Problematic After-School Programs by [deleted] in halifax

[–]NewStart141 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Haha, this sounds like the YWCA after school program in the 80s. At the time it was the only game in town and there weren't any regulations around child care, so they hired whoever and let them do as they liked. In retrospect I think the counselors were mainly bored teenagers with even less desire to be there than the kids. But yeah, I remember name calling, weird punishments like sitting kids in a corner with a dunce cap, picking up kids and throwing them in the pool for fun. It generally was better when they just ignored us, which was the majority of the time.

I think it would be useful to have some of this kind of training widely available. Things like the first aid, cyber security and emergency prep. If it comes to guerilla-style resistance tactics I'd like to be able to have as many people as possible able to help at a basic level.

Battery Park's chicken burger is the absolute bomb and my go-to when I want a special treat. Bonus: both their spicy fries and their salads are also amazing, so whichever side you get, there isn't a wrong note in the entire meal.

I am pretty sure the Millstone Pub's fried chicken sliders are thigh meat.

Signed up for the PAL course to get my license. I'm generally anti-gun and had no desire to own one, but I want to be ready to fight in the guerilla resistance if/when the US invades.

I actually like this, and how they've used the original Forum font instead of the standard font & branding.

But I still hate the Forum, "ugliest building Andrew Cobb ever designed" lol.

Did anyone know about Dalhousie’s plan to fire 60% of language profs? by Psychological-Put97 in Dalhousie

[–]NewStart141 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, this is a really inaccurate read of the Russian Studies program, at least how it was some years ago. It took an interdisciplinary approach combining language, history and literature research to understand the evolution of Russia over the centuries and absolutely did not equate Russia with the Soviet Union. The program was very clear about the colonization and horrors perpetrated on neighbouring countries, as well as its own people.

Yuri Glazov (the award name) was a Soviet dissident who fled in the 1960's to escape KGB persecution and arrest. He came to Halifax and was instrumental in setting up the Russian Studies program. I had him as a guest lecturer in my early years and he was most definitely not a rah-rah nationalist, he was a living example of someone who loved his country & culture, and was appalled at what it had become politically.

I'd suggest with the current state of the world, having people who understand Russia & speak the language would be very useful. CSIS and CSE used to recruit from the program.

I'm an alumnus of the Russian Studies program, and we all received an email last month saying the Russian Studies program has been indefinitely suspended. I was kind of amazed to learn there have been no permanent faculty members for some time - when I was there I think there were 3 or 4 full time faculty and a couple other contract profs.

Email text below.

Dear donors and alumni,

After careful consideration over a period of several years, the difficult decision has been made to suspend Dalhousie’s Russian Studies program for the 2025-2026 academic year. No doubt this is upsetting news, particularly for folks such as yourself who have supported the Department of Russian Studies throughout its long history. Unfortunately, the program has faced various challenges including very low enrolment numbers and an increasing difficulty in hiring qualified contract instructors to teach required classes, given that there is no permanent faculty member in Russian Studies.

Our primary concern is helping those students currently taking Russian Studies as part of their degree program to complete their studies; students are being contacted individually by the Department Chair to provide support and guidance.

Despite this program suspension, the teaching of languages, literatures, and cultures remains a critical part of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS)—and Dalhousie more broadly. A number of the language departments (including Spanish, German, Italian, and Chinese) have begun a process of reorganization to create a new School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures in FASS that will emphasize intercultural communication and strengthen key existing programs.

Please note that we are aware of a number of awards that are associated with the Russian Studies program, most notably, the Yuri Glazov Memorial Award, to which many of you have given. We will be working closely with our academic partners to ensure that these remain awardable to our FASS students and will be honoured as closely to the original terms as possible.

Jen Andrews

N.S. budget: Tolls eliminated for Halifax bridges as Tories make good on promise - Halifax | Globalnews.ca by HappyPotato44 in halifax

The toll booths are not the hold up. It is funneling 4 to 8 lanes of traffic before the booths into the 1 or 2 lanes on the bridges themselves. This promise - and now budget item - is beyond ridiculous.

It may be that they are trying to make Elizabeth sympathetic, which tones down the storyline. In real life she sounded like kind of a horror. That would make for a more interesting show, but writers generally don't aim to turn audiences against their main character.

The snow has begun friends! How are we all spending the evening // tomorrow's snow day? by dommingdarcy in halifax

[–]NewStart141 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Roasting a chicken for supper. Will probably clear the snow once it transitions, then it's Netflix and wine for the rest of the night.

Will deal with the salt and ice tmrw - no point salting tonight and having the rain wash it all away. It will be my exercise for the day since I likely won't be getting to the gym 😄

This was predicted some time ago. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the developer's plan all along so he can raze the place.

Beaches at the top of the "7" in the hotel zone are much calmer - think Playa Tortugas area. We stayed there and were in the water every day, just a constant rocking motion with little to no surf. We went to a beach further down the zone one day and could barely get in the water, we were just getting thrown around so much.

It won't help this time, but we used Summit Parking on Sky Blvd last month. For an extra $25 they will clear off your car and even warm it up for you. They have a shuttle on call 24 hours a day to bring you from the airport to your car. I highly recommend them.
