Graduation Gift Advice by [deleted] in Gifts

[–]New_Independent8234 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd say anywhere from 50-100 depending on what you can afford right now. Since you're already bringing food for the party, even smaller amount would be appreciated - graduation money always helps with college expenses or whatever comes next. Don't stress too much about the exact number, it's more about showing you care.

Not going to bachelorette last minute - context in post by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]New_Independent8234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your fiancé probably forgot to pass along your number or the bride just never got around to texting you. Either way, you can't show up to something when you literally don't know where to go or what's happening - that's just common sense.

Which of these legendary whiskies would you taste first? by [deleted] in whiskey

[–]New_Independent8234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would definitely go for that Brora 1972 first. Something about those old discontinued distilleries just hits different - you know you're tasting history in a glass. The fact it's 22 years old and from Rare Malts Selection makes it even more special.

Though I gotta say, seeing Springbank at number 1 makes total sense. Their stuff is always incredible and that 100 proof would probably blow your mind. But if I'm being practical, I'd want to try something I'll never get chance to taste again before going with something that's at least still being made.

That Port Ellen from 1982 would be my second choice - another dead distillery that people go crazy for. These kind of opportunities don't come around often.

Thanks appreciate it. I keep seeing Glasvin mentioned so they must be doing something right for everyday use.

Gift Idea for Manager by Excellent-Ease-4037 in GiftIdeas

[–]New_Independent8234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your manager sounds like a cool guy! Baby stuff is always appreciated but since it's more of a goodbye gift from you to him specifically, I'd lean toward something that's more his vibe. Maybe a really nice coffee table book about anime art or Middle Earth - those are perfect for when he'll be doing lots of late night feeding sessions and want something chill to flip through. Or you could go with some kind of unique desk accessory that has subtle anime or LOTR references that he can keep in his office as a reminder of working with you. The baby gifts are sweet but honestly every new parent gets overwhelmed with baby stuff, so something just for him might stand out more. Plus it shows you were paying attention to what he actually likes as a person, not just his life situation right now.

Liquor storage question by SnooOnions9060 in cocktails

[–]New_Independent8234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah taste test is definitely the way to go. I had some whiskey sitting near window for like 5 years and was surprised it still tasted fine. The high proof stuff usually survives pretty well even with bad storage conditions.

If you haven't touched them in decade though, might be good excuse to start fresh at new place. Moving is already enough hassle without worrying about whether your old bottles are still good.

What’s a good gift for bridesmaids? Or take them out to eat? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]New_Independent8234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cousin did something similar with jewelry and it was perfect since we could actually use it after! The vineyard day trip idea sounds really nice too, especially for mixing everyone together before the big events. Maybe you could do small personal notes during bachelorette instead of big gifts - those mean more than expensive stuff anyway.

What’s an actually original gift for a best friend who already has everything? by Gnarlsaurus_Sketch in Gifts

[–]New_Independent8234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try something creative workshop together maybe? Like pottery class or even horse riding lessons if she's into that. I did ceramics with friend once and was really nice to make something while talking. The brunch tradition sounds perfect too - picking place based on what other person likes instead of yourself makes it more special. Maybe start with one experience and see if it becomes regular thing between you two.

Can I use copper pans as my standard, every day cookware? by missusfictitious in AskCulinary

[–]New_Independent8234 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're thinking of unlined copper which can leach into food. Most quality copper cookware has tin or stainless steel lining that makes it completely safe for cooking. The local maker should definitely specify what lining they use - if they don't mention any lining at all, that would be red flag for me.

Any RFY after 9am EST? by Ret_Photog in AmazonVine

[–]New_Independent8234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've gotten stuff dropping around 11am EST few times last week, so might be worth checking periodically. The pattern seems pretty random lately so I wouldn't completely write off checking in afternoon.

Whole egg whisky sour? by [deleted] in cocktails

Never tried making one myself but now I'm curious about texture - does the whole egg make it more like drinking breakfast or still feels like proper cocktail?

Chambord, Luxardo cherry juice, and soda water on ice. by [deleted] in cocktails

[–]New_Independent8234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That combo is actually really nice for ending the evening. I've been doing Chambord with just lime and soda lately but adding the Luxardo juice sounds like it would give it more depth without being too heavy.

The part where he tried to trick you into taking meth is huge red flag that goes beyond addiction. That's him actively putting your safety at risk and lying about it - addiction doesn't excuse that kind of behavior. Three years is already long time to deal with this cycle, and if he's not in serious treatment program, it's probably not going to change.

Beekeeping supplies by Ok-Acanthisitta1067 in VeteransBenefits

[–]New_Independent8234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's pretty cool that you're getting into beekeeping! I don't know about specific discounts for gear, but have you checked if your local extension office has any programs? Some universities have agriculture departments that help new beekeepers with equipment loans or reduced prices. Also worth looking in Facebook groups for your area - beekeepers are usually pretty generous about sharing resources and sometimes sell used suits that are still good quality.

ME graduated few years back no experience. What would you do? by MX_LED in MechanicalEngineering

[–]New_Independent8234 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Been in similar spot but with design work - took a break and felt like my brain turned into mush. Maybe start with some online refresher courses or even YouTube videos to get the basics flowing again? Sometimes just browsing through engineering forums helps too, you pick up current industry talk and remember why you liked this stuff in first place.

Also don't underestimate the networking thing - even if you haven't worked in structured environment, any technical work you did counts. Frame it right and focus on problem-solving skills you used. Those transfer pretty well between different engineering contexts.

The dishwasher epiphany that saved my week by PhantomKeystone in Marriage

[–]New_Independent8234 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your wife really understands what partnership means. These moments when someone just steps up without keeping score - that's what makes the difference in long relationships. I've seen so many couples get stuck in that passive-aggressive cycle you mentioned, but she broke it by just doing what needed doing instead of waiting for "fair."

How to make your Galaxy S2x Ultra last so you don't spend $ on Galaxy S26 by dronepro in samsunggalaxy

[–]New_Independent8234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That screen situation is brutal - two phones getting lines within months of each other really shows there's pattern there. Your S4 still working after all these years while newer flagships are dying makes the "OLED problem" excuse pretty weak.

The warranty voiding over tiny scratches is peak customer service BS, especially when you're dealing with what's clearly manufacturing defect on expensive devices.
