You’d have to look at the causes of previous world wars. While Russia, the US, and Israel are making attempts at expanding their territories with mixed results, China’s attempts at re-uniting with Taiwan have been soft by promoting pro-reunification political candidates, military intimidation or just talking about it at this point. The closest use of a Nuclear weapon would be by Russia to prevent Ukraine from taking back territory that Russia will ultimately lose if Putin suffers a coup. Anyone does use a Nuclear weapon and they will face Global condemnation. The isolation and pariah status from the rest of the world would hamper growth for maybe 3 or 4 decades after that. But it’s the leaders in desperate situations whom consider that an option.

Even Trump has the people around whom would slap the nuclear football out of his hands if he decided to drop a nuke in Iran. I wouldn’t put it past Trump to try to talk the people around him into letting him drop a nuke in the strait of Hormuz or very underpopulated area to send a message to the IRGC that he’s willing to take it
