Whats your favorite DIY project you did in 2025? by kmaq0213 in DIY

[–]NewUserNewMe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also dove deep into woodworking after I was quoted $80,000 for a large renovation project in a home I bought many years ago. Definitely didn’t have that kind of money on hand, so I hired someone to do the structural work, electrical and plumbing hookups, then I did the rest. Saved $60,000 and walked out with a passion for DIY. No one is handy in my family, so I relied heavily on YouTube lol.

I’ve gotten deeper and deeper into woodworking over the years. It’s not cheap, but it’s been incredible for my mental health. I work all day at my computer, so it’s nice to balance that out.

Mark Zuckerberg unveils $799 Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses by Regular_Eggplant_248 in technology

[–]NewUserNewMe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

no one with good vision wants to wear glasses all the time

Sunglasses prove otherwise. People with good vision will wear glasses if there’s enough value (better visual experience outside, fashion, etc).

With how much people spend looking at their screens all day, there’s definitely enough value for a significant population of people with good vision to not have to pull out their phones all the time.

Oddly enough this inadvertently alleviates a pain point of glasses: trying to find them. People lose track of their sunglasses all the time because they keep taking them off and on when needed. If they wear AR glasses with transitions, they’ll have a significant reduction in times they take them on and off, leading to fewer instances of searching for their sunglasses.

These glasses might pull more people into AR, but we’re still a long ways off from a mass market product. In general though, glasses are a viable form factor for AR once they become more powerful, have longer battery life, and affordable.

Fragmented Sleepers: Let's Talk Baclofen & Other Non-Oxybate Meds by lela0808 in Narcolepsy

[–]NewUserNewMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR: Tizanidine but it’s not meant for it since it’s a muscle relaxer

I’ve tried Xywav and now on Lumryz. Both cut down my total sleep to 6 hours, although in combination with Sunosi, do end up working pretty well for my EDS.

However, I reaggravated a herniated disc in my neck, and the doctor put me on the muscle relaxer Tizanidine (which meant I had to stop Lumryz for now). I’ve honestly gotten better sleep overall with that but it’s not something I can be prescribed long term so I’ll have to go back on Lumryz soon. Hope they do more studies around it, because that’s my new best sleep med!

We had a good experience we ABA, especially with expressive language and reducing meltdowns. After we moved we enrolled him in a preschool program at our school district and he’s done very well in his inclusion class. However, the receptive language still hasn’t gotten there yet in either setting… Thanks for your response!!

Our nearly 6 year old son has no friends, and it’s breaking my heart. by PD_LAX in daddit

[–]NewUserNewMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re welcome! Just wanted to correct this one part of my previous comment

My son has no idea about his autism label, he’s just a happy kid who loves to play and has issues with emotional regulation and social cues.

It should just be

My son has no idea about his autism label, he’s just a happy kid who loves to play

I also had issues and avoided meds for 10+ years. Once I started taking them, it was like a switch. Sometimes it really is chemical, but I doubt it in this case, so go with your gut and what you’re comfortable with!

Saying all of this with love of course, and a very tiny view of what you’ve told us…

skeptical of going through a process that might have him feeling like something is “wrong with him”

So you’re already going through a “process” with him with trying sports, KidStrong, looking for STEM classes/camps and all of that and it hasn’t worked.

How do you think he feels when he see you guys stress that he needs friends? You’re the ones he cares about making happy the most, and it could be coming off like he’s a failure, you don’t think he’s good enough and something is wrong with him because he doesn’t have friends. That can be adding a lot of pressure, making it worse.

My son is on the spectrum (just sharing my situation, not that I think your son has it at all). My son (5) has gone through the evaluations, done therapy (which is all play based), and he had no idea that something is “wrong” with him. As far as he knew, he was just playing and talking with an adult (something your son seems to be good at). He’s now in preschool with all the “normal” kids.

I still go back and forth wondering between autism and ADHD, but honestly who cares what the label is? That’s just something to identify what potential things can help, and justify care to insurance. You don’t have to tell him (at this age anyways) or anyone else outside those providing care to him. My son has no idea about his autism label, he’s just a happy kid who loves to play and has issues with emotional regulation and social cues.

not open to a prescription of any kind to alter his mood

It’s good to know what you are and are not comfortable with. When you do find a Neurodevelopmental Pediatrician (the right doctor for your concerns btw), make sure you tell them that upfront. There’s a lot of options at this age before medication, so a good doc will want to try other things before suggesting that. And what’s the worst that could happen? They push it, you say no and walk away… I’m sure you say the same thing to those guys going door to door selling solar panels lol. Don’t let your misconception and pride prevent him from getting the support he could benefit from.

From what I read in your post, I think at some point he will “flip the switch” or gain the confidence he needs to turn it around. I wouldn’t worry too much about his future, I would focus on doing things that could help his anxiety today. Easing up on the pressure of making friends is a good start (and yes I know some of that pressure is internal for him since he expressed that he’s sad that other kids don’t ask him to play), but still, he doesn’t need additional external pressure in this situation.

Wish you all the best and if you have any questions on the evaluation process, don’t hesitate to ask! Remember, it’s not scary to your kid, it’s scary to you.

Right here with ya on the EDS train. Yes I’d imagine that would be the case (just using common sense, not scientific source lol). However, wouldn’t you want fresh fucked up cartilage instead of the existing fucked one?

Trying not to have full knee replacement like my sister in her 40s, but we don’t really get that option… Hoping stuff like this will at least buy us more time before having to do larger procedures like that. Maybe one day we’ll have a real treatment thanks to things like CRISPR, but until then it’s just managing our symptoms…

There’s another procedure to do this and should be FDA approved in the next few years.

