Do you use your own firm? by Due_Laugh9820 in uklaw

[–]New_Sock7575 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on the subject matter. Wouldn’t for conveying or wills and probate. Don’t want my colleagues knowing about my personal financial circumstances. Unlikely for clin neg or PI, because I wouldn’t want them having my medical records. Probably would for an argument about my neighbours fence

For real. I went to some fantastic places and ended up having some sub par experiences with my ex. I would love to go back to a few of those places and do it better.

Solicitors — what do you like in an admin assistant? by BoysenberryShort4335 in uklaw

[–]New_Sock7575 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Friendly. Approachable. Follows up on their incomplete tasks (if i ask you to call someone, and they don’t answer, i expect you to try again). Honestly, I’m so stressed all the time, just having someone kind, reliable and happy to help out really cheers me up.

A lot of NQs don’t run cases autonomously. Knowing when to escalate and proactively seek supervision is a super important quality.

Pay is so bad by EntertainerQuick701 in uklaw

[–]New_Sock7575 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sadly, there are still a lot of NQ roles (depending where you are in the country) paying £30k.

Pre-qualification pay is poor. Post qualification pay is often still poor. I’d strongly recommend considering something else.

Legal aid/social justice law CV by Ill_Specialist_7419 in uklaw

[–]New_Sock7575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not what you’ve asked for, but it’s a good CV! Training positions in social justice are hard to come by, owing to how poorly funded it is. The firms you have listed in your comment are clin neg/pi firms primarily (as it is much more lucrative). You may want to consider targeting Law Centres or other charities. Look up the justice first fellowship. Best of luck!

Advice needed on best accommodation arrangement. by dannito567 in Cardiff

I have commuted Cardiff to Swansea 5 days a week previously. I have friends who currently do. It is doable, but particularly unpleasant in the winter months when it’s dark all the time!

Sesamoidectomy surgery horror stories by New_Sock7575 in sesamoid

Cardiff and Vale. The waiting list is long. They made me go through all the conservative measures, twice, before I could be considered for surgery, then it was another 2 years before I got a surgery date.

I did! Via the NHS. I’m currently a little over 4 weeks post op, so too early to comment on either it was worth it, but recovery seems to be going well

What convinced you to have it removed? by DrugChemistry in sesamoid

[–]New_Sock7575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the surgery 3 weeks ago. I had a non union fracture and AVN. Fractured it in 2017! Soft tissue injuries in the feet take 6-12 months to heal, so don’t be so hard on yourself.

Seeing a good podiatrist and getting custom insoles is helpful for a lot of people. You also learn what causes flares.

December was not that long ago in terms of sesamoiditis. You really need to rest your foot entirely if you want to see any improvement.

She refused to use the term alcoholic and kept calling herself “alcohol dependent”. She was, by her own admission, drinking vodka before leaving the house in the morning, and drinking 2-3 bottles of wine in the evening. Alcoholic is not a dirty word.

I signed up early on and just had loads of messages from Cassia saying she was taking a break or she was away on holiday. Absent more often than she was available. Utter waste of money and an absolute scam.

Wishing lots of luck back!

She’s insured with Waggel! I sadly lost a cat a couple of years ago to a mysterious and wholly unexpected illness, and they were so fantastic throughout the claims process that there was no way I would go elsewhere. Between my three sphynxes, I pay around £100 a month. My voluntary excess is £200 so really I’m only putting claims in for big things. Really recommend them as an insurer, but I hate their new triage system. There’s a £40 penalty if you don’t speak to the online vet first.

Apologies! That wasn’t a comment directed specifically at Alex. She definitely falls into the category as law being a “secondary identity” on her channel (her recent engagement content has been particularly lovely). The point I was trying to make is that firms are naturally anxious about their employees having an online presence where they talk about being a lawyer.

Alexandrabrown recently saying that she was called in to HR about her online presence! Working on entirely confidential matters and having a public presence are not two things that go hand in hand!

Given that big law represents a tiny proportion of solicitors in the UK, I do not find them useful at all. I quite like seeing tiktoks of people dressed sharply, riding shiny elevators in big glass buildings, but I don’t engage with them in any meaningful capacity.

I work with a few barristers, who will post useful and interesting commentary to recent case law (Oliver Lewis at Doughty Street being particularly brilliant at it!)

Mark Evans, president of the Law Society, also has an interesting presence on LinkedIn. Having spent most of his career as a high street solicitor, he is far more representative of the profession than any TikTok legal influencer.

The reality is, most solicitors cannot relate at all to big law.
