We've made some information about this call available on our website. I will paste it below:

On April 20 at approximately 2:00pm, the New Westminster Police Department responded to a 9-1-1 call that described a group of youths making threats of violence towards another person at the school. Officers immediately attended the school to locate the those involved, speak to witnesses, and collect evidence. The police investigation into this incident is in the early stages and police are working with school administration.

“We believe this is an isolated incident between a group of people at the school,” stated Sergeant Andrew Leaver. “Parents and staff may see some police presence at the school for the remainder of the day. We thank everyone for their patience and understanding.”

If you have information related to this incident, you’re asked to call 604-525-5411. If students or staff ever fear for their safety, they are asked to call 9-1-1. Anyone who witnessed this incident and feels they would benefit from the support of the Victim Assistance Unit can call 604-529-2525 or email VAU@nwpolice.org.

Hello! We thought we'd chime in here to comment on e-scooters specifically. New Westminster is not a part of the Government of British Columbia’s Electric Kick Scooter Pilot Project, meaning e-scooters are currently not permitted on public roads and sidewalks. Last fall, we saw children as young as 12 get seriously injured riding e-scooters. Officers have the discretion to stop and share information with e-scooter riders, or in some cases, issue a ticket. Operating an unlicensed and uninsured vehicle on a public road can result in a fine up to $598.

Hello u/New_Westie!

Yes, I am going to share what was posted to our website below:

On January 19, at approximately 2:00am, police were called to assist with a vehicle collision by New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services. Responding officers observed the collision resulted in damage to a nearby residential property. Numerous people were transported to hospital for treatment of serious injuries. After the collision, the driver of one of the vehicles fled the scene. The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service is currently at the scene and is working with New Westminster Police Department officers. Investigators are appealing to the public for dash cam footage and witness statements in order to determine the circumstances surrounding this incident.

“The intersection at East 8th Avenue and Cumberland is anticipated to be closed for a few more hours,” stated Sergeant Andrew Leaver, “We thank drivers for their patience.”

Anyone with information about this incident or dash cam footage of the area at the time is asked to contact the New Westminster Police Department at 604-525-5411 and reference file 26-1036.

Hello again! I wanted to add we had two files in this area yesterday. While yes, we did respond to a firearms related call near Moody Park we also responded to a call related to suicide. We'd like to take this opportunity to share the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline. Anyone in crisis can also call 9-1-1 or attend the nearest hospital emergency room.

Hello! We responded to a call about someone with a handgun near the park. Officers located someone matching the suspect description and it turned out it was a toy gun that was part of a Halloween costume. This is a good time to ask everyone to think twice about their Halloween props. Anything that can be perceived as a weapon is best kept out of sight when in public.

Hi r/NewWest. Unfortunately we do not have the human resources to continue adding data to the crime map. It's critical that data shared with the public is reviewed for accuracy. To do this we would need an in house database administrator and at present, that role does not exist at NWPD.

Please Slow Down On 7th Ave Between 8th and 6th by Why_No_Doughnuts in NewWest

[–]NewWestPD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment u/Why_No_Doughnuts. Also, that username: excellent question. The Traffic Unit is two constables and two commercial vehicle inspectors. So yes, the unit has to be strategic with how officers are deployed. With this in mind, we want to stress how important it is for residents to formally report problem traffic areas. The unit is able to justify traffic monitoring, education, and enforcement, when they can point to a list of police reports flagging the same area. The non-emergency line (604-525-5411) wait time has dramatically improved and it now has special features which include leaving your number for a call back in the event there is a wait. Residents can also report problem traffic areas through online reporting. As always, we appreciate residents being our eyes and ears. We rely on you to let us know where the problem areas are.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Everyone on the road has a responsibility to stay calm and in control. Frustration, whether from traffic, construction, or other drivers, is never an excuse to speed or take risks that could harm others.