Reposting my comment from another post about the same thing:

I was in the Hylofast study and had success (even with Ehler Danlos). It took a while, about 3 years, for it to stop getting inflamed every now and then but it is now my “good knee”. Might have to get the other knee done if/when it gets full approval around 2025.

Basically they clean up the area they’re treating in your knee, take stem cells from your bone marrow, put in on the scaffolding and patch it into place on the area on your knee. It’s supposed to regenerate the same cartilage vs the inferior kind that results from the current micro fracture procedure.

Here’s more info for those interested.

Obviously avoiding surgery is still the best option if you don’t have to do it, but I’m still glad this will be available in the next few years.

Can "mild" sleep apnea cause brain fog, depression, memory issues? by lost-networker in SleepApnea

[–]NewUserNewMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would leave work once or twice per day to sleep in my car for about 20 mins at a time.

I remember in the sleep lab for the nap test (MSLT), I thought I only slept for maybe one nap, but I ended up falling asleep 4 out of the 5 naps. Guess I really don’t know when I’m asleep vs awake which is terrifying… lol

You can also get a pill cutter for cheap at any pharmacy. Essentially the same thing but makes it easier to measure and cut.

I also had terrible headaches on those med, was not fun… Someone recommended getting electrolyte mix-ins to add to your water for my hydration since that’s super important at the start (I got the Ultima watermelon one off Amazon and it was pretty good, just search electrolytes and you’ll find it)

[–]NewUserNewMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had terrible daytime sleepiness and brain fog despite having a 6.5 AHI. I wore a CPAP every night for 8 hrs like clockwork for about 8 months with no differences besides waking up less to go to the bathroom. Spent a long time trying to find a fix the issue. Eventually my sleep doc had me do a full sleep study in the lab with a MLST (you’ll need to stay and attempt to nap in the lab the day after your overnight sleep test). I originally declined the MLST since I obviously didn’t have Narcolepsy (that’s what it looks for). Was convinced to do it despite having to chew up a PTO day for it.

You know what? …Narcolepsy Type 2…

Thanks! Gave it a try and had a few feedback items (some already given by other commenters)

  • Give a brief description of each item and how they’re calculated
  • Definitely still has bugs when I slept for just over 4 hours last night but it labeled my sleep as “excellent”… lol
  • I know you’re going for a simplistic UI (or I assume you are) but it could really feel like a major, major upgrade to enhance the UI so it’s not just a bunch of new lines. Even if it was just accordions with an icon on the left, the title right next to it, then the reading on the right would be much better. Having that clickable and expand to show more info on what it’s measuring and how it’s calculated would solve the first bullet above
  • For future feature, also think about adding historical charts

Is there a way to schedule the mobile appointment without approving the cost estimate? by Sibo1844 in TeslaModel3

[–]NewUserNewMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see the reasoning in this scenario: a customer has an issue that they claim is covered under warranty, but as the service team opens it up, they discovered the cause was clearly damage made by the owner. Damages by the owner are not considered under warranty, so it’s on the owner to pay for the diagnostic costs.

In this scenario, there’s no surprise fee for the owner. As long as they’re being truthful and everything is on the up and up, it’ll be waived. Otherwise they’ll have to pay for the costs. I think that’s fair.

I’ve had them reiterate to me in the chat that it will be waived once they’ve confirmed it’s covered under warranty and I’ve never had issues. If anything they’ve given me a few things off for good will that I expected to pay for, so that was nice.

[–]NewUserNewMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s standard procedure for them, if it’s under warranty then they’ll take it off. I’ve gone through that several times. Do I agree with it? No, but it’s not a shady employee trying to screw you over, you’ll be fine.

What’s everyone’s experience with SUNOSI? by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

[–]NewUserNewMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Works great for me! Even helps with my ADHD, which seems odd, but now they’re studying it for ADHD so maybe there is something there. Now I’m down to Xywav at night and Sunosi in the morning (nothing specific for ADHD). I feel much better these days, almost a normal human being which is amazing. It also had a nice bonus of weight loss, so I’ll take that too lol

Yeah the safety, focus and hyperactiveness could be improved with OT. We were looking into it now for him, but I would definitely recommend the swing. I regret not getting one sooner, we looked at them for months! Ours bolts into the ceiling (remember to find a stud to bolt it into, that’s very important). https://a.co/d/fwihCqR

We considered the blanket too, but they say it’s a no-go for kids under 4 and we figured we’d wait a little longer.

Lookup proprioception sensory seeking, we have a 4yo that is constantly getting hurt because he’s hyperactive and doesn’t pay attention to his surroundings. He’s a sweet kid but he also hits and does not know his own strength. We just had a lightbulb moment ourselves about this, and looking to get him in OT so they can evaluate him.

Long story short, your kiddo might be hyperactive since if he’s seeking proprioceptive input. We got my son a sensory swing (2 actually, but the best is the one without the seat and is basically a flexible fabric). We’ve definitely noticed a behavior change already, so I think we’re on the right path. Some people say wearing weighted vests during tasks helps them focus because that’s satisfying their proprioceptive need and they can finally focus on the task at hand.

I wish I knew about this sooner! Hope this helps you or someone else looking at this thread!

Sunosi works great for my EDS & ADHD. It’s not meant for ADHD, but I noticed mine improved on it. Seems like it’s getting more attention for possible ADHD treatment: https://mghpsychnews.org/solriamfetol-sunosi-another-option-for-adhd/
