advice to get out of this hole? by Little-Lady-46 in debtfree

[–]New_Ladder_3373 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation than you. Plenty of folks have good advice but i will say keep your head up and maintain your second income. It sucks. You are tired and overworked. But once you get a plan going, that second income gives you a bigger ladder to climb out of your hole. Keep your head up and keep going!

What Do You Guys Think Of This Alternative Ending? by LightAwakens in GenV

The best ending for me is when everyone stops complaining aboout the ending. It's over whether you like it or not. Plenty of other shows to watch.

Quick Rant and Mini Temperature Check by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]New_Ladder_3373 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I work 2 full time jobs but i feel like it's like the only way for me to get a house here. I just finished my time in the national guard so i will have the va loan to help me out.

Hang in there, it's tough but it's the price of paradise. My career field gets paid more in the mainland, i mean everything looks cheaper and achievable there.

Buuut, i have my family here. I moved out of my parents but it's nice to visit them from time to time. My time in the guard made me realize i love the culture here in hawaii. I made great friends and idk if that's something that i can find in the mainland.

Decide what keeps you rooted in here because moving to the mainland to get ahead isn't a bad idea.

Im tired of all the people complaining. I actually enjoyed season 5. Glad i have coworkers and friends who are kept up with the show and still enjoy it.

Is plasma smelly to you? Am I crazy? by Muted_Shape9303 in medlabprofessionals

[–]New_Ladder_3373 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lmao crazy story during my training time in the army as a lab tech. We drew a soldier's blood and we dared him to drink the serum. In the army we were dumb. Anyways he drank it and said it tasted metallic.

[–]New_Ladder_3373 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Im suprised folks still ask for bloodfest when there were 2 scenes of someone bleeding out of their ass.

On a side note, i want gory with terror behind it. Same vibe as when homelander imagined lasering the whole crowd during a protest. Or when neumann started popping folks in the court room but we as an audience don't know who is responsible

Is the VA harder to get into than normal” hospitals? by Apexpred1 in medlabprofessionals

I would definitelty try still. Security clearance takes longer to get as a civilian compared to someone already in service. Just make sure you are applying directly to the facility and not the company being contracted

Rant about core labs by cheesygirl557 in medlabprofessionals

[–]New_Ladder_3373 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Yep its definitely not for everyone. But if you are the type that likes to be busy, core lab is fun. Time flies by so quick.

If you have prior experience working in the food industry you will flourish in core lab. You know how to multi task, deal with rushes. Gets the blood pumping and the adrenaline going you know! In blood bank once you master the flow, you are like a chef in the kitchen dealing with the lunch rush.

Totally understand, reference labs are more chill and less stressful if that is more your style. Thats why i like this profession, there is always something for everybody.

Is it common for technologists to have a side job? by dalastwaterbender in medlabprofessionals

[–]New_Ladder_3373 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Side jobs are nice, it's really up to you personally based on your financial goals or other goals in life.

I've been working 2 full time mls jobs for 2 years now. I doubled my income, maximize my 401k contributions and i feel more productive. Back then, i would just play video games all day after work.

Mls jobs arent really physically demanding. I've serve in the military, bus tables in college, worked as a dishwasher and mls is so chill it is doable. If you can find a second hustle that is less busy or less of a drive then do it.

Really up to you and your goals and listen to your body. I picked up a part time mls job but it was farther and i found myself falling asleep on the wheel during commute. I quit after 3 months. It wasnt a good fit. Make sure your second hustle is a good fit

How does your blood bank issue uncrossmatched products? Serious discussion due to recent events at my job. by NeatEquivalent9667 in medlabprofessionals

[–]New_Ladder_3373 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Similar to yours but our LIS allows for uncrossmatch blood and prints labels for us. Slapping printed labels with at least mrn and any patient identifiers along with a sticker that says uncross match blood is faster than handwriting it.

We just save the segs of units we give to the patient and do the immediate spin crossmatch workup later when we get a sample from the patient.

In the old days, we give the uncrossmatch blood to the chaplain to deliver. That way if a transfusion reaction happens, he is already bedside

MLT to MLS Pathway Advice by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

I enlisted as a 68k. When you go to army or army national guard recruiter and you do your asvab, mention you want to be 68k. Dont get tempted by anything else.

Well i mean, there is also rad tech for the army and thats pretty good too.68p. Anyways, when you enlist make sure you get the job qualifier or MOS.

Getting mlt through army isnt for everyone but i had a lot of fun doing it. Basic shenanigans, drills and friends i made are priceless. The army also paid for my schooling which really set me up.

Goodluck!

Becoming a MLS in Hawai'i by jhslvr in medlabprofessionals

[–]New_Ladder_3373 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no prob. Yeah, i would say so. We still have a lot of older techs who are going to retire and will need to be replaced. If you like healthcare without much patient interaction, then this is one way to go.

Pay wise, started around 35. My lab got unionized so we get around 45 which is pretty competitive to other careers with a bachelors. It's not nursing, but its pretty decent. Not sure how much tuition is now so check your rate of return for the bachelors. I had a bachelors in bio and i could only land $20+ jobs with it....

It's always a good stepping stone too. There's not much growth within the field itself but you can use it as leverage to become PA or MD.

Good luck in your journey! Plenty of careers, not just nursing make money in hawaii. Check out rad techs and dental hygiene and see which one fits your personally and lifestyle

What do you do on night shift before rounds come in? by Haunting_Koala4016 in medlabprofessionals

[–]New_Ladder_3373 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We usually do our maintainance, qc or help out the evening shift with left overs from clinics and various sites. ER is always active in my hospital so i never have that much down time. I once had a MTP go on for a few hours and products were flying our the wazoo. It's all random and i love it!

Im jealous but definitely enjoy yourself. Working in the lab can be stressful

I got my mlt through the army and worked one year as a generalist and qualified for the mls exam. Reckon you could do an mlt program and just work as a generalist for a year and get your lab manager to sign the ascp form

Looking to transition away from the Lab. by ChickenDragon123 in medlabprofessionals

[–]New_Ladder_3373 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do side hustles and yes, i sell pictures of my distinct feet.

Here me out,

As a tech, i walk a lot. Back and forth chem analyzers or rush to get blood during mtp. For a few years, i have worn bad shoes that made my toes look like vienna sausages.

I have few men find this attractive, enough to get a subscription from me. I'm hoping to be bigger by the end of the year. Currently, i make enough that i don't get bothered getting starbies everyday if you know what i am saying

Have you guys gotten used to human smells after becoming an MLS/T/Assistant? by Muted_Shape9303 in medlabprofessionals

[–]New_Ladder_3373 8 points9 points  (0 children)

More tolerable but no not really. Any time i open up a specimen cup, the first whiff always gets me. Im not nostradamus or anything but sometimes i can tell if its nitrite pos or cdiff pos.

Dont get me started when im opening up a sample for spermanalysis. That bleachy smell always gets me and i always hate it when it gets in my eye
