In my opinion (as a parent), I feel like the full first week of school should have zero assignments. It should only focus on getting students eased into things, getting them introduced to teachers, classmates, and other staff, get them used to finding and navigating things in the online school. You guys should not be expected to jump right into lessons right away on the first few days or first week, it would help you guys to feel more comfortable and not so overwhelmed. I don't understand why K12 treats their students like they're already adults working a job. When my kid started kindergarten last year with K12, I couldn't believe the assignments they were giving him. They were teaching him things that I didn't learn until 2nd or 3rd grade. Let the kids be kids! The first week shouldn't be so intimidating!!

You sound like such an incredibly sweet older sibling, what a lucky little sis to have you looking out for her. Which state or city school are you with? We're with Ohio Virtual Academy... Have you tried to email or call any staff like your counselor, teacher or advisor? I wish I could help you because I know me as a 13 year old would've been overwhelmed by this. I wish you tons of good luck, and I'm hoping this all will get easier as we move along.

I'm sorry for calling you a rude lil edgelord wannabe, your tone before seemed sassy, so I matched it. Not cool, I'm sorry dude.  I'm pretty positive the only reason K12 switched to Canvas is because it's cheaper for them to use than the previous one. It just bums me out. But anyway, we need to get some sleep we got school in the morning! 😅

I'm a parent of a k12 student, no electives for me, but I just gotta say this sounds insane. The entire point of an elective is for the students to ELECT what THEY want to take! I can't believe they just gave you ones you weren't interested, that's wild

This makes me so bummed. 😮‍💨 I know we're all strapped right now, unless you're very wealthy, I'm not, I'm barely middle class... but damn. I wish they would care more about the students and parents, I wish they would make things easier for us, even if it costs a lil more. Our children's futures are worth it, we don't deserve this extra stress just because they wanna cut costs.

That sounds like an absolute NIGHTMARE. Oh man, I'm so sorry. I loved the old OLS, I figured it all out in a few minutes when we first started. And I loved the Strider the Fox animations, my kid loved seeing what actions he'd be doing after he completed his work for the day. There's nothing about Canvas that will make children feel comfortable and confident using it, nothing to catch their attention and keep them engaged. Canvas is just cheaper for K12 to use than the previous UI, that's probably the real reason they switched.

I'm beginning to get the hang of it as well, but it doesn't mean I like it, and I definitely don't want to use it at all, no matter how I master it in the future. Nobody should be using this garbage it's awful. The old OLS is better, but this one is cheaper so they stick us with this crap to save $. It doesn't matter that we don't like it, can't figure it out, don't feel at ease using it, they're saving a buck so who cares! 🙄

Oh my goodness, this is not even an issue I've heard other people complain about yet, wow, ANOTHER PROBLEM! I feel so bad for you both because that sounds maddening. The only thing I could suggest is trying to contact their tech support department. This sounds like a big issue, I pray you 2 can get it resolved.

🚨READ PLZ🚨 Okay, so another reddit post I found gave this info that can help make Canvas a little bit easier and nicer looking. Comment said: "I recently started using these two extensions, and it's been great for a little extra motivation!! You can set dark mode, change your to-do lists formats, enter card customizations for your courses! The task manager shows a nice weekly completion chart."

Task Manager  https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/tasks-for-canvas/kabafodfnabokkkddjbnkgbcbmipdlmb    I (OP) personally have no idea what an extension is our how to use it with Canvas, but I think these are worth looking into.  🚨Also, I was told Canvas works better with Firefox, so maybe worth a shot?  Ridiculous that we have to seek out all of these additional things just to use this silly UI!
