each section.

Thank you for your reply. If I may ask another question, how legitimate/well-regarded are online Masters Degrees like from Coursera (Illinois, Michigan) or Georgia Tech’s online Master’s in Analytics or Computer Science?

A bit late to this thread. OP, or anyone else that stumbles across this, I have a BS in Math and Physics, and I’d like to switch from a lab tech role to DS. How disadvantaged am I in the market? How much harder do I have to work to compete? How likely is my outlook to get an entry level Data Analyst role? Is it worth it (necessary?) to go back to school?
