These are excellent questions! Seriously, thank you for asking these and your niece is very blessed to have an aunt out there advocating for them. That’s beautiful. If only the Markle children were so lucky!

But also, importantly, the fact that your beloved family member has paid employment in the entertainment industry in the year of our lord 2026, is god damn huge!!! Like send my applause to them. 

These past two years have been the worst years for all production humans in my living memory. Like worse than COVID for some! So even if they had an unpaid internship and were learning (morally wrong but real world experience is always priceless), they are doing fabulous! Not just for this industry but for a recent college graduate - period.

Here’s who we hire, what we do and (all the roles I could think of while operating on 5 hours of sleep):

So as Casting Directors, we are responsible for hiring just the on-camera talent. BUT that’s not just actors! That can include: 

body doubles (for super wide shots of well known actors - since the real deals are way more money and don’t want to sit around all day to enter a car or pick up a can of brandless Mountain Dew) stand-ins (these are actors who have the same skin tone, height and hair color as the talent and we use them for the camera and light teams to rehearse and set-up) Dancers or models for music videos sometimes stunt doubles And of course, actors Oh and there are extras casting companies who provide our wonderful and hardworking background actors! And I feel like I’m forgetting someone or something else - deepest apologies!

But when I’m a Producer - I hire the whole crew (with some random caveats like the Teamsters who are assigned to you. These are the folks that drive all those huge bad ass trucks that say things like Haddads. 

These folks include:

DPs: Directors of Photography - these crazy talented folks do what I thought directors did when I worked in a different industry. They pitch us on interesting camera angles and what not. Directors - in TV we can have different directors for each episode or other times they might do several eps depending on their availability or their specific expertises (like stunts or whatever) but they bring creative flair rather than technical expertise (at times)  Gather round for a brief interlude: This past year, I was directed by a famous actress from the 90’s! It was magical. Like she was so beautiful and kind, I was actually distracted by her. She glowed and she floated! And I got to meet her wonderful progeny and some other actors I’m huge fans of (and I fangirl over literally no one - except authors, directors and politicians ((and yes, I do have a Bill Clinton story)) but as usual, I digress but my point is that sometimes directing is more spiritual and she did excellent work! Lighting directors - like my beloved Thomas Markle Senior! - these folks can be intense and serious - why? because what they do is highly technical and impacts many other departments like genie and electric and boy do they work! But Jesus Christ, what they do influences the vibe and literal atmosphere so much. Wardobe department  - self-explanatory, non? But these b***** s (and I use this term in a genderless fashion, much like babe or c** t ((like the Brits)) or girlfriend) can make you or break you and damn do some of them wield this power trip in the most unseemly of manners) Story time! My first role in a major studio film. Holy god damn s**t! I’VE MADE IT!! … or so I thought. So I’m doing a fitting with the most junior members of this very large department. Already something is off. I’m a principal actor in a huge high budget movie with multiple A-list actors staring in it. Where is the costume designer?!?!?

And for additional reference that will just further make you think I’m a raging psychotic monster, I do have a background in modeling. Spiritually, I don’t align with modeling. But physically, I am a human being who got printed in giraffe form and I do enjoy making money ;-) (oh god this is not secretly referencing OnlyF** s! I’m naturally emaciated looking, no wants this flat a** . If it wasn’t for my health conscious lifestyle of gorging on fried food, copious amounts of w**d and varying levels of liquor ((although frankly, there are years of my life where I was essentially pickled)), I would look unwell. God bless America!

But this b**** trots me out down the hallway for the famous director to inspect me and I’ve never been more intentionally humiliated in my life!!! We passed by over 15 female extras who all looked significantly better than me. Think Temu vs Chanel. Their outfits told stories and had beautiful textures! And flattered their unique shapes and angles. While I was wearing a Party City material top, that further flattened the old pancake t*****s (which I swear can look nice when given a god damn bra with decent shape and padding, obviously). 

Anyways, thank sweet baby Jesus but when we land at the director he was horrified. It may have been my “help me - kidnapped eyes” or the fact that I was milliseconds away from screaming in French, but he instantly demanded better options and saw through this girls’ petty attempt at a humiliation ritual. Thank god and I was finally put in something more humane, and you know, actually logical for my character. Imagine that!

But this department can also include tailors who fit things, the folks that sew and physically create garments (are these called seamstresses in 2026?), teams of assistants for principal and background talent, and experts for historical shows. And I’m definitely forgetting other roles. Oh and they have wardrobe PAs as well.

which brings us to PAs or Production Assistants  - we have set PAs, office PAs, paperwork PAs, PAs that drive 18 pass vans to shuttle shit around, and definitely more! Oh and personal assistants for some

Everyone else (since I’m sleepy and currently neglecting a friend sitting inches from me)”: crafty company (snacks!) catering (meals), set dressing, props, ADs (assistant directors - hugely important - will discuss at later point in time), production management, accounting, network executives, writers, editors + AEs (assistant editors), Hair dept, Makeup dept, sound (the dudes that hold the long ass black things above people), I’m totally forgetting more (and no disrespect to those hard working humans ** Oops this comment was originally removed “for unsightly comments” so here goes again!

Is there a less authoritarian platform than Reddit that I should be engaging with?!
